PIPES
End Preparations
4.2.1 Materials (pipes and fittings) specified with “BW” or “BE” in Purchaser’s Description
shall have beveled ends in accordance with ASME B16.25 Fig.2 (a) and.3 (a). Plain
ends (square cut) are acceptable for the pipes of which wall thickness is 3 mm or
less, as an alternative.
4.2.2 Materials (pipes) specified with “PE” in Purchaser’s Description shall have plain ends
(square cut).
4.2.3 Materials (pipes, fittings, and flanges) specified with “SW” in Purchaser’s Description
shall have socket welding ends in accordance with ASME B16.11.
4.2.4 Materials (pipes, fittings, and flanges) specified with “NPT” in Purchaser’s Description
shall have National Pipe Taper (NPT) ends in accordance with ASME B1.20.1. Pipes
and nipples shall have male-threaded ends. Fittings and flanges shall have female
threaded ends, unless “M-NPT” that requires male-threaded end is specified in
Purchaser’s Description.
x plus/minus “0.6 x (Nominal wall thickness) mm” or “10 mm”, whichever is lesser.
Pipe length
4.5.1 Pipes shall be supplied in the following unit length.
x NPS 1-1/2 and smaller pipes (non-galvanized) : 5.0 m to 5.8 m
x NPS 2 and larger pipes (non-galvanized) : 10.5 m to 11.5 m
x Galvanized pipes (all sizes) : 5.0 m to 5.8 m
4.5.2 Welded pipes shall have longitudinal weld. Spiral weld pipes are not acceptable.
4.5.3 Large size pipes with two longitudinal seam welds are subject to Contractor’s
approval, provided all relevant inspection and testing are performed. The vendor
shall clearly specify in their bid document when they wish to supply pipes with two
seam welds.
Pipeline Pipes, Fittings and Flanges (ASME B31.8)
4.13.1 Specific design and dimensional requirements for pipeline pipes (API-5L Grade
X65) shall be in accordance with most stringent requirements mentioned among
MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290105 and this specification.
4.13.2 Specific design and dimensional requirements for pipeline fittings (ASTM A860
Grade WPHY-65) and flanges (ASTM A694 Grade F-65) shall be in accordance
with most stringent requirements mentioned among MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290111,
Applicable ASTM, API & MSS standards and this specification.
Hardened Washers”. The surface finish roughness average (Ra) shall be 3.2
micron (125 micrometers) or smoother on both sides.
x Washers fabricated from AISI 4140 material are acceptable.
x When coated bolts are required, the washers shall be coated with the same
coating.
Gaskets
4.15.1 Gasket Compression
Spiral wound gaskets shall have been tested and conform to the requirements of
gasket compression in accordance with ASME B16.20 Paragraph 3.2.6. If not,
Vendor shall notify Purchaser and qualify the gaskets, accordingly.
5. MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Chemical Restrictions
Pipes, fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds shall satisfy the following chemical
restrictions.
x Carbon steels
¾ C Max. 0.23% (Pipes, Seamless and Welded wrought fittings)
¾ C equiv. Max. 0.43%
(C equiv. = C + (Mn/6) + [(Cr + Mo + V)/5] + [(Cu + Ni)/15])
¾ Si Min. 0.15% to Max. 0.25% (When “Galvanized” is specified in
Purchaser’s Description) (Note-1)
Note-1: Galvanizing for 3” and above Pipes, Fittings and Flanges
shall be done by Purchaser (Except for Blind Flanges, Spectacle
Blinds, Paddle Blanks & Spacers and Swaged Nipples. These
components shall be supplied as “Galvanized” by vendor).
x For chemical restrictions of API 5L Grade B pipes, most stringent requirements
between Paragraph 5.1.1 and API 5L Table 5 – Chemical Composition for PSL 2
pipe with t < 25.0mm shall be followed.
x 22Cr duplex stainless steels such as UNS S31803 shall have a minimum of 0.14%
nitrogen (N).
x The PRE number and other requirements for 22 Cr duplex stainless steel
components shall be as mentioned in MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290102.
x Carbon steels shall have a maximum of 1% nickel (Ni).
x Cu-Ni (UNS C70600) pipes, fittings and flanges shall conform to following chemical
restrictions:
¾ Zn Max 0.5%
¾ Pb Max 0.05%
¾ P Max 0.02%
¾ S Max 0.02%
¾ C Max 0.05%
5.4.2 The carbon steel flanged made from ASTM A105 shall comply with following
requirements:
x All flanges made from ASTM A105 shall be supplied in normalized heat
treated condition (ASTM A105N). CL150 and CL300 flanges shall be
supplied with supplementary requirement S2 “Heat Treatment”.
Supplementary requirement S2 is not mandatory for Class 600 and higher
since these flanges are required to be normalized.
x Tension test specimen shall be taken from a production forging from the
same or heavier cross section, for each heat, and each heat-treatment lot.
Forgings qualified with test specimens taken from a test blank or bar are not
acceptable. For flat forgings, the sample location shall be taken from center
of the forging. For cylindrical forgings, the sample shall be ½ T x T.
x Grain size shall be measured per ASTM E112. Samples for grain size
estimation shall be taken from tension test specimen location. Grain size
shall be No. 6 or finer.
x When "Impact Tested" is specified in purchase description for carbon steel
ASTM A105 flanges, the flanges shall be impact tested as per the
requirements for ASTM A350 flanges mentioned in para. 7.3.4.
5.4.3 All ASTM A420 Grade WPL6 fittings shall be supplied in normalized heat treated
condition.
5.4.4 All welds in API 5L SAW pipes with “Normalized” in purchase description shall
receive normalizing heat treatment, with minimum temperature of 870 deg C, so that
no untampered martensite remains.
5.4.5 API 5L PSL2 Grade X65 SAW line pipes with wall thickness > 32mm shall be supplied
in quenched and tempered condition.
5.4.6 Starting plates for ASTM A671 welded pipes with class 12 or 22 shall be normalized
heat treated.
5.4.7 Austenitic stainless steels (pipes, fittings, flanges, spectacle blinds, and bolts & nuts)
shall be supplied in solution heat treated condition with the following additional
requirements.
(1) The final solution heat treatment followed by quenching shall be carried out as
separate heat treatment process from hot working. Direct quenching just after hot
working is not permitted.
(2) In addition, the following austenitic stainless steels shall be solution heat treated
at a minimum of 1038 deg. C.
5.4.9 Duplex Stainless Steels (pipes, fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds)
(1) Duplex stainless steel components shall be supplied in annealing heat treated and
water quenched condition.
Duplex stainless steels shall be adequately located in heat treatment furnace so
that they are sufficiently heated. Vendor shall submit their location map in heat
treatment furnace for Purchaser’s approval before order placement. Purchaser
reserve the right to designate the locations without cost addition, unless Vendor’s
location map is approved by Purchaser before order placement.
Quenching time (duration from furnace to quenching pool) shall not exceed 60
seconds.
Quenching time, water temperatures before and after quenching shall be
measured and recorded in every heat treatment.
If duplex stainless steels need to receive 2nd solution heat treatment, the
hardness testing, impact testing, and ferrite measuring in accordance with
Paragraph 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4.1 shall be re-performed.
The test specimens for these re-testing and re-measuring shall be prepared in
accordance with Paragraph 7 and shall have same heat number and same heat
treatment history as the represented duplex stainless steels. Duplex stainless
steels that require 3rd solution heat treatment shall be rejected.
(2) In addition to above requirements, the heat treatment requirements mentioned in
MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290102 shall also be followed. In case, if there is any
conflict between the requirements among this specification, MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-
290102 and applicable ASTM standards, the most stringent requirements shall be
followed.
(3) ASTM A182 Grade F51 forgings shall be supplied with supplementary
requirement S2.
5.4.10 The mechanical properties of the following material shall be maintained (i.e., those
specified in the ASTM specifications) after 2 times postweld heat treatments per
ASME B31.3 Paragraph 331 at construction site. Vendor shall inform Purchaser
of maximum postweld heat treatment temperature at construction site for
mechanical property guarantee, if required.
x Carbon steel seamless pipes, seamless fittings, and flanges which are
furnished in quenched and tempered condition and require postweld heat
treatment at construction site.
5.4.11 When ASTM B150 C63000 bolts and nuts are specified in purchase description,
the materials shall be supplied with temper heat treated condition “HR50” for
standard strength as defined in ASTM specification.
Hardness Restrictions
Pipes, fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds shall satisfy the following hardness
restrictions.
5.5.1 Duplex stainless steels shall have hardness maximum 310 HV10 (base metal, HAZ,
and weld metal).
5.5.2 Ring Joint Groove (*) on flanges and spectacle blinds
¾ Carbon steels Min. 150 HB
¾ Austenitic stainless steels Min. 160 HB
(*) Hardness measurement at flange facing beside groove is acceptable.
Asbestos
No asbestos containing products shall be used anywhere.
Galvanizing
5.10.1 Pipes specified with “Galvanized” in Purchaser’s Description shall be galvanized in
accordance with ASTM A53 using high grade zinc per ASTM B6.
5.10.2 Materials (fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds) specified with “Galvanized” in
Purchaser’s Description shall be galvanized in accordance with appropriate
galvanizing standard ASTM A153, A123, or A53.
Electric Resistance Welded Pipes (ERW Pipes)
ERW pipes are not allowed to be used.
Inspection Documents
Inspection documents shall include chemical analysis results, mechanical test results,
heat treatment method, heat treatment temperature, heat treatment holding time, and
cooling method after heat treatment, as a minimum. BS EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection
certificates shall be supplied to pipes, fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds (incl. paddle
blanks and spacers).
Gaskets
5.15.1 Spiral-wound Gaskets
x Flexible graphite for spiral wound gaskets shall have a minimum purity of
98%. Leachable chlorides from the finished gasket shall not exceed 50 ppm.
x Spiral-wound gaskets shall be suitable for the following fluid services:
Hardness Restrictions
5.17.2 Rubber flat gaskets shall have 50-70 Shore-A Durometer hardness for all rubbers.
The test results shall be recorded and reported in Manufacturing Data Record
(MDR).
6. WELDING REQUIREMENTS
General Welding Restrictions
6.1.1 The welding requirements (except for duplex stainless steels and pipelines) shall
be in accordance with the most stringent criteria specified in the document MZLN-
JJ-XSPDS-00-0004, MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290302 and this specification. In case
of conflict, the vendor shall inform the Purchaser in writing for resolution of the
conflict.
6.1.2 The welding requirements in pipeline (pipes, fittings and flanges) shall be in
accordance with the most stringent criteria specified in the document MZLN-JJ-
XSPDS-00-0004, MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290304 and this specification. In case of
conflict, the vendor shall inform the Purchaser in writing for resolution of the conflict.
6.1.3 The welding requirements in duplex stainless steels (pipes, fittings and flanges)
shall be in accordance with the most stringent criteria specified in the document
MZLN-JJ-XSPDS-00-0004, MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290321 and this specification. In
case of conflict, the vendor shall inform the Purchaser in writing for resolution of the
conflict.
6.2.3 Welding consumables used for FCAW on austenitic stainless steels shall have Bi
content maximum 0.002%.
6.2.4 Welding consumables used for FCAW on carbon steels shall be H4 or H5 grade
(Hydrogen content 5 ccH2/100g or less), where joint thickness exceeds 50 mm or
the minimum tensile strength of base metal is 550 MPa (80 ksi) or higher.
6.2.5 Welding consumables used for FCAW on carbon steels to which both impact testing
and postweld heat treatment (e.g., normalized, stress relief) are applicable, shall
have the welding consumable supplier’s guarantee for impact properties after the
required postweld heat treatment at Vendor’s factory.
6.2.6 FCAW is prohibited for other materials than carbon steels and austenitic stainless
steels.
6.3.2 All API 5L Grade B PSL2 SAW pipes shall be supplied in “Normalized” condition
(Supply condition Grade BN).
6.3.3 The ASTM A671 Gr. CC60 pipes and ASTM A420 Gr. WPL6-W with “PWHT” (this
requirement is specified for amine service) in purchase description shall be post
weld heat treated as per document MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-180401.
6.3.4 The mechanical properties of the following materials specified in the relevant ASTM
/ API specifications shall be maintained after the postweld heat treatment (at
manufacturers) plus 2 times postweld heat treatments per ASME B31.3 Paragraph
331 at construction site. Vendor shall inform Purchaser of maximum postweld heat
treatment temperature at construction site for mechanical strength guarantee, if
required.
x Carbon steel welded pipes and fittings which are made of TMCP plates and
applicable to Paragraph 6.3.1 and/or 6.3.2,
x Carbon steel welded pipes and fittings which are made of quenched & tempered
plates and/ or which are furnished in quenched & tempered condition, and are
applicable to Paragraph 6.3.1 and/or 6.3.2.
x ASTM A671/ A672 Class 22 pipes which are made of TMCP plates and are
specified with “PWHT” in Purchaser’s Description.
6.4.2 Weld metal of austenitic stainless steel pipes and fittings used shall confirm to the
impact testing requirements in ASME B31.3 Paragraph 323. The testing
temperature shall be -196 deg. C.
6.4.3 Welding procedure qualifications of duplex stainless steels shall follow most
stringent impact testing criteria among ASTM A923 Method B and MZLN-EL-
XSPDS-00-290321. Testing shall be performed for the base metal, heat affected
zone (HAZ), and weld metals.
6.4.4 Welding procedure qualifications of duplex stainless steels shall have ferrite
content measurements by microstructure examination (manual point count) as per
most stringent criteria specified among ASTM E562 and MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-
290321. The examination results shall be recorded by taking photographs and
attached to the PQR. Measurement locations shall be:
x Weld at near external surface, Center, and near Internal surface
x HAZ at near external surface, Center, and near Internal surface
x Base meal at near external surface, Center, and near Internal surface
6.4.5 Welding consumable brand name shall be added to essential valuables in ASME
BPV Code Sec. IX for duplex stainless steels.
7.1.2 In addition to Paragraph 7.1.1, test specimens of duplex stainless steels (hardness
testing as per Paragraph 7.2, impact testing as per Paragraph 7.3.5, and ferrite
content measurement as per Paragraph 7.4.1 shall be prepared from a lot as
follows. Refer to Paragraph 7.1.3 for definition of a lot.
x Pipes :The test specimens shall be cut from finished pipes.
x Wrought fittings :The test specimens shall be cut from sacrificial fittings,
over-length of fittings, or same wall thickness test plates
welded as a prolongation of the fittings for welded fitting.

x Forged flanges :The test specimens shall be cut from sacrificial forging,
or integral prolongation of the flanges. (Note-1)
x Forged fittings :The test specimens shall be cut from sacrificial forging.
(Note-1)
Note-1: The fittings/flanges/forgings from which test specimens are prepared shall
be heat treated together with represented materials before machining and
be located at the center of furnace when heat treated.
x purchase order,

x shape (Note-1 and Note-2)
x nominal wall thickness (for pipes and wrought fittings) (Note-1),
x rating (for forgings) (Note-2),

Note-1: Several sizes, shapes, and nominal wall thicknesses may be consolidated in
one lot, subject to Purchaser’s approval. In this case, pipe or fitting that has the
heaviest wall thickness shall be taken for test specimen preparation for the lot.
Note-2: Several sizes, shapes, and rating may be consolidated in one lot, subject to
Purchaser’s approval. In this case, forging that has the heaviest weight shall
be taken for test specimen preparation for the lot.
Hardness Testing
The following materials shall have hardness testing by Vickers method using test
specimens. The test shall be performed on base metal, HAZ and weld metal. For base
metal only, testing method by Brinell or Rockwell is also acceptable.
x ASTM A671 Grade CC60 Class 22 EFW pipe and ASTM A420 Grade WPL6-W
fittings with “PWHT” in purchase description shall be hardness tested after
performing post weld heat treatment by Vicker’s method in accordance with
supplementary requirement S3 with acceptance criteria as Hv < 248.
(1) The test frequency, except for duplex stainless steels, shall be same as the
frequency of the tensile testing, as a minimum. The test frequency of duplex
stainless steels shall be one test per a lot defined in Paragraph 7.1.3, as a
minimum.
(2) The series of hardness readings shall extend from unaffected base material on
one side, across the weld to unaffected base metal on the other side. Three
traverses shall be made: one as close as practical to the outer surface, one as
close as practical to inner surface, and one across the center. The distance
between measurements across the weld shall be adequately configured. The
test results shall be recorded and reported in Manufacturing Data Reports (MDR).
Impact Testing
7.3.1 When “Impact tested” is specified in purchase description for API 5L PSL2 Grade
B pipes, the pipes shall be impact tested -29 deg C with acceptance criteria as per
API 5L specification.
7.3.2 When “Impact tested” is specified in purchase description for ASTM A671 pipes,
the pipes shall be impact tested as per supplementary requirement S2 in
accordance with ASTM A671 at -46 deg C.
7.3.3 When “Impact tested” is specified in purchase description for ASTM A516 plate
materials, the material shall be impact tested as per supplementary requirement S5
in accordance with ASTM A516 at -46 deg C.
7.3.4 All ASTM A350 flanges shall be supplied with Supplementary Requirement S5
where charpy impact test shall be taken from finished flange in the same or larger
size, same heat and same heat-treatment lot. Any variation in either heat lot or
heat-treatment lot requires separate testing. Flanges with impact test specimen
taken from prolongation of actual flange are also acceptable. Flanges qualified with
test specimens taken from a test blank or bar are not acceptable.
(1) Duplex Stainless Steel (pipes, fittings, flanges, and spectacle blinds) shall be
impact tested in accordance with ASTM A923 Method B. The test shall be
performed on base metal, HAZ, and weld metal. The test frequency shall one test
per a lot defined in Paragraph 7.1.3, as a minimum. The test results shall be
recorded and reported in the Manufacturers Data Records (MDR).
(2) In addition to above, the duplex stainless steels shall also be subjected to Charpy
V-notch toughness testing, in accordance with MZLN-EL-XSPDS-00-290102.
7.3.6 ASTM A320 Grade L7 bolts and ASTM A194 Grade 7L nuts shall have been impact
tested at -101 deg C.
7.3.7 Low temperature carbon steel pipes (ASTM A333) and fittings (ASTM A420) shall
conform to the impact properties as specified in respective ASTM standards.
Non-Destructive Examinations
7.5.1 Ultrasonic examination in lieu of radiographic examination is not acceptable.
7.5.2 Entire outside length and accessible inside length of longitudinal welding seam of
the following materials shall be liquid penetrant examined in accordance with ASME
BPV Code Sec.V Article 6. No evident imperfection shall be permitted. The results
shall be recorded and reported in Manufacturers Data Records (MDR).
x Duplex stainless steel pipes and fittings
x Austenitic stainless steel fittings made for cryogenic service
7.5.3 The duplex stainless steel fittings supplied as per ASTM A815 standard shall be
supplied with supplementary requirements S2 and S7.
7.5.4 Following welded pipes shall be supplied with 100% radiographic examination
(Joint Efficiency Factor = 1.0):
x API 5L PSL2 Grade B EFW
x API 5l PSL2 Grade X65 EFW
x ASTM A671 Grade CC60
x ASTM A358 Grade TP304/ 304L Class 1 Dual Grade
x ASTM A358 Grade TP316/ 316L Class 1 Dual Grade
x ASTM A790 UNS S31803
Pressure Testing
Quality of water for hydrostatic testing of austenitic stainless steels shall contain less
than 50 ppm of chlorides.
7.8.3 If any of the additionally inspected elbows have unacceptable wall thickness, then,
all the elbows in the lot shall be inspected.
8. MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION
Identifications
Materials shall have identifications in accordance with the applicable codes & standards,
and the project specification, MZLN-JJ-LSPDS-00-0004.
9.1.2 Austenitic stainless steels shall not come into contact with lead, cadmium, zinc,
aluminum, copper, tin nor other low-melting metals that cause cracking.
9.1.3 Stainless steels shall be pickled before packing. Surface finishing of stainless steel
fittings by grinding is prohibited after pickling and/or passivation.
Rust Prevention
9.2.1 Materials shall be properly packed and rust prevented in accordance with project
specification, MZLN-EL-BSPDS-00-120103. The details of packing and rust
preventions are subject to approval by Purchaser. Plugs shall also be rust
prevented.
9.2.2 Rust preventions on gasket contact surfaces of materials shall be easily removable
using common solvent such as thinner or acetone at construction site.
Reusable end caps for loose pipes shall be either of the recessed-type cap to
enable the use of soft faced hooks during lifting, or a common-type cap but with
slings attached on both sides
Bolt and nut material designations, bolt size, and bolt length shall be marked on
each package. One package shall have only one bolt and nut material designations,
bolt size, and bolt length.
Gasket material designations, nominal pipe size (NPS) and Purchaser’s Project
Symbol shall be marked on each package, as a minimum.
