Financial Status are the profits, losses, revenue, income, earnings,

indebtedness, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation (EBITDA) or

cash flow. However, it seems that the financial status of a student is

affecting their academic performance. This study aims to identify how

financial status affects the academic performance of Grade 10 students of

Bagong Silangan High School. Using stratified random sampling, this

study consisted of 482 students who respond to the given questionnaire

of the researchers. Google-forms and printed copies were used to collect

and gather the data.

Results showed that majority of the students came from a lower income

families that they received a 20-50 daily allowance which is not enough

for everyday use even so students still manage to have a high average

during their first quarter performance. This shows that financial status

doesn't hinder their academic performances in school.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This study was designed to let the researchers know how financial

status affects academic performance of the students enrolled in Bagong

Silangan High School. Emphasis was put on trying to establish the

relationship between profile of the respondents, parents' financial status,

school background and academic performance of BSHS. The study

employed the use of correlation design to establish the nature of the

relationships. Financial factors influence academic performance

significantly. Financial problems are a serious issue that leads to stress

and pressure on their performance in school. As a result, the researchers

carried out a study to address this because they lead to multiple stages of

problems such as health issues, and academic performance.

Demonstrating how Grade 10 students' academic performance is affected

and how to address this. The validity and reliability of research

instruments was established, and data was collected from the

respondents selected from Grade 10 all sections using Google-forms and

hard copy. To analyze the data, researchers study how financial problems

affect students. This formed the basis of the detailed analysis, conclusions

and recommendations.

figure, the independent variable is the factors of financial status that

affects the academic performance of the respondents in terms of family’s

monthly income, student’s daily allowance, supports from different people

or sector

which can affect the students' academic performance. The dependent

variable of the study, on the other hand, was the academic performance

of Grade 10 students at Bagong Silangan High School. Another variable is

the recommendation for the students to reduce the amount of money that

they spend on their daily lives. One of the objectives of this study is to

describe and determine the financial status and its effects to the

2
academic performance of grade 10 students at Bagong Silangan High

School.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effect of financial status to the

academic performance of grade 10 students at Bagong Silangan High

School. Furthermore, this research aims to find the problem and possible

solutions. Specifically, the study sought an answer to the following

questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of;

affect the academic performance of grade 10 students at Bagong Silangan

High School. The study covered the respondent’s demographic profile,

which was broken down by gender, grade, sections and age. Through g-

form and hard copy of survey, the researchers will collect data from BSHS

respondents.

The study was limited to only grade 10 students since the study will

be handled by a grade 10 student itself. The inflation, other grade level,

2nd grading, 3rd grading and the final average of the respondents are not

covered by this study.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents different literature and studies, foreign and

local, which are relevant to this study. This literature and studies were

gathered by the researcher from different books, articles, and journals.

Related Literature

Local Literature

Locally, the results of the Cebu study demonstrate how poverty has

a big impact on the resources available to students. Many students

struggle to achieve the same academic levels as students who do not live-

in poverty because of this lack of resources. The source of income, and

the mother’s education level are factors that affect student

accomplishment (Guirit, Dumaran, Zamora, and Heramil 2015).

According to the study of (Razafimahasolo et al. (2016). The

researcher calculated the effect of financial literacy on stress levels and

363 college students' academic achievement of a private university in the

Philippines. The writer the respondents had a moderately high level of

financial literacy, a low level of stress, and satisfactory academic

achievement, according to the findings. Furthermore, college students

7
with a high level of financial literacy may have a low level of stress and

excellent academic performance.

Furthermore, based on Dela, T. B. (2016) study about Financing

Education through the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, this was

conducted to evaluate the effects of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino

Program (4Ps) on the academic performance of the students who are

enrolled at Calaba National High School, Calaba, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija,

for the School Year 2017-2018 and are currently receiving education cash

grant under 4Ps program.

Foreign Literature

Dang and Bulus (2015) note that because education is a high-

cost social service, students who receive insufficient financial support will

find it difficult to improve their academic performance. This research

seeks to determine the connection between students at Malaysia's public

universities' financial difficulties and academic achievement.

Definitely, those students' financial struggles as a result of

coming from underprivileged families have a negative effect on their

academic achievement. Therefore, they require strong support systems to

assist them in adapting to the demands of higher education. The study's

findings reveal that because of financial issues, students often struggle to

meet the high standards of their coursework as well as to pay fees and

access basic necessities. (Mofoka, Khabane Grace, (2016).

8
In addition, the socioeconomic factors that affect an individual's or a

group's standard of living are often measured by that person's education,

employment position, and parental income. The present study looks at

how socioeconomic factors affect pupils in higher secondary schools'

academic performance. According to the results of the current study,

mothers' occupations and educational backgrounds have a significant

impact on the academic achievement of their children. (K. Udayakumar,

S. Rajendran, and A. Sugirtha Rani (2022).

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the research design, sampling procedure,

instrument and technique used, data gathering procedure, and treatment

of data.

Research Design

This study utilized quantitative non-experimental descriptive

research design which was intended to describe a population, situation, or

phenomenon accurately and systematically by observing and measuring

the variables (McCombes, 2020). In its effects on the academic

performance of Grade 10 Students.

Sampling Procedure

The respondent of the study will be the selected Grade 10 students

of Bagong Silangan High School enrolled for the academic year 2022-

2023.

The student- Respondents were selected using stratified random

sampling technique was utilized to ensure that the sample was done

based on the entire population of Grade 10 students in the school. There

were 34 sections in the Grade 10 level, and each section had 30 minimum

10
students and 55 maximum students. The researchers selected 24 sections

and the sections were considered as strata because they were different in

terms of class schedules, teachers, and students. The entire set of cases

from which the researcher sample is drawn in called the population.

Since, the researchers neither have time nor the resources to analysis the

entire population so they apply sampling technique to reduce the number

of cases. The sample size was calculated based on the population of 1,080

Grade 10 students. This resulted in a sample size of 482 respondents. The

selected students were then informed about the study and asked for their

time and participation.

Instrument and Technique Used

In gathering the data, the researchers made a questionnaire and

google-form. Researchers printed out the hard copies of questionnaire.

Researchers’ requests permission from students to fill the hard copies of

survey forms. All they have to do is to check the circle next to the

options. Ms. Jennifer Camba, English 10 teacher, was also asked to sign a

permission letter stating that the researcher may conduct a survey.

Researchers personally distributed questionnaire to those students

who are willing to participate in the study. The data that the researcher

gather will be kept confidential and will only use for the sake of the study.

The researchers also created a google-form. Researchers chose to use

google-form due to having asynchronous classes on March 6-8, 2023. The

respondents from the first six section can type, click and choose from the

11
following choices. The researchers share the link to the following grade 10

sections through personal message.

The researchers also continued to conduct their face-to-face survey

by personally distributing hard copies of questionnaire last March 9, 2023.

By the help of the respective teachers of each section, the researchers

gathered a lot of respondents from the Grade 10 students.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the validation of the instrument, the researchers obtained an

approved letter from the subject's teacher to conduct the study. The

researcher also obtained written consent from the respondents ahead of

the distribution of the instrument. The questionnaire was created using

Google-forms and paper surveys, and respondents were given the link to

the online survey questionnaire and paper survey questionnaires in

person by the researcher. After then, the responses were retrieved. The

obtained data was organized, tallied, and be subjected to statistical

analysis.

Treatment of Data

The gathered data was collated, and correspondingly summarized

by the researchers. The data, gathered from the questionnaire was

subjected by statistical treatment in order to determine and ensure the

reliability of the results.

12
The following is the statistical procedure used to interpret the data

gathered from the respondents of the study.

1. Simple percentage. The demographic profile variables of the

respondents were analyzed using the simple percentage with the

following formula:

P = F/N (100)

Where:

P=percentage

F=frequency

N=total of respondents

100=constant multiplier

Table 1 showed the demographic profile of the students. Based on

the table, 49% respondents were male while the remaining 51% were

female, for a total of 482 respondents.

In terms of section, Benevolence came in first with 9.5% of the

total number of responders, followed by Loyalty with 7.9% while

Sympathy got 7.10% of the total population of respondents, Empathy

with 7.7%, and Integrity received 6.4% of the total population of

respondents. Love with 6% respondents tallied with Perseverance with

the same total number of respondents. Discipline with 5.8% respondents,

same with Patience with the equal number of respondents. It is then

followed by Generosity with 5.6% respondents ranked tenth in the total of

the respondents. Next is Harmony with 5.4% respondents, Honesty with

5.2% respondents and Obedience with 5.1% respondents. Justice who

ranked fourteenth in the entire population of respondents with 3.5%

respondents, next is the Diligence with 3.3% and Courtesy with 1.8%

respondents. Credibility with 1.7% tallied with Dependability with the

equal number of respondents. As for the Compassion and Courage, they

have the identical number of respondents which is 1.4%. For the

Truthfulness with 0.6% respondents ranked twenty first in the entire

number of respondents. After that, Kindness and Piety also have the

same total number of respondents with 0.4%. Lastly, with only 0.2% of

responders, Faithfulness ranked lowest among Grade 10 Sections.

16
Regardless of age, respondents in the age of 16 took up 46.7% of

the total. Followed by 15 with 38.6% respondents, 17 with 10.6%

respondents, 18 with 2.9% respondents. Finally, age 19 came in last

place in terms of age with 0.6%

students have the average of 86-88; followed by 23.9% of students that

17
have 83-85 average for the first quarter; while 17.6% students have the

weighted average of 80-82 for the first quarter.

Meanwhile 13.9% of the students have the weighted average of 89-

91; it was then followed by the 7.7% of students whose average are 92-

95; then 7.3% of the students have the average of 78-79.

On the other hand, 2.7% of the students have the average of 75-

77; and 0.2% of the students have the weighted average of 96-99.

This finding is in disagreement with (Savuth, 2022) Financial

problems are a serious issue that need to be addressed as it leads to

multiple problems such as health issues and academic performance. Since

the findings showed that despite not having financial stability, students

could still maintain a very satisfactory grade.

Based on the survey results, approximately 35% of students come

from households with working parents (mother and father), while the

remaining 65% are from households with either one working parent or a

sibling.

19
According to to the result of survey, over 34.6% of students come

from households where the father provides the majority of the family's

financial support, compared to roughly 12% of students from households

where the mother is the only breadwinner.

Furthermore, less than 5% of the students come from households

where a brother, a sister, or a combination of the three is the main

provider of income. Nearly 1.2% of students come from homes where all

three people (the mother, father, and a brother or sister) work.

The remaining 3% of students come from households where non-

family members or other family members act as the major source of

support financially.

Based on the study, a significant number of students come from

households with employed parents, often with the father being the

primary source of income. While others may have varied support systems

where non-family members or other family members are the primary

financial providers.

According to Kerris Cooper and Kitty Stewart, (2021) there is

abundant evidence that children in low-income households do less well

than their peers on a range of developmental outcomes. Stating that

children from low-income families have an increased risk of negative

outcomes such as lower educational achievement, as well for children

with both working parents are likely to have financial stress, parental

20
fatigue, and limited parental time and attention which have a negative

factor on children's academical performance.

Based on the survey data, 44.6% of the students come from

families with a monthly income of 5,000 pesos to 10,000 pesos, while

another 23% come from families with a monthly income of 10,000 pesos

to 15,000 pesos.

Additionally, 15.6% of the students come from families with a

monthly income of 15,000 pesos to 20,000 pesos and 8.9% come from

families with a monthly income of 25,000 pesos to 30,000 pesos.

The remaining 7.9% of the students come from families with a

monthly income of more than 30,000 pesos.

This suggest that the majority of the students come from families

that are able to provide for their basic needs, while some come from

21
families with a higher level of disposable income which could afford them

better educational opportunities.

The result agreed with (Abdu-Raheem,2015) parents’ daily income

is having a high and positive correlation regarding the students’ academic

performance. Stating that a student's family income has a significant

impact on their academic performance in school.

Based on the survey, most of the student’s allowance is 20-50

Pesos which is equivalent to 35% while the other 33% is the students

with a 50-70 pesos allowance.

Meanwhile, there are 68 students that have 70-100 Pesos that is

14.1% there are also 37 students that the allowance is 100-120 which is
22
7.7%

Furthermore, 1.9% of the students which is equal to 9 have an

allowance that is about 120-150 Pesos. While the remaining 8.3% were

the 40 students with an allowance of 150 pesos and above.

This table shows the respondents different amount of allowance and

most of the respondents only have 20-50 pesos which are not enough for

their daily expenses.

The result was in consonance with (Gasiorowska, A., 2015) financial

satisfaction of each student is influenced by the household income of the

parents. Stating that financial satisfaction or the student’s satisfaction

into their allowance are influenced by the household income of the

parents.

Figure 1. Students Financial Assistance

23
Figure 1 shows that 20% of the respondents indicated that they

were members of the "4Ps" and received financial support from other

people or sectors; 0.4% students answered the "Angping Foundation,"

another 0.4% answered by a grade 10 student that they are supported by

Unbound; 0.2% answered that they're supported by the "Paafi

Foundation," and 79% indicated that they don't receive any financial

assistance. Because of this, most of our respondents said they don't

receive financial support from other people or organizations. In a nutshell,

it tells us that many students do not have support from other people or

any organization because their family or parents can really give them the

support they need in school and other things.

According to these results, the majority of students came from

wealthier households that were able to provide for their children on their

own, while some students may have low-income levels and hence require

financial assistance from other individuals or sectors.

79% of the respondents doesn't have financial assistance because

application for loans and financial assistance are hard and have a very

long process. Keith Peters (2019) Student loans in different forms from

various government branches have been around for a long time.

The table shows the student's first grading average and their daily

allowances. The grades cover a wide range, from an average of 75-77 to

an average of 96-99. There are 8 students with an average score of 75-

77, and they receive daily allowances of 20-50. The same allowance

range is applicable for the group of students with an average score of 78-

79, which comprises 18 students.

25
The table also reveals that 37 students received daily allowances

ranging from 20-50 had a general average score of 80-82. Similar to this,

39 students with general average of 83-85 are also given daily allowances

of 20-50.

There are 47 students with a daily allowance of 50–70 had an

average of 86-88. Another 23 students had an average range from 89-91

that also receives a 50-70 daily allowance. There are only 12 students

with an average score of 92 to 95 that is given a daily allowance of 50-70.

One student with a daily allowance of at least 150 will be the final student

with an average score of 96 to 99.

In general, the data suggests that students with better academic

performance tend to receive higher daily allowances. This indicates that

having financial support may improve academic achievement.

In line with this study, socioeconomic status affects academic

performance of students significantly, because their socioeconomic status

should not hinder students from achieving what they want to achieve

(Sollano, Duhaylongsod, Aviso & Moneva, 2018). Stating that the parents

giving an allowance to their children has a impact to their grades in

school, if they received low allowance it might result to achieve the

average level of grades.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusion and recommendations based

on the study and its findings. This study was summarized so that readers

and future researchers can be able to understand the financial status and

its effect on the academic performance of selected Grade 10 students at

Bagong Silangan High School.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study aimed to determine the effects of financial status on

academic performance of selected grade 10 students at Bagong Silangan

High School.

The study recognizes the challenges faced by students from low-

income families, particularly when it comes to financial difficulties. The

gathered data shows the majority of most respondents are ranging to the

age of 15 to 16.

The study used stratified random sampling to select the student

respondents from 28 sections. The respondents' profile was recorded,

consisting of age, grade, section, and gender. The respondents were

given access to the online survey and also received paper surveys in

person from the researcher. After the data was collected, it was analyzed

using a simple percentage formula.

27
Based on the study's findings, the majority of students come from

families that are able to meet their basic needs. However, some students

come from families with higher incomes, enabling better educational

opportunities, while others have lower incomes, potentially requiring

financial assistance such as 4ps and others. Most students received an

allowance but it was not sufficient to cover school expenses. The study

also revealed that some students come from households where non-

family members or other family members are the major financial

supporters.

The study has the potential to benefit students, teachers, parents,

the Department of Education, and also for the future researchers as the

data and results can help them enhance the validity of related studies. It

is recommended that students and their families should seek out financial

assistance that could help them financially, furthermore, students should

strive to develop healthy financial habits, such as budgeting and saving

money and avoid overspending on unnecessary items.

28
CONCLUSIONS

In order to better understand the findings of the study, the

following conclusions are drawn:

1. The majority of the students come from families that are able to meet

their basic needs. However, some students come from families with

higher incomes, enabling better educational opportunities, while others

have lower incomes, potentially requiring financial assistance such as 4ps

and others.

2. There are still some programs like 4p's, Angping and Paafi Foundation,

who help the parents of the 79% students who don’t have financial

support to support them financially.

3. Most students received an allowance but it was not sufficient to cover

school expenses. The study also revealed that some students come from

households where non-family members or other family members are the

major financial supporters.

4. The findings shows that 44.6% majority of the Grade 10 students in

Bagong Silangan High School belongs to less fortunate family that have a

5,000-10,000 lowest income. Gender and section do not have something

to do in gauging financial status and its effects on their academic

29
performances.

5. According to the findings, Financial Status affects students average

with their daily allowance and even students with a low income can

maintain a passing grade.

RECOMMENDATION

With regard on the result of the conclusion, the following

recommendations are given:

Students- Establish an intervention program that targets the most

vulnerable students and provides them with the necessary resources and

support to overcome financial obstacles and encourage students to

participate in IPON challenge, a financial education program that helps

students learn about budgeting, saving, and earning money

Parents- Parents should support their children academically and

financially, and create a positive home environment that encourages

learning. They should also encourage their children to participate in

extracurricular activities that can help them develop valuable skills.

Teachers- Teachers should incorporate financial education into

their instruction and provide students with resources on personal finance,

30
including budgeting, saving, and investing. This can help students develop

positive financial habits and better manage their finances.

School- This serve as a secondary home for children, need to

consistently consider the individual circumstances of each student. It is

important for them to collaborate and discuss effective strategies to assist

all students, particularly those facing financial difficulties. Additionally,

schools should offer financial management lectures to help students

improve their budgeting skills and foster savings habits.

DepEd- As the primary governing body in schools, DepEd has the

responsibility to create more opportunities for students, such as

comprehensive scholarships and financial assistance. For instance, DepEd

should strive to expand access to high-quality education without

burdening students with additional costs or fees. This ensures that

students can receive a good education without facing financial barriers

imposed by the school.

Future Researcher- Future researchers should be diligent in

addressing all the concerns raised in this study and filling the existing

gaps in knowledge. It is crucial for them to thoroughly cover all the

aspects and issues highlighted in this research.
