Your lecturer will divide you into groups consisting of 5 - 6 students.

1. Form a WhatsApp group, introduce yourselves to one another.


Familiarise yourselves with the assessment.

2. In your WhatsApp group, decide on a group leader. The group leader


has the responsibility of making sure that each member participates in
the assessment and has to submit the assessment to your lecturer on
the due date via email. Select a group leader who will diligently fulfill
his/her role in ensuring that all processes are adhered to during each
meeting session whether online or face-to-face.
Your lecturer will provide their correct email address.

3. Complete the assessment on the answer sheet provided and submit


ONLY the answer sheet on the due date.

Remember to complete the group details (initials, surname, Student


number) of each group member.

Attach the TWO ARTICLES.

The assignment should be TYPED.


Technical guidelines: Use Arial size 12, 1.5-line spacing.

4. You have to use at least two(2) sources.

Part A:

• Choose one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as a topic.


• Select an article about your ‘Wonder’ and attach it to your answer sheet.
The article should not exceed ¾ of a page.

Identify information regarding this ‘Wonder’ that could be successfully


displayed on a graph:

1. Select the correct type of graph for your group’s specific identified
information. (2)
2. Draw and complete the graph. (7)
3. Motivate why you chose the specific graph to present the information. (3)

Part B:

Use the article in Part A to answer the following questions:

1. Identify a sentence in the article that is a clear example of bias. (1)

3. Read the article and select a factual statement.

QUESTION 2

Overview:

In this section of the assessment, you will conduct a comprehensive critical analysis

of a chosen written piece. The purpose is to develop your skills in identifying and

evaluating various elements within a written document, including perception, facts,

opinions, denotation, connotation, bias, and stereotyping. Through this analysis, you

will enhance your ability to approach texts critically, recognise different perspectives,

and articulate your findings effectively.

INSTRUCTIONS: READ this document carefully

1. Choose a written piece concerning the influence that social media has
on students or society in general (positive or negative):

• Each group must select a written piece, which can be a newspaper


article, a piece containing an opinion, a blog or an online conversation
piece.
• The selected text should be substantial enough to allow for an
in-depth analysis of perception, facts, opinions, denotation,
connotation, bias, and stereotyping.
The written piece should not exceed ¾ of a page.

2. Analysis Components:

A. Perception:

• Evaluate, by writing 4 or 5 sentences, how the author's perception of


the subject matter influences the tone, language, and overall
presentation of the written piece or advertisement etc.

B. Facts and Opinions:

• Distinguish between factual information and opinions within the text.


• Identify three instances, by quoting, where the author presents facts
and where personal opinions or interpretations are evident.

C. Denotation and Connotation:

• Analyse three denotative (literal) and/or connotative (implied or


associated) meanings of significant words or phrases used in the text.
Quote the text.
• Discuss how the author's word choices impact the message conveyed
in the examples used.

D. Bias and Stereotyping:

• Identify at least three instances of bias or stereotyping in the written


piece.
Quote the text.
• Analyse how these biases or stereotypes affect the audience's
perception of the subject matter and the credibility of the author.

E. Group Work guidelines, language and references;

• Each group member should actively participate in the analysis process.
