Engineering Mathematics 1B - MATE1B1

Assessment: Test 1

Total Marks: 30

Duration: 90 minutes

Date: 30 August 2021

Assessor : Dr P. Dlamini

Instructions :

• Answer all questions.

• Show every detail of your working. Failure to do so will result in significant loss of
marks. Note that you will be awarded zero if you only give the final answer.

7. The volume of water in a dam is determined by the formula V = 2πh(3d − 3h). In a 2

hour period of rain, water is flowing into the dam resulting in an increase in the height (h)
from 5m to 5.5m while the diameter (d) increases from 25m to 26.5m. Using differentiation,
determine the average rate of change of the volume in the same period. [5]
