LESSON

In this self-learning module lesson, we will show how to analyze and solve
word problems using Venn Diagrams.

Let us try this word problem.

1. Fifty-eight students in a class were asked about the kind of learning tools
available in their homes for the new normal in education. The results were as
follows:

49 students have cellular phones

10 students have laptops
7 students have both cellular phones and laptops
A. How many students have cellular phones only?
B. How many students have laptops only?
C. How many students have either the cellular phones or the laptops?
D. How many students have neither the cellular phones nor the
laptops?

To solve the given problem, we can use the Venn Diagram to show clearly
the details of the given data.

Problem Analysis:
 How many students were surveyed?
(There were 58 students surveyed.)

 How many circles are we going to draw? Why?

(We will use two circles because it is stated in the problem that there are 2
groups involved: cellular phones and laptops.)

 What kind of Venn diagram should be drawn?

(We will draw two overlapping circles because it is stated in the problem that
7 students have both cellular phones and laptops. The word clue is both
which means that the circles are overlapping or joint.)

U First, write the value in the

cellular overlap (7) the number of students
Laptop
phone that has both cellular phones and
Modula laptops.

Then, write the number of

(49-7) (10-7)
students in the circle that has
42 7 3 laptops (10) minus the number of
students that has both cellular
6 phones and laptops (7) so, the result
will be the number of students with
laptops only (3).
Since 42+7+3 = 52 have Then, write the number of
either the cellular phones or students in the circle that has
the laptops. Subtract this (52) cellular phones (49) minus the
from the total number of number of students that has both
students (58), therefore there cellular phones and laptops (7) so,
are 6 students who have the result will be the number of
neither the cellular phones students with cellular phones only
nor the laptops. (42).

To check, we have 42 + 7 + 3 + 6 = 58.

When analyzing and solving problems about sets, you need to

remember the meaning of the words that are being used. In word problems
involving sets, and means intersection, or and either or mean union while
neither nor means the complement of the two given sets.

Let us analyze the next problem.

2. Two hundred twenty students were surveyed on the possible problems if online
learning will be implemented as the modality of teaching and the responses
were the following:

81 students lack gadgets

123 students have no internet source/connection
77 students have inability on independent learning
21 students both lack gadgets and no internet source/connection
30 students both have no internet source/connection and
inability on independent learning
22 students both lack gadgets and inability on independent
learning
12 students have all the three problems

A. How many students have lack of gadgets only?

B. How many students have no internet source/connection only?
C. How many students have inability on independent learning only?
D. How many students have either lack of gadgets or have no internet
source/connection?
E. How many students have either no internet source/connection or have
inability on independent learning?
F. How many students have either lack of gadgets or inability on
independent learning?

To solve the given problem, we will be using the Venn Diagram to show
clearly the details of the given data.

Problem Analysis:
 How many students were surveyed?
(There were 220 students surveyed.)
 How many circles are we going to draw? Why?
(We will draw three circles because it is stated in the problem that there are
3 groups involved: lack of gadgets, no internet source/connection and
inability on independent learning)
 What kind of Venn diagram should we draw?
(We should draw three overlapping circles because it is stated in the problem
that 12 students have all the three problems.

Let A = lack of gadgets

B = no internet
source/connection
C = inability on
independent learning

1. Write in the innermost overlap of the circles the given that is common
among the three sets which is 12 since 12 students have all the three
problems.
2. Then, write the value in the circle that has both lack of gadgets and no
internet source/connection which is 21 minus 12 equals 9.
3. Then, write the value in the circle that has both no internet
source/connection and inability on independent learning which is 30
minus 12 equals 18.
4. Then, write the value in the circle that has both lack of gadgets and
inability on independent learning which is 22 minus 12 equals 10.
5. On the outermost part of the circle A, write the value in the circle that
has lack of gadgets only which is 81–9-12-10 equals 50.
6. On the outermost part of the circle B, write the value in the circle that
has no internet source/connection only which is 123-9-12-18 equals 84.
7. On the outermost part of the circle C, write the value in the circle that
has inability on independent learning only which is 77-10–12-18 equals
37.

Therefore, we can answer the given questions since we have drawn already
the Venn Diagram.

A. How many students have lack of gadgets only? 50

B. How many students have no internet source/connection only? 84
C. How many students have inability on independent learning only? 37
D. How many students have either lack of gadgets or have no internet
source/connection? 21
E. How many students have either no internet source/connection or have
inability on independent learning? 30
F. How many students have either lack of gadgets or have inability on
independent learning? 22

To check, we have 50 + 84 + 37 + 9+ 18+ 10 +12 = 220.

ACTIVITIES

Directions: Analyze the given word problems. Write your answers only.
