Adverbs in English

► Roles of adverbs : It is used to clarify how someone does something. They can
modifify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Example : I am sincerely sorry (Je suis
sincèrement désolé)
► Differents adverbs :
1- Abverbs of place = LES ADVERBES DE LIEU : They used to indicate a place
 above => au-dessus
 abroad => à l’étranger
 anywhere => n’importe où
 away => au loin
 behind => derrière
 downstairs => en bas
 everywhere => partout
 here => ici
 home => à la maison
 inside, outside => a l’intérieur, à l’extérieur
 nowhere => nulle part
 out / outside => dehors
 somewhere => quelque part
 there => là
 underground => sous terre
 upstairs => en haut (des escaliers)

2- Adverbs of frequency = LES ADVERBES DE FREQUENCE : An adverb of frequency


tell us how often something takes place
 never => jamais
 rarely => rarement
 sometimes => parfois
 occasionally => de temps à autre
 frequently => fréquemment
 often => souvent
 always => toujours
 usually => d’habitude

3- Adverbs of time = LES ADVERBES DE TEMPS : They used to indicate a time or a period.
 already => déjà
 now => maintenant
 today => aujourdbui
 soon => bientôt
 then => ensuite
 yesterday => hier
 tomorrow => demain
 tonight => ce soir

4- Adverbs of manner = LES ADVERBES DE MANIERE : He must add the ending « ly »
to an adjective to get adverb of manner
 correctly => correctement
 carefully => prudemment
 warmly => chaleureusement
 nicely => agréablement
 patiently => patiemment
 quickly => rapidement
 quietly => tranquillement
 easily => facilement
 loudly => bruyamment
 slowly => lentement

5- Negatives adverbs = LES ADVERBES DE NEGATION : They already have a


negative meaning. They can therefore not be associated wiyh a negative form. (Ex: I
could hardly eat anything. => Je ne pouvais presque rien manger).
 Hardly => à peine (difficilement
 Barely => à peine (guère)
 Scarcely => à peine (rarement

6- Adverbs of degree = LES ADVERBES DE DEGRE :


 too => trop
 very => très
 more => plus
 enough => assez
 totally => totalement
 nearly => presque
