Instructional Objectives:

● By the end of class, students will develop respect for the instruments and for each
other
● By the end of class, students will demonstrate a daily routine for the start of each
class, through repetition and practice.

General Objectives
● Teach basic open tone drumming
● Teach 2-beat\at echo pattern
● Teach Question and answer drumming

Materials:

● Drums
● Roster
● Group # cards

Opening/Introduction Activity
Greeting (Key Word-Respect)
● T: warmly welcome S into the class and direct them to risers.
○ S: Sit where they want for now.
● T: “Good morning 4th grade! Before we get into what we are doing today, I want to
hear from you!”
○ Question: What is something fun you did over the weekend?
● S: By showing respect, listen to one another as they share.

Learning Opportunities/Procedure:

Introduction to Unit
● T: “As you see around the room, we are going to get the chance to play drums as an
ensemble and soloisticly!”
● T: “More specifically, we will be focusing on drumming from Africa and Latin
America.”

Assigning Drums
● T: Acknowledge that there are a various different types of drums
○ “You get what you get and dont complain” “Beggers cant be choosers”
1. Call S names
2. Assign group number
3. After groups assigned call one from a group to grab drum
4. Find a spot on the risers
5. Sit quietly for next instruction

Practice
● Students will practice coming into the room, grabbing their designated drum and
heading to their spot on the risers.

Drumming Etiquette/Technique
● T: explain how to respect each other and the drum
○ Ask S how to treat the drums
● T: Write ways we can respect the drum and each other on the board next to the key
word
● T: Question: How should we play the drum respectfully?
● T: Model and explain the hand position when playing the drum (Hot stove)
○ Flat palm to finger tip in center of drum
■ Low tone
○ Tips of fingers on edge of drum
■ High tone

Echo 1 (Pattern 1 on Low/Pattern 2 on High)


● S: choose a partner to play the drum first
○ Other S(s) play in thighs
● T: Play echo pattern (RL R) WITH COUNT OFF
○ Repetition
○ Teach S to play at the righ time
● S: SWITCH
● T: Repeat with other S
● S: SWITCH
● T: Teach second pattern (RL RL)

Question and Answer


● Voice Only: Teacher/individual student
○ T: Ask each S to decide ahead of time what they would say to the question,
“Whats for dinner” Demonstrate some options verbally
○ Go around the class asking the question and motioning to S you want to
answer. Stress the importance of answering in the 2-beat space.
○ Option: Substitute the words, “What's your name?”
● Voice and drum at same time
○ S partners must decide who goes first on each drum
○ Repeat the exercise asking S to answer with voices and rums simultaneously

Closing Activity

● T: Dismiss S by groups to put away drums and line up


○ 5-10 mins
● Option- Goodbye drum off
