Position Title: Chemistry Lab Technician

Department: QC
Location: Barranquilla, Colombia

Role: The role of the Chemistry Lab Technical (Analytical Chemistry


Technician) is to prepare and analyze various samples of materials,
whether raw material, in-process samples or finished product in
accordance with specifications and procedures. He or she will be
required to maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation in
good working order and within calibration or validation standards.

Prerequisites: Exhibits an attitude of alertness and inquisitiveness.


Demonstrates strong problem-solving capability by scoring well on the
testing administered.

Demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of


chromatographic techniques and possesses sufficient experience
operating both Gas Chromatography and Liquid Chromatography
systems. Demonstrates the mechanical ability and knowledge to
establish operating procedures and to set equipment up to perform
desired ranges of testing. Possesses language skills sufficient to
understand oral and written instructions pertaining to upkeep and
maintenance of these pieces of equipment.

Experience with other laboratory devices and procedures such as Karl


Fischer, Viscometry, and titrations are pluses.

Essential Responsibilities: Operate laboratory instruments per


operating manuals and written procedures to obtain product analyses
per the product or customer specifications. Instruments include UV
Spectrophotometer, Infrared Spectrophotometer, Liquid
Chromatograph, Gas Chromatograph, Flame Photometer, Brookfield
Viscometer, Karl Fischer, Balance, pH meter and other instruments as
required.

Maintain laboratory instruments including installation of basic parts


such as columns, injection liners, etc. per written instructions provided
by instrument manufacturers.

Carry out standard wet chemical testing methods including, but not
limited to, titrations, LOD determinations, viscosity, etc. following
written instructions provided by customer or standard methods.

Report results of in-process analytical testing in a clear, concise


manner to plant personnel. Based on results of testing, provide further
process instructions per written instructions of customer or project
coordinator. Provide Certificates of Analysis for product release.

Maintain supplies as necessary for laboratory operation. This will


require discussions with the technical manager, supervisors and
project coordinators for future needs. It also includes contacting the
vendors to place the order and to coordinate with Accounts Payable to
provide information for the purchase order.

Assemble and generate laboratory glassware and autoclave systems.


Perform lab syntheses and process evaluations as directed.

Attitudes and Behaviors: Comply with all safety policies, practices


and procedures. Maintain good housekeeping practices, keeping the
work area clean and organized at all times. Perform other duties
assigned by the technical manager.
Participate in efforts aimed at continuous improvement to the safe and
efficient operation of the laboratory.

General Requirements: Position requires previous lab experience, as


well as experience handling toxic materials. B.S. degree in Chemistry
or related field preferred. Must have a good working knowledge of
standard laboratory equipment and be capable of carrying out new
analyses given a written procedure involving standard equipment.
Must demonstrate knowledge of basic mathematical and reading skills.
Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out
instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Must have
manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and to work with
small parts. Position requires eyesight adequate to observe and
describe test results. The ability to wear a respirator while performing
certain job functions is required. May occasionally be required to work
weekends or evenings.
