WHAT IS TRANSPORTAION AS A SYSTEM?
INTERACTION OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND

AS A SYST EM

• A transportation system can be defined as the

combination of elements and their interactions,
which produce the demand for travel within a given
area and the supply of transportation services to
satisfy this demand.
INTERACT ION OF
SUPPLY AND
DEMAND
T RANSPORT • The capacity of transportation infrastructures and modes, generally over a geographically defined

SUPPLY
transport system and for a specific period of time. Supply is expressed in terms of infrastructures
(capacity), services (frequency), and networks (coverage).
T RANSPORT
• Transport needs, even if those needs are satisfied, fully, partially, or not at all. Transport demand can
thus be realized, where it has been measured under existing conditions, or potential, where it could

DEMAND
happen under hypothetical conditions. Similar to transport supply, it is expressed in terms of the
number of people, volume, or tons per unit of time and distance.
• Transport companies offer transport services to users who require such services, often on open
T HIRD-PARTY markets. Transport users pay for the services delivered according to the agreed contract terms or the
T RANSPORTAT ION current (spot) rate.
• The transport user deploys his own transport means to move freight or travel ( e.g. motorists using
OWN ACCOUNT private cars or large industrial companies owning a fleet of trucks or rail wagons). The transport
user has direct access to a known capacity at the risk of a lower level of asset utilization ( e.g.
T RANSPORTAT ION empty movements or idle equipment).

THE T RANSPORTAT ION
SYSTEM
ENVIRONMENTAL
Climate also conditions transportation construction and operations.
ECONOMY
Economic development and global trade have been significant vectors for the growth of mobility.
DEMOGRAPHY AND SOCIETY.
Population growth in urban areas will lead to greater pressure on public transport infrastructure.
HISTORICAL
The local transportation system is deeply rooted and influenced by cultural characteristics.
POLIT ICS
Transportation is a national aspect that is monitored and regulated by those in the authority
TECHNOLOGY
Technological innovation is very difficult to anticipate, and its impacts are even more complex to assess. For transportation ,
technological innovations either concern the management, the mode (or infrastructure), or the motion (engine).
TECHNOLOGY
Improved command of flows and supply chain management of mobility
TECHNOLOGY
Contributes to trade facilitation through more efficient customs procedures as cargo information is standardized and exchange able
TECHNOLOGY
Improvements in materials and engines in terms of performance
TECHNOLOGY
Logistics operations
