The Difficulties that Grade 10 Students face because of Lack of Facilities in SINHS.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

A facility is a place, buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure provided for a

particular purpose that facilitates an activity. Grade 10 is an essential year for students. They

are preparing for a new phase and the curriculum of senior high school. With the help of school

facilities, it can provide essential services that support student’s activities and performance that

can help learning to be more effective and enhance the playing field of an individual. In support

of this, Hallak (1990), identified facilities as the main factor contributing to academic

achievement in the school system. They include the school buildings, classroom, libraries,

laboratories and recreational equipment among others. In addition, studies show that school

facilities have an impact on the school experience of students and teachers. And most

importantly, they also affect the health and behavior of the students.

Compared to earlier grade levels, grade 10 often becomes more complex. “The findings

a firm the expectancy-value theory which assumes that people are motivated to do an activity if

it is perceived to be linked to the satisfaction of personal needs and if there is a positive

expectancy for success” (Deci & Ryan, 2014). So, due to lack of facilities, limited resources can

make it challenging for students and make it difficult to learn effectively. Not all students learn

the same way, some may benefit from hands-on labs, access to technology, or a quiet space for

focused study. Therefore, this study has been conducted to find out the difficulties of lack of

facilities of grade 10 students in San Isidro National High School.

B. Objective of the Study

The objective of this study is to know how the lack of facilities affect the performance of

grade 10 students; to identify specific deficiencies in school facilities such as laboratories,

libraries, and classrooms; and to convey to grade 10 in San Isidro National High School that

adequate facilities can facilitate innovative teaching practices, learning experiences, and student

engagement.

C. Significance of the study

This study will be valuable and significant to (students, schools, teachers, readers and

future researchers)

For Students: This study will help the students to boost student morale and motivation that

students are still challenged and engaged in their learning despite the lack of resources.

For Schools: Knowing which facilities are lacking most allows schools to prioritize upgrades or

seek external funding for specific equipment or improvements.

For Teachers: This study will help teachers use their knowledge to advocate for improvements

at the school board or district level.

For Readers: This study will help the readers to have knowledge about the impact of lack of

school facilities.

For Future Researchers: They might use this as their basis for their upcoming research

projects. This study was mainly concerned with the importance of facilities and the effect of lack

of facilities among the grade 10 students of San Isidro National HIgh School of Montalban,

Rizal.
D. Literature Review

According to De la Salle University, the effect of lack of facilities indicates having poor

facilities, lack of classrooms, overcrowding in classrooms, poor ventilation, crowded canteens,

and more. Other than that, students and teachers could not focus because of the crowded

classroom, and poor ventilation gave students poor academic performance, and they could also

not focus on their studies due to the heat.

According to studies conducted by University Hospitality Management, kitchen facilities

and dynamics are each significantly associated with the performance, that is, the knowledge

and skills of the students in the Hospitality Management program. These findings implied that a

student's interest on a particular field was not, solely dictated by the presence of a complete

facilities and budget appropriated by the school, but also by the skills imparted by the teachers

during their laboratory classes that significantly affect the performance of the students.

This study determined the use and level of satisfaction with the library of students and

teachers at the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City Campus. It also looks at

the expectations of students and faculty regarding library staff, services, facilities, resources,

etc. This study used a comprehensive library user survey with which respondents rated each

statement on the merit of its level of importance, use and satisfaction with library resources,

facilities, services and other things about the library.

According to Beverly D. Jaminal, having facilities in school can motivate students and

make them feel happy and satisfied with the knowledge that they have gained through the

utilization of the school facilities.

Based on the study by Orlando L. Fajardo, the educational facilities at Basilan's public

elementary schools have a moderate impact on teachers' ability to teach. The aspects of

equipment and utilities have the biggest impact on teachers' ability to teach.

According to Jeffrey A. Lackney and Lawrence O. Picus, effective school facilities are

also responsible for changing programs of educational delivery, and they should provide a
physical environment that is comfortable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing, etc. So that students

can be motivated to learn satisfactorily and comfortably.

Njideka Gloria Ikegbusi (PhD), Fausta Uche Manafa (PhD), Rowland Chima Iheanacho

(PhD) (2022), poor school facilities affect students, especially their academic achievements.

Based on the findings, the study concluded that school facilities are very important for achieving

quality academic performance of students in any school.

Based on Entrepreneurship and Business at the University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK)

City Campus. A new University is sometimes unable to provide enough facilities to students,

which may affect their performances. Classrooms, teaching aids, and libraries Limited access to

educational materials, inadequate teaching aids, libraries, and classrooms may cause students

to struggle to grasp abstract concepts, leading to lower performance.

According to Ramli Rosmaizura Mohd Zain Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Business,

Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, City Campus, these studies, research-based facilities that

consider air quality, acoustics and noise, access to natural lighting, temperature control, flexible

and open workspaces, building condition and aesthetics, and classroom size positively affect

academic performance in children. A new university is sometimes unable to provide enough

facilities to students, which may affect their performance.

Nicole C. Edwards (The Ohio State University, 2006), studies have shown that the

availability and adequacy of physical facilities have a positive correlation with academic

performance. This includes providing standard-sized classrooms, libraries, laboratory rooms,

and other necessary facilities. Secondly, there is a need for proper maintenance and

management of facilities to ensure they are in good condition and can stand the test of time.
