Exercise 4 3+6+3 = 12 marks

Let A = {1; 2; 4; 5}, B = {2; 3; 5; 6; 7} and C contains all positive prime numbers smaller than 10.

1) Draw a Venn diagram of the 3 sets.

2) Enumerate the elements of the following sets

(a) B ∪ (A ∩ B) (b) (C ∪ B) ∩ A (c) (C ∩ B) ∪ (B ∪ C)

3) Is A a subset of B ∩ (A ∪ C)? Explain.

Exercise 5 5+(2+1+2) = 10 marks

The 60 students of a class were able to choose IT, mathematics and physics classes. 19 students
study IT, 23 mathematics, 31 physics, 8 are enrolled in IT and in mathematics, 9 in mathematics and
in physics, 11 in IT and in physics and finally 5 students chose the three subjects.

1) Represent this information on a Venn diagram.

2) Using the Venn diagram

(a) determine how many students chose none of these 3 subjects.

(b) determine how many students study exactly one of these subjects.
(c) determine how many students study mathematics or physics, but not IT.
