So, my concentration is cybersecurity, but I've done enough IT stuff that I can apply to basically any
computer science or information technology job on the market as long as I meet the qualifications. I've
included the qualifications from the job listing but will go through the basics of each one and why I feel
my concentration is suitable for each of the jobs.
The first job is an IT technician job which only requires being proficient in Microsoft applications with
approximately a combination of 2-4 years of higher education and 2-4 years of related manufacturing
experience. The job is mainly maintaining the systems they have in place and supporting production to
reduce equipment and tooling downtime. Realistically most of the manufacturing side of the job I would
have to learn on the fly but learning their systems should be easier due to my concentration and IT work.
The second job was as a remote technical analyst where I would develop new reports, and technical specs
for functional requirements, ensuring day-to-day business operations, and more. The main thing looks like
dealing with help desk tickets and providing 24x7 support. My main issue with the job is that if you're
taking the qualifications, it requires a bachelor's in a computer science field, 5+ years of specific coding
use, 3+ using a specific monitoring coding language, knowing multiple different coding techniques and
languages native to a specific coding language application. There are a bunch of other business
competencies it suggests but as I am starting my career, I don’t have the business experience that they are
looking for. Realistically my college experience has made me super flexible with learning coding in a new
language in a month so I probably could get a lower position in the company and work my way up or do
certifications on the side.
The third job I picked is a remote IT business analyst for financial information systems. The position is
summarized as “From creating comprehensive end-user documentation to customizing off-the-shelf
software, you'll make a direct impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of our healthcare systems. With a
supportive and collaborative environment, your creativity and attention to detail will thrive as you
manage multiple projects and develop a deep understanding of our healthcare IT landscape.” So basically,
I'm analyzing and documenting everything within their system and developing their healthcare practices
within the system. Job requirements look standard for normal office work outside of wanting 5+ years of
experience in healthcare and 3+ years working with ERP systems. Doesn’t quite fit the concentrations I've
picked but could probably pick up on the business side of the job easily since I've had experience working
in an office environment.
The next job I picked is as an IT information risk assessor. The job’s main responsibility is assessing,
verifying, reviewing, and auditing technology controls and business processes across the whole company.
This also includes risk identification for using 3rd and 4th party vendors for consistency with business IT
policies and standards. This job requires qualifications of a bachelor’s or something else comparable. It
also asks for 5-6 years of assessing security or cyber risk and that is where I’m going to fall short of the
qualifications. I at most have six months from one of my internships but it wasn’t hard assessment
focused. They are also asking for certifications for both app certification and security compliance, neither
of which I have but could acquire in the next year. Otherwise, my concentration for this job as part of
doing the cybersecurity work was assessing risks and being able to communicate them.
The final job I found is an IT auditor job. Says the job will be assisting the senior director in evaluating
the reliability and integrity of the company's information systems, processes, and projects, providing
management relevant and accurate info and analysis regarding system design, project management, risks,
and internal controls. Wants applications to a bachelor in a related field along with 2-5 years of info tech
auditing experience as well as knowledge of cybersecurity/info tech framework, general accounting
principles, data analytics, and a professional cert but also be willing to travel periodically. I feel this lines
up with my concentration very well due to evaluating their systems falls directly within what I did in my
csit concentration but would either need to start in a lower position or go get the certs that they want.
I think the main thing that I'm seeing is that my concentration gives me the ability to apply to a ton of the
jobs on the market, but I will need to gain some certifications underneath my belt to fit better into a lot of
these roles. However, most of csit prepared me for basic IT work while the cybersecurity portion helped
me understand systems that business are using and how to assess them. My experience working in IT and
IT operations will probably help me when it comes to dealing with the business side of the work but
would have to get accustomed to what they are looking for and the practices they are using.
