2. Joe and Balpreet, while blowing balloons for Ishpreet’s birthday, wondered about the innumerable
balloons they had blown since childhood.
Balpreet: Joe, have you noticed that the balloon always grows quickly when it is little and slower as
it gets bigger.
Joe: Yeah, I am sure the answer to this mystery lies in calculus!!
2
i. Explain what Joe means.
ii. Mathematically validate Balpreet’s statement by assuming that you are blowing air in a 4
balloon at a rate of 300 cubic inches per minute and find the rate at which its radius is
increasing when the radius is (a) 3 inches (b) 5 inches.
4
Assume that the balloon is a sphere whose volume is given by 3 𝜋𝑟 3

3.
(iii) Why did the derivative function return a minimum value for the surface area of the cylinder,
why not the maximum? The derivative of the volume on the other hand (in questions where
volume is variable) always returns a maximum. Why?
[BONUS 2 marks]
(Note: the question is not asking you the logic behind the second derivative or the first derivative
test – its asking you why that happens contextually/practically?)
4. i. Determine the coordinates and nature of each of the two turning points on the curve 6

ii. Find the equation of the normal to the curve at the point (3, 13) and find the x-coordinate of
the point where this normal cuts the curve again. 6
