Option Codes for MAC

You may want to look for free downloads of software for your personal use, but as a help
for you to insert tone marks for the Pinyin that you are required to type for the Chinese 1
course. Below is a single document that you can use to copy and paste or learn hotkey
shortcuts for typing your desired character.
ā á Option + e + a = á ǎ à Option + ` + a = à

ē é Option + e + e = é ě è Option + ` + e = è

ī í Option + e + i = í ǐ ì Option + ` + i = ì

ō ó Option + e + o = ó ǒ ò Option + ` + o = ò

ū ú Option + e + u = ú ǔ ù Option + ` + u = ù

ǖ ǘ ǚ ǜ

ü Option + u + u = ü

As you will see throughout Chinese 1, there are some singular vowels in various Pinyin
syllable spellings but a lot of vowel combinations. There are specific rules that you must
follow when placing tone marks over the vowels that are combined with others.

1. A and e always take the tone mark. (There are no Mandarin syllables in Hanyu Pinyin that contain both a and e.)
2. In the combination ou, o takes the mark.
3. In all other cases, the final vowel takes the mark.

The possible vowel combinations are listed below, with the vowel that receives the tone
marked as second tone.
