Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
self-learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning
module.
This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATION
Module 4: Problem Solving on Sets using Venn Diagrams
1. To solve problems involving sets with the use of Venn Diagrams
PRETEST
Directions: Use the Venn diagram below to answer the questions that follow.
Choose the letter of the correct answer.
The Venn Diagram below shows the result of the students’ responses on
their internet connection.
1. How many students have both mobile data and broadband/DSL connections?
A. 4 B. 7 C. 9 D. 30
2. How many students have mobile data but not broadband/DSL connections?
A. 13 B. 30 C. 34 D. 50
3. How many students have neither mobile data nor broadband/DSL connections?

Directions: Analyze the given operations of sets then identify its corresponding
Venn Diagram on the choices below. Write only the letter of your answer on the
space provided.

LESSON
In this self-learning module lesson, we will show how to analyze and solve
word problems using Venn Diagrams.
1. Fifty-eight students in a class were asked about the kind of learning tools
available in their homes for the new normal in education. The results were as
follows:
To solve the given problem, we can use the Venn Diagram to show clearly
the details of the given data.
Problem Analysis:
How many students were surveyed?
(There were 58 students surveyed.)
2. Two hundred twenty students were surveyed on the possible problems if online
learning will be implemented as the modality of teaching and the responses
were the following:
To solve the given problem, we will be using the Venn Diagram to show
clearly the details of the given data.
Problem Analysis:
How many students were surveyed?
(There were 220 students surveyed.)
How many circles are we going to draw? Why?
(We will draw three circles because it is stated in the problem that there are
3 groups involved: lack of gadgets, no internet source/connection and
inability on independent learning)
What kind of Venn diagram should we draw?
(We should draw three overlapping circles because it is stated in the problem
that 12 students have all the three problems.
1. Write in the innermost overlap of the circles the given that is common
among the three sets which is 12 since 12 students have all the three
problems.
2. Then, write the value in the circle that has both lack of gadgets and no
internet source/connection which is 21 minus 12 equals 9.
3. Then, write the value in the circle that has both no internet
source/connection and inability on independent learning which is 30
minus 12 equals 18.
4. Then, write the value in the circle that has both lack of gadgets and
inability on independent learning which is 22 minus 12 equals 10.
5. On the outermost part of the circle A, write the value in the circle that
has lack of gadgets only which is 81–9-12-10 equals 50.
6. On the outermost part of the circle B, write the value in the circle that
has no internet source/connection only which is 123-9-12-18 equals 84.
7. On the outermost part of the circle C, write the value in the circle that
has inability on independent learning only which is 77-10–12-18 equals
37.
Therefore, we can answer the given questions since we have drawn already
the Venn Diagram.
ACTIVITIES
Directions: Analyze the given word problems. Write your answers only.
5) ______
WRAP-UP
Remember that…
When analyzing and solving problems about sets, you need to remember the
meaning of the words that are being used. In word problems involving sets, and
means intersection, or means union, either or also means union while neither
nor means the complement of the two given sets.
VALUING
Problem solving helps us to become analytical and critical thinkers not only
in Mathematics but also in real life situation. As you enter the teenage chapter of
your life, it is unavoidable to encounter lot of challenges along the way. In a form of
art or writing, express your thoughts or insights on how you face your problems.
POSTTEST
Directions: Analyze the given questions. Write your answers on the space
provided.
A. Analyze the given word problem. Answer the questions that follow.
One hundred (100) teens are asked to choose which mobile game is
more popular. They can choose between Mobile Legends and Call of Duty. The
Venn Diagram shows the result of the survey.
_____________ 1. How many teens chose mobile legends and call of duty?
A. 7 B. 26 C. 28 D. 39
_____________ 3. How many teens chose neither mobile legends nor call of duty?
A. 7 B. 26 C. 28 D. 39
_____________ 4. How many teens chose either mobile legends or call of duty?
A. 54 B. 65 C. 67 D. 93
