Ví dụ: “NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER” (tức không quá ba
three-year-old).

Ví dụ: “NO MORE THAN THREE
WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER” (tức không quá ba từ hoặc/ và một số), tức là giới hạn về
từ vựng là ba từ, giới hạn về số là một số hoặc dãy số, và câu trả lời dài nhất mà thí sinh
được viết cho mỗi câu hỏi có độ dài ba từ và một số.
Ví dụ
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the text for each
answer.
Write your answer in boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet
Complete the notes below.
Choose ONE WORD ONLY from the passage for each answer.
Write your answer in boxes 1–5 on your answer sheet.
Dartmouth Test
Participants: 28 students divided into 1 ……………….. groups with the same number
of members
• Engineering students: had knowledge about mechanical engineering and phys-
ics

Tests: the students looked at photographs of buildings, bridges and other similar
3 ................ in an fMRI scanner. After that, the participants looked at the subsequent
images with arrow showing 4 ………………………. forces. Then they were asked wheth-
er the labels were right.

Dạng 4. Xác định tính đúng/sai của thông tin – TRUE/FALSE/
NOT GIVEN
Sai/ hay Không có (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN).
GIVEN.
Ví dụ phân biệt nhận định FALSE và NOT GIVEN:
Thông tin trong bài đọc: A great number of people in New Zealand choose to educate
their children at home.
A. Only a few people in New Zealand choose to homeschool their children. (Chỉ có ít
người ở New Zealand chọn giáo dục con cái họ tại nhà.) → FALSE vì sai về mặt nội dung.
B. The majority of people in New Zealand choose to homeschool their children. (Hầu hết
người ở New Zealand chọn giáo dục con cái họ tại nhà.) → NOT GIVEN vì thông tin trong
NOT GIVEN
Tương tự như dạng bài ở trên, thí sinh thường hay nhầm lẫn giữa NO và NOT GIVEN.

Look at the following research findings and the list of researchers below.
Match each research finding with the correct researcher, A, B or C.
Write the correct letter, A, B or C, in the boxes 1 - 4 on your answer sheet.
NB You may use any letter more than once.
1. The amount of energy expended from doing exercise is not equally matched with
the amount of calories gained from food.
2. The purpose of exercise is far more significant than to help a person lose weight.
3. Energy expenditure from a person’s daily activities, besides regular workouts, can
largely determine their body weight.
4. Some evidence suggests that people underestimate the complexity of what caus-
es obesity.
A. Herman Pontzer
B. Glenn Gaesser
C. James Betts
• Khi đề bài cho “You may use any letters more than once”, thí sinh có thể chọn 1 đáp án
cho 2 câu (ví dụ đáp án B cho cả câu 14 và 15).

Unit
....................................................................................................................................................................
..................................................................................................................................................................

Students largely chose to undertake their own project, refining the question and its
scope during their first term with their supervisor's assistance.
Ví dụ 2
But boredom may itself be a highly useful human capacity, at least according to
some psychologists and neuroscientists, who have begun examining it not just as
an accomplice to depression and addiction but as an important source of creativity,
well-being and our very sense of self.
...................................................................................................................................................................

Observational studies range in size and detail; we may observe a single patient
at the bedside or conduct a wide census – a population count conducted each
decade. Studies may or may not have a planned control group.
means, refers to, that/ which is, consists of.
Ví dụ 2
Vivisection which is the practice of performing operations on live animals for medical
research...

Recently, there has been some growing excitement about new drugs that have the power
to help unleash the immune system to destroy cancer cells. In the 1890s, William Coley, a
surgeon from the New York Cancer Hospital discovered that cancer patients who suffered
from infections after surgery sometimes saw their cancers regress. His findings led to the
development of Coley’s toxins, a cocktail of inactive bacteria injected into tumors that
occasionally resulted in complete remission. But eventually the use of this treatment fell
out of favor.

Another popular idea about diet and health is that drinking red wine does wonders for
your heart. Although it was once thought to have unique properties, other types of alcohol
can have the same benefits. A study conducted at the University of Texas revealed that
people who drank red wine did not live any longer than those who drank other kinds of
spirits, such as beer or white wine. It seems that the alcohol itself improves an individual’s
health by raising the levels of good cholesterol and decreasing bad cholesterol.

impressive, but it’s notable for two reasons. One is that the monster arm has emerged

This milestone was reached with little ceremony last month at the Santiago MakerSpace,
a technology and design studio in the Chilean capital. The toy limb’s shape was
determined according to the wishes of its designer, as gleaned from a headset picking up
his brainwaves. The man in question was George Laskowsky, Chief Technical Officer of
Thinker Thing, the Chilean start-up developing the mind-controlled 3D printing system.
Engineers and designers have been using 3D printers for more than two decades. More
recently, prices have tumbled and desk-top devices are increasingly being aimed at
consumers. The promoted possibilities appear to be endless – from bones to buildings to
burritos – making some observers predict revolutionary consequences like the eventual
demise of the factory.

(2) The government is investing heavily in education, which promises a wide range of

2. Mệnh đề quan hệ
All schools in Vietnam were closed during the pandemic of Covid-19, which helped to
ensure the safety of students.

All schools in Vietnam were closed during the pandemic of covid-19,
which helped to ensure the safety of students.
Ví dụ 2
That every child can go to school is important: Việc mỗi đứa trẻ đều được tới trường là
quan trọng.
Trong ví dụ trên, động từ chính là động từ “is”, bổ nghĩa cho toàn bộ “That every child can
go to school”. Động từ phụ là “can go to school”, bổ nghĩa cho “every child”.
That every child can go to school is important: Việc mỗi đứa trẻ đều được tới trường là

Where the accident happened remains
Where Nơi mà … unknown: Nơi mà xảy ra tai nạn vẫn chưa được
biết tới.
Whoever/ Bất kì ai/ The victim believed whatever the thief said: Nạn
Whatever bất kì điều gì nhân tin bất cứ thứ gì tên trộm nói.
Ví dụ
Working extra hours can have detrimental effects on one’s health: Làm việc quá giờ
Many people considered moving away from the city: Rất nhiều người có ý định đi khỏi
After clothes are washed carefully in a washing machine, they are taken out and hung in
the open air.
They carried out research on air pollution while they work in Hanoi

cách liên kết ý (ví dụ: dùng đại từ: him, her..) nhằm tránh lặp từ.
“At the high latitude location of ALOMAR, the sun is on or above the horizon for
approximately 10 weeks around the summer solstice. Despite this, the ALOMAR
RMR lidar measures temperature profiles up to middle mesosphere altitudes (75
km) at any local time, throughout the summer period”

Đại từ sở hữu
Ví dụ 1

None of these ideas is new. All are incomplete.
There are two main factors affecting the nutritional contents of food. The first is the type

nhà máy và giải pháp thứ hai là cấm sử dụng phương tiện cá nhân. Tuy nhiên, cả hai đều không

Từ “however” thể hiện mối quan hệ tương phản giữa hai vế câu.

Although New Zealand is sounding confident about ridding itself of COVID-19, success
isn’t guaranteed. Countries like Singapore that seemed to have the virus under control
have since struggled with a second wave of infections. And China, which appeared to
have stopped the spread completely, is now contending with flare-ups.
Even if New Zealand manages to snuff out COVID-19, the road ahead won’t be easy.
Once the country is virus free, it will need to maintain the total halt on arrivals until a
vaccine is developed and widely disseminated—or risk the threat of reinfection. That’s
a tough prospect for a country where tourism—New Zealand’s largest export industry
in terms of foreign exchange earnings—accounts for 10 percent of GDP and nearly 15
percent of the workforce.
A. The research vessel Xenarcha is about 10 minutes out of the Port of Los Angeles on
an overcast March morning. A gray whale breaches off the boat’s bow, its tail sending a
spray of seawater skyward. The 28-foot boat belongs to the Bay Foundation, which has
restored nearly 53 acres of Palos Verdes Peninsula’s kelp forests since 2013. That’s a
fraction of the 2,500 acres of seaweed estimated to exist a century ago. But it’s a huge
increase since the late 1960s, when kelp had become all but extinct in that area. Rough
water gives way to the glassy calm of Honeymoon Cove and its eight acres of giant kelp,
roots anchored to rocky reefs some 18 to 30 feet below.
B. For decades, this cove was largely devoid of life, devastated by seaweed-eating purple
urchins. The urchins resemble small, spikey balls and are a natural part of kelp ecosystems.
But when the predators that keep their numbers in check disappear, the population
booms and can quickly consume a kelp forest, creating what is called an urchin barren.
Once their food is gone, the urchins, which can live for more than 50 years, lower their
metabolism and essentially hibernate.

each hectare of protected forest, the algorithm was further improved in order to account
for the differences in stumpage residual value. Actually, the average compensation is
differentiated onto five categories of hauling distances which use the same algorithm
used by the National Forest Administration for differentiating the average reservation

Kỹ thuật xác định từ khóa
1 (Keywords)
→ Đáp án: Sir Alexander Fleming was very talented, and he was a famous scientist in the
20th century.

Sir Alexander Fleming is a Scottish bacteriologist best known for his discovery of
penicillin. Fleming had a genius for technical ingenuity and original observation.
His work on wound infection and lysozyme, an antibacterial enzyme found in
tears and saliva, guaranteed him a place in the history of bacteriology. But it was
his discovery of penicillin in 1928, which started the antibiotic revolution that
sealed his lasting reputation. Fleming was recognized for that achievement in
1945, when he received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, along with
Australian pathologist Howard Walter Florey and German-born British biochemist
Ernst Boris Chain, both of whom isolated and purified penicillin.
Ví dụ 2
After working as a London shipping clerk, Fleming began his medical studies at
St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1901, funded by a scholarship and legacy
from his uncle (1). There he won the 1908 gold medal as top medical student
at the University of London. At first, he planned to become a surgeon (2), but
a temporary position in the laboratories of the Inoculation Department at St.
Mary’s Hospital convinced him that his future lay in the new field of bacteriology.
There he came under the influence of bacteriologist and immunologist Sir Almroth
Edward Wright, whose ideas of vaccine therapy seemed to offer a revolutionary
direction in medical treatment.

Bermuda Triangle.
2. There were many fictional explanations for the Bermuda Triangle.
3. Mysterious incidents happened more often in the Bermuda Triangle than in other parts
of the ocean.
The Bermuda Triangle is a mythical section of the Atlantic Ocean roughly bounded by
Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico where dozens of ships and airplanes have disappeared.
Unexplained circumstances surround some of these accidents, including one in which
the pilots of a squadron of U.S. Navy bombers became disoriented while flying over the
area; the planes were never found. Other boats and planes have seemingly vanished from
the area in good weather without even radioing distress messages. But although myriad
fanciful theories have been proposed regarding the Bermuda Triangle, none of them prove
that mysterious disappearances occur more frequently there than in other well-travelled
sections of the ocean. In fact, people navigate the area every day without incident.

Remote working can be beneficial for both employees and companies. From an
individual’s perspective, working from home means that people will no longer have
to spend hours commuting to work and back every day, which means they will have
more time to spend with their family and still be able to fulfill their duties at work.
From a business level, allowing staff members to work remotely can help companies
cut down on the expense for office rental as there is no need to rent a big office for
employees to work together. This money, therefore, can be better spent on other
useful purposes such as developing new products.

Both parents and schools can contribute to preventing obesity in children. However,
the government should be accountable for unhealthy diet amongst children due
to the correlation between the marketing of food and drinks and this problem. To
illustrate, children’s food choices are usually affected by advertising, and they tend
to buy more junk food when they are constantly exposed to images of unhealthy
foods on TV. If the government implements a policy banning companies from
advertising unhealthy food during children’s TV programs, children’s exposure to
junk food will be reduced, leading to a positive change in their eating habits.

There are so many cars on the road that the environment and human safety are under
threat. Besides, everyone wants the roads to be less crowded, but they still want the
convenience of being able to travel by road themselves, and people will not abandon the
car in favor of the train without some new incentives. Therefore, we need to make rail
travel more attractive to travelers by reducing its cost.

There are also several other factors that employers need to take into account when
recruiting new employees, one of which is experience. If candidates have successfully
worked in a similar field before, they are more likely to perform well at work and deal
with given tasks productively. The company also benefits from recruiting experienced
candidates because the cost for training new employees will be minimized. In addition,
B. One thing that technology has successfully facilitated is people’s communication. Tech
tools such as social networking websites, emails or voicemail have helped us overcome
obstacles such as time and distances to effectively communicate. For instance, a student
in the U.S can easily contact his or her family in Vietnam via a built-in messenger or video
call on Facebook or Zalo. In addition, social media creates platforms where people with
common interests can share their experiences and therefore broaden their horizons.

Bài 4
A. The panda, with its distinctive black and white coat, is adored by the world and
considered a national treasure in China. This bear also has a special significance for WWF
because it has been our logo since our foundation in 1961.
B. Pandas live mainly in temperate forests high in the mountains of southwest China,
where they subsist almost entirely on bamboo. They must eat around 26 to 84 pounds
of it every day, depending on what part of the bamboo they are eating. They use their
enlarged wrist bones that function as opposable thumbs.
C. A newborn panda is about the size of a stick of butter—about 1/900th the size of its
mother—but females can grow up to about 200 pounds, while males can grow up to about
300 pounds as adults. These bears are excellent tree climbers despite their bulk.
D. The biological diversity of the panda’s habitat is unparalleled in the temperate world
and rivals that of tropical ecosystems, making the giant panda an excellent example of an
umbrella species conferring protection on many other species where pandas live. In other
words, when we protect pandas, we invariably protect other animals that live around
them, such as multicolored pheasants, the golden monkey, takin, and crested ibis. Pandas
also bring sustainable economic benefits to many local communities through ecotourism.
E. China’s Yangtze Basin region holds the panda’s primary habitat. Infrastructure
development (such as dams, roads, and railways) is increasingly fragmenting and isolating
panda population, preventing pandas from finding new bamboo forests and potential
mates.
Forest loss also reduces pandas’ access to the bamboo they need to survive. The Chinese
government has established more than 50 panda reserves, but only around 67% of the
total wild panda population lives in reserves, with 54% of the total habitat area being
protected.

B. In 1887, Anne Sullivan arrived at Ivy Green to meet Helen and her family. Anne Sullivan
was a determined, young teacher who had lived with blindness herself until undergoing
successful surgery. Anne soon realized the tremendous challenge she faced in teaching
Helen. Helen had received little discipline in her young life due to her physical challenges.
Anne would be teaching her student proper behavior in everyday situations along with
academic lessons. After establishing what would become a lifelong relationship, Anne
began to teach Helen the alphabet by finger spelling the sign language letters into the
palm of Helen's hand. Soon, Helen recognized the letter combinations that Anne finger
spelled to her. The most challenging lesson was to help Helen make the connection
between a word and a concept. The world-changing breakthrough happened when Anne
pumped well water into one of Helen's hands while finger spelling the word "water" onto
her other one. At that moment, Helen understood that a word represented a concept or
a thing. From that point on, Helen had an unrelenting desire to learn. Anne continued to
work with her eager student on finger spelling. Helen soon learned how to read Braille,
write, and even started trying to speak.
C. Helen Keller had aspirations of going to college. She was a person who didn't allow
her physical challenges to deter her dreams. Therefore, in 1900, accompanied by Anne,
Helen Keller began taking classes at Radcliffe College. This was notable for a few reasons.
For one, Helen was taking classes alongside students who didn't share her challenges.
Consequently, she had to devote more time and attention to her studies than the average
student did. Also, at that time in history, it was still an uncommon occurrence for a woman
to attend college. In 1904, Helen Keller was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Radcliffe College in 1904. She graduated with honors.
D. After leaving Radcliffe, Helen Keller spent the rest of her life working on behalf of blind
and/or deaf people all over the world. With Anne at her side, she went on speaking tours
and wrote articles that educated people on the significant role these individuals have in
our society. Her far-reaching work won her high honors such as the Presidential Medal of
Freedom. The long line of famous people who admired Helen began in her childhood with
author Mark Twain. Alexander Graham Bell, William James, and Presidents Eisenhower and
Kennedy are just a few of the others who had the pleasure of meeting with Helen. Though
Helen remained single and had no children, her work with the American Foundation for
the blind allowed her to affect the lives of countless adults and children. Among her other
written works, The Story of My Life, serves as an inspirational book for individuals both
blind and sighted. Helen Keller indeed dedicated her life to helping others. She was a
writer, speaker, and advocate with a spirit of determination known throughout the world.
Her incredible life of eighty-seven years will be celebrated for centuries to come.

bit of overlap. But we think it is safe to say that cranberries are unique in many
ways, and one of these ways involves the manner in which they grow.

B. Historian Alan Booth says there is a growing feeling on both sides of the Atlantic that
the shift from school to university-style learning could be vastly improved. But little
consensus exists about who or what is at fault when the students cannot cope. “School
teachers commonly blame the poor quality of university teaching, citing factors such as
large first-year lectures, the widespread use of inexperienced postgraduate tutors and
the general lack of concern for students in an environment where research is dominant
in career progression,” Dr Booth said. Many university tutors, on the other hand claim
that the school system is failing to prepare students for what will be expected of them at
university. A-level history in particular is seen to be teacher-dominated, creating a passive
dependency culture.
C. But while both sides are bent on attacking each other, little is heard during such
exchanges from the students themselves, according to Dr Booth, who has devised a
questionnaire to test the views of more than 200 first-year history students at Nottingham
over a three-year period. The students were asked about their experience of how history
is taught at the outset of their degree programme. It quickly became clear that teaching

methods in school were pretty staid. About 30 per cent of respondents claimed to have
made significant use of primary sources (few felt very confident in handling them) and
this had mostly been in connection with project work. Only 16 per cent had used video/
audio; 2 per cent had experienced field trips and less than 1 per cent had engaged in
role-play.
D. Dr Booth found students and teachers were frequently restricted by the assessment
style which remains dominated by exams. These put obstacles in the way of more
adventurous teaching and active learning, he said. Of the students in the survey, just
13 per cent felt their A-level course had prepared them very well for work at university.
Three-quarters felt it had prepared them fairly well. One typical comment sums up the
contrasting approach: “At A-level we tended to be spoon-fed with dictated notes and if
we were told to do any background reading (which was rare) we were told exactly which
pages to read out of the book."
E. To test this further, the students were asked how well they were prepared in specific
skills central to degree level history study. The answers reveal that the students felt most
confident at taking notes from lectures and organising their notes. They were least able to
give an oral presentation and there was no great confidence in contributing to seminars,
knowing how much to read, using primary sources and searching for texts. Even reading
and taking notes from a book were often problematic. Just 6 per cent of the sample said
they felt competent at writing essays, the staple A level assessment activity.

B. “All animals—even snakes—need to interact with others,” says study leader Morgan
Skinner, a doctoral candidate in behavioral ecology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada.
To investigate this theory, Skinner devised a novel experiment to assess the personalities
and sociability of eastern garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis). The results showed
that “like us, they seek out social contacts, and they’re choosy about whom they socialize
with,” says Skinner, whose study appeared recently in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.
C. The idea that snakes have close friends may be surprising, but such relationships
are increasingly being found throughout the animal kingdom, from flamingos to bats to
elephants. A recent analysis of vampire bats showed, for example, that bats and humans

both have conditional friendships. Scientists are likely better at discovering friendships
among animals now than, say, 30 years ago, partly because many societies are more
accepting of such a concept, and because researchers have far better tools for gathering
and analyzing the data. Analyzing social networks in wildlife, such as snakes, “has made
huge leaps in the last few decades,” says study co-author Noam Miller, a comparative
psychologist and Skinner’s advisor.

Sloths
A. Sloths—the adorable and lethargic animals living in treetops—depend on the health and
survival of Central and South American tropical forests. They spend much of their lives
in the canopy, snoozing and remaining hidden from predators. The animals live solitary
lives and travel from tree to tree using canopy vines. Located in places such as Brazil
and Panama, the six species of this strange and wonderful animal need healthy forests
to survive. But tropical forests are some of the most vulnerable to deforestation. Loss of
trees means animals are forced to live on smaller areas of land that can’t support healthy
populations. WWF works with communities, governments, companies and other partners
to protect forests and the animals that rely on them.
B. Sloths have an extremely low metabolic rate, which means they move at a languid,
sluggish pace through the trees. On average, sloths travel 41 yards per day—less than half
the length of a football field! Female sloths give birth to one baby a year after a gestation
period of six months. The baby sticks with the mother for about six months, grasping its
mom’s belly as she moves through the trees. This is an important bonding period that
helps the offspring learn and develop. When the sloth leaves its mom after about six
months, it adopts part of its mother’s range, continuing to communicate with the parent
C. Sloths munch on leaves, twigs and buds. Because the animals don’t have incisors, they
trim down leaves by smacking their firm lips together. A low metabolic rate means sloths
can survive on relatively little food; it takes days for them to process what other animals
can digest in a matter of hours. Though not all sloths are endangered, some of the six
species are threatened by habitat loss. Deforestation in the tropical forests of South and
Central America jeopardize the trees sloths rely on for food and shelter. Through a program
called ARPA for Life, WWF helped the government of Brazil create a $215 million fund to
ensure that 150 million acres of the Brazilian Amazon is properly managed. Surprisingly,
sloths are strong swimmers. They will sometimes drop down from their treetop perches
into water and use their extended arms to propel through the water.

D. Wing Shape
Both dragonflies and damselflies have two sets of wings, but they have different shapes.
Dragonflies have hind wings that broaden at the base, which makes them larger than the
front set of wings. Damselflies have wings that are the same size and shape for both sets,
and they also taper down as they join the body, becoming quite narrow as they connect.

B. Antarctic penguin colonies in some parts of the Antarctic have declined over the last
50 years, mostly because of climate change, researchers say. The colonies of chinstrap
penguins, also known as ringed or bearded penguins, have dramatically dropped since
they were last surveyed almost 50 years ago, scientists discovered. The findings became
surprising because, until now, the chinstraps have been deemed of “least concern” by
the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “We really didn’t know what
to expect, and then we found this huge decline on Elephant Island,” Noah Strycker,
an ornithologist and penguin researcher at Stony Brook University, told CNN from
Greenpeace’s Esperanza ship in the Antarctic. “It’s a little bit worrying as it means that
something is shifting in the ecosystem and the fall in penguin numbers is reflecting that
shift.”
C. Every colony of Elephant Island, which is a crucial penguin habitat northeast of the
Antarctic Peninsula, when surveyed, experienced a population fall, as per the independent
researchers who joined a Greenpeace expedition to the region. Elephant Island was last
surveyed in 1971, and there were 122,550 pairs of penguins across all colonies. However,
the recent count revealed just 52,786 pairs with a drop of almost 60%. On Elephant
Island, the size of the population change varied from colony to colony, and the most
significant decline was recorded at a colony known as Chinstrap Camp, which is 77%.
D. Just the days after temperatures hit an all-time high in the Antarctic with 18.3 Celsius
(64.94 Fahrenheit) recorded on February 6, the latest study is published. The previous
high 17.5 C (63.5 F) was recorded in March 2015. Scientists recorded the temperature
at Argentina’s Esperanza research station, according to the meteorological agency of the
country.
F. However, some good news was also there, as the researchers reported an increase
in gentoo penguins population in neighboring colonies, beyond Elephant Island. “It’s
interesting, as a tale of two penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula,” said Strycker. “Gentoo
is a species from further north and they appear to be colonizing the area and are actually
increasing in numbers.”
G. The Greenpeace ship Esperanza has been documenting the threat to the oceans
worldwide and taking the scientists for traveling abroad. For the first time, the Low
Island in the South Shetland Islands, north of the Antarctic Peninsula, has been surveyed
properly. The manual and drone techniques are used by the researchers, from Stony Brook
and Northeastern University in Boston, to survey a series of significant but relatively
unknown colonies of chinstrap penguin here. The results are, however, not yet available.
Greenpeace has been campaigning for the three Antarctic sanctuaries that it would
establish to offer protection to many of the colonies surveyed. These would be off-limits
to humans.

B. That’s all fine when we need to jump out of the way of a speeding bus, or when
someone is following us down a dark alley. In those cases, our stress is considered
“positive”, because it is temporary and helps us survive. But our bodies sometimes react
in the same way to more mundane stressors, too. When a child faces constant and
unrelenting stress, from neglect, or abuse, or living in chaos, the response stays activated,
and may eventually derail normal development. This is what’s known as “toxic stress”.
The effects are not the same in every child, and can be buffered by the support of a
parent or caregiver, in which case the stress is considered “tolerable”. But toxic stress can
have profound consequences, sometimes even spanning generations. Figuring out how
to address stressors before they change the brain and our immune and cardiovascular
systems is one of the biggest questions in the field of childhood development today.
C. In 1998, two researchers, Vincent Felitti and Robert Anda, pioneered in publishing a
study demonstrating that people who had experienced abuse or household dysfunction
as children were more likely to have serious health problems, like cancer or liver diseases,
and unhealthy lifestyle habits, like drinking heavily or using drugs as adults. This became
known as the “ACE Study,” short for “adverse childhood experiences.” Scientists have
since linked more than a dozen forms of ACEs - including homelessness, discrimination,
and physical, mental, and sexual abuse - with a higher risk of poor health in adulthood.
D. Every child reacts to stress differently, and some are naturally more resilient than others.
But the pathways that link adversity in childhood with health problems in adulthood lead
back to toxic stress. As Jenny Anderson, senior reporter at Quartz, explains, “when a
child lives with abuse, neglect, or is witness to violence, he or she is primed for that
fight or flight all the time. The burden of that stress, which is known as ‘allostatic load or
overload,’ referring to the wear and tear that results from either too much stress or from
inefficient management of internal balance, eg, not turning off the response when it is no
longer needed, can damage small, developing brains and bodies. A brain that thinks it is in
constant danger has trouble organizing itself, which can manifest itself later as problems
of paying attention, or sitting still, or following instructions - all of which are needed for
learning”.
E. Toxic is a loaded word. Critics say the term is inherently judgmental and may appear to
blame parents for external social circumstances over which they have little control. Others
say it’s often misused to describe the source of stress itself rather than the biological
process by which it could negatively affect some children. The term, writes John Devaney,
centenary chair of social work at the University of Edinburgh, “can stigmatise individuals
and imply traumatic happenings in the past”.
F. The most effective prevention for toxic stress is to reduce the source of the stress. This
can be tricky, especially if the source of the stress is the child’s own family. But parent
coaching, and connecting families with resources to help address the cause of their stress
(sufficient food, housing insecurity, or even the parent’s own trauma), can help. Another
one is to ensure love and support from a parent or caregiver. Young children’s stress
responses are more stable, even in difficult situations, when they are with an adult they
trust.
As Megan Gunnar, a child psychologist and head of the Institute of Child at the University
of Minnesota, said: “When the parent is present and relationship is secure, basically the
parent eats the stress: the kid cries, the parent comes, and it doesn’t need to kick in the
big biological guns because the parent is the protective system”. That’s why Havard’s
Center on the Developing Child recommends offering care to caregivers, like mental
health or addiction support, because when they are healthy and well, they can better care
for their children.

Researchers at Michigan State University have found that people who report using social
media a lot tend to struggle with decision-making. As part of their study, participants
answered questions about their social media use. The questions were tailored to see how
dependent people were on social media, as well as how they felt when they couldn't use
it and how they would feel about never using it again. After the survey, the participants
completed a common psychological task known as the Iowa Gambling Task, which helps
gauge value-based decision-making skills. During the task, the goal is for the participants
to collect as much money as possible. The researchers found that those participants who
spent more time on social media were likely to have less money at the end of the task.
Meanwhile, those who spent less time on social media finished the task with more money.
In another study, researchers explored what it would "cost" for certain participants to
refrain from using their Facebook profiles for up to one year. Consequently, experimental
auctions revealed that it would cost anywhere from $1,000 to more than $2,000 for
participants to cancel their Facebook profiles for that length of time. Still, some users
refused to bid at all, which researchers believe signaled their dependence on Facebook
and their unwillingness to even consider deactivating their accounts. These results show
just how dependent, as well as addicted to, social media some people are that they would
not even consider deactivating their accounts, despite being paid.
There are some other telltale signs that they may have an addiction to social media.
Following is a closer look at some of the signs that you may be hooked on social media:
Not being able to check social media is not a life-threatening situation. But, for some
people, not being able to get online and check their status and their updates can feel like
one. Even though they may feel embarrassed or confused by their reactions, they often
feel like they cannot control their feelings or their situation.
Sometimes people can be so obsessed with the online world that they have trouble
staying in the moment or paying attention to what others are saying. Consequently, their
faces are often buried in their phones; or, they may appear distracted and constantly

check their phones.
Most people who struggle with social media addiction are embarrassed by how much
time they spend online. So, they lie to their loved ones about how much they are scrolling
social media. They know they should not be online so much, but they just cannot help it.
Whether you want to monitor your social media use, there are a number of steps you can
take to see not only how often you are using social media, but also to determine if you are
using it in healthy and productive ways:
When notifications from social media ping on your phone all day, every day, it can be
challenging not to toggle over to your social media accounts and see what is happening.
For this reason, it can be extremely useful, and preventative, to turn off the notifications
on your social media accounts. This way, instead of social media beckoning you to check
out what people are posting or saying, you are in control. As a result, you are free to check
social media at times that are convenient for you rather than feeling you should check
right away when your phone rings.
On some social media accounts, like Facebook, you can set guidelines that allow you to
see certain social media posts first. What's more, you also can indicate who your "close
friends" are so that you get notifications when they post. When you set up these types of
parameters on social media, you are making it work for you instead of allowing it to push
you into behaving or interacting in a certain way. Additionally, these types of parameters
make it much easier to just see what you want on social media rather than scrolling
through every post in your feed. This way, it is much easier to limit the time you spend on
social media.
One of the best ways to get a picture of how you or your teen is using social media is to
conduct a social media audit. Whether you use your phone's settings or get a free app like
Quality Time, there are countless ways to manage your time and track how much time
you are spending not only on your phone but also on social media, Netflix, and online
gaming. Once you know how you are spending your time, you will be able to set goals and
limits for your social media use.

How beef eaters in cities are draining rivers in the American West
In some western river basins, over 50 percent of the water goes to cattle feed, fodder for cows
that end up as burgers in major U.S. cities. To save rivers, scientists suggest paying farmers to
not farm.
A. It’s not exactly news that the rivers of the western U.S. are in trouble. For decades, their
water has been siphoned off by climate change-fueled heat and an ever-growing human
demand for grassy front lawns and long showers. The biggest user of river water by far,
though, is agriculture—and new research shows that across the western United States, a
third of all consumed water goes to irrigate crops not for human consumption, but that
are used to feed beef and dairy cattle. In the Colorado River basin, it’s over 50 percent.
B. The burgers, steaks, yogurt, and ice cream Americans eat in abundance, the new
results show, is directly related to the overuse of river water—leaving the ecosystems
and communities that depend on those rivers drastically stressed under even the best of
circumstances. During bad drought years, the stress ratchets up on many western rivers,
nudging over 50 species of fish close to extinction or imperilment, estimates the study,
published this week in Nature Sustainability.
C. The good news, says Brian Richter, the lead author of the study and a water expert at
Sustainable Waters, is that the detailed tracing they’ve done gives growers, policymakers,
and consumers a lot of power to make different choices. “We could see the water being
pulled out of a specific river, going to a specific feedlot or dairy, and then as a product
going to a specific place where it was consumed,” he says. And that kind of detail can be
leveraged to make very targeted changes that could save vast amounts of water.
D. The realization crystallized as Richter was driving around the western states on a
road trip, towing a trailer and crisscrossing mountains, high deserts, and forests. The flat
stretches of desert were landscapes he’d known since childhood: sprays of sage scrub
dotting subtle, dry vistas. But the valleys he’d just passed through were lush and green,
blanketed with verdant vegetation. Alfalfa. Hay. Sorghum. Acres of it, waving in the dry
air, destined not for people’s plates but for cows. In turn, those cattle would be turned
into steaks or burgers eaten by people tens or hundreds or thousands of miles away.
The fields could only grow, Richter said, because of vast infusions of irrigation water. He
wondered: Could he and colleagues figure out exactly where the water that fed the alfalfa
that nourished the cows that ended up on the plates of consumers in far-flung cities came
E. They tracked the water taken out of rivers and streams in each little fraction of a
watershed to the places it was being used to irrigate crops, and in many cases could trace
its journey to farms or counties that grew certain cattle feed crops. Then, they could
use economic data about supply chains to trace the journey of those crops from farm to
feedlot, and from feedlot to the place the beef or dairy products were ultimately sold.
They could also estimate how much the water withdrawals from individual watersheds
would endanger fish populations living in those delicate waters. Low summer water flows
in rivers across the region, particularly when caused by water extractions that end up
irrigating cattle feed crops, have added to the local extinction risk faced by nearly 700
species of fish. “The summer—that’s the growth season for many species of fish, when
the water is needed the most,” says Marguerite Xenopoulos, an aquatic ecologist at Trent
University in Ontario. “When water is taken out of the river, and it’s tied to some aspects
of species life cycles of the fish, they can be particularly hard hit.”
F. It’s not particularly surprising that the water diverted from fish living in streams in
the high deserts ends up as a bite of a burger eaten in Laredo, Texas, says Megan Konar,
an environmental engineer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who has
worked on similar supply chain analyses. That’s how supply chains work: resources
from one place feed demand in faraway spots, and cities—jammed full of people who
all need to eat, drink, wear clothes, and more—use up a lot of those resources “virtually,”
because of tethers in the complicated, globe-spanning modern supply chain. So on one
hand, a burger-eater in Texas or Idaho or New York can lighten their water load on water-
stressed parts of the land if they choose to eat something besides beef. But ultimately,
the solutions to the western water crisis require a bigger, more comprehensive approach.
“This is a collective action problem; we can’t leave it up to individual consumers to solve
it,” says Konar.
G. Some 23 million acres of alfalfa are grown across the U.S. The plant was ferried west
during the Gold Rush of the 1850s, when it was a crucial feed source for the cows, horses,
and other grazing animals that settlers relied on for food and labor. Beef cattle and dairy
industries expanded across the western U.S. over subsequent decades, but the animals
needed more feed than they could forage from the dry landscapes—so feed crops like
alfalfa became more and more critical to the burgeoning herds. As large-scale irrigation
projects bloomed across the west, more and more cattle-feed crops could be grown,
supporting ever-expanding herds. “It’s an amazingly adaptable crop,” says Brad Udall, a
climate and water expert at Colorado State University. “It’ll grow from hottest desert
to highest mountain, and get you multiple cuttings a year, and it’s pretty easy to grow.”

Well over a century of land-use history, policy decisions, and complicated water rights
fights have led to the system in place today. But there’s an extra threat layered on top
of the history now: climate change. In the Colorado River, which supplies water to over
40 million people and thousands of industrial users across the West, the average flow is
down 17 percent a year compared to the 20th century average. Up to half of that missing
flow is driven by human-caused climate change, Udall says.
