Ch11 – AC Power Analysis

Learning Objectives

1. Understand instantaneous and average power

2. Understand the basics of maximum average power
3. Understand effective or rms values and how to calculate them and to
understand their importance
4. Understand the complex power and power factor
5. Understand the power factor correction and the importance of its use

RMS (Effective) Value

The idea of effective value arises from the need to measure the effectiveness
of a voltage or current source in delivering power to a resistive load

The effective value of a periodic current is the DC current that delivers the
same average power to a resistor as the periodic current

EE202-S24_w04_2

RMS (Effective) Value

Our objective is to find Ieff that will transfer

the same power to resistor R as the sinusoid i

Average power absorbed by the resistor in

the AC circuit

Power absorbed the resistor in the DC circuit

a) AC circuit b) DC circuit

RMS (Effective) Value

Solving for Ieff

Effective value of a periodic signal is often

known as the root-mean-square (RMS) value

For any periodic

function x(t) in

RMS (Effective) Value

For the sinusoid i(t) = Im cos ωt, the rms value:

Similarly, for v(t) = Vm cos ωt

This is only valid for sinusoidal signals
