1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE

1.1 Purpose

Grounding System design calculation of Solar Farm 115/34.5 kV substation and

other related systems is necessary to determine the minimum size of the earthing
conductor required for the main ground grid, to ensure that the earthing design is
appropriate to prevent dangerous step and touch potentials and to provide a safe
path to ground for ground fault currents within the Solar Farm power facilities to be
constructed at Pinugay, Baras, Rizal.

1.2 Brief Description

PH Renewable, Inc. (PHRI), a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corporation (GBP)

has lodged plans to develop a new power station at Barangay Pinugay, Baras, Rizal.
The PV plant has been designed in modular units of 545 Wp with total quantity of
211,020 equivalent to total grow power of approximately MWp115 (model JAM72S30-
545-MR Mono-crystalline Silicon Module). Each table rack consist of 2 x 30 modules
combined into 30 modules per string, totaling to 7,308 strings. The total number of
inverters would be 348 using SG225HX String Inverter.
The 800 V rated voltage of the Solar PV System will be stepped-up to 34.5 KV using
step-up transformers as shown in Figures 1.

The proposed Solar PV power station will be completed and commissioned by year
2022. All common facilities at the power station will be built to cater for operation of the
plant.
Generated power will be exported via power station's switchyard through connection
at MERALCO's new Baras switching station. Connection to new substation Baras
switching station shall be via a single circuit 115 kV transmission line.
Auxiliary transformer will be provided for house load consumption.

In compliance with the provisions of Philippine Electrical Code (PEC),

National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA)
and other internationally accepted standards, considering that the power
station is capable of producing hazardous voltages and currents and to be
interconnected with high voltage transmission system of the Manila Electric
Company (MERALCO), to ensure the safety of the public for these extended
periods of time, Power station grounding system must be properly designed
and installed using the highest standards of workmanship such that reliable
operation of the switching station and adequate protection of personnel.

PSS-EE-005 for the short circuit calculation report.
3.3 Soil Resistivity Results
The resistivity of the soil used in the design calculation is based on the Soil Resistivity Test
Results conducted by a Third Party as shown in Annex D.

4.0 DESIGN BASIS

4.1 Study Tools
The Power Station grounding system design was calculated using Electrical Transient
Analyzer Program (ETAP) software. As required in the ER, Finite Element Method (FEM) was
used for the PV/Inverter area while in the substation and MVPS, IEEE Std. 80-2000 was used.
4.2 Study Tools

 Groundng resistance shall be lower than 0.5 ohm;

* Computed mesh voltage sall be lower than the tolerable touch potential;
and
 Computed step voltage shall be lower than the tolerable step potential.

5.0 DESIGN RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Substation

Based on the results as shown in Annex A-1, the required size for grounding
grid conductors for substation shall be 70 mm2 . However, considering future
expansion of MERALCO network, the grounding conductor shall be 95 mm 2
commercial hard drawn copper wire. The depth of the horizontal grounding grid
is 0.6 m and the grounding rod shall be 19 mm diameter, 3 m long, copper-clad
steel rod of 20% conductivity. There are 24 grounding rods located throughout
of the grounding layout.

Page | 6
GROUNDING SYSTEM CALCULATION
75 MWac PINUGAY SOLAR POWER PLANT PROJECT

For a person with a body weight of 50 kg, when the maximum fault duration is
1 sec, the tolerable touch and step voltages are 519.2 V and 1728.7 V
respectively, while the calculated touch and step voltages are 491.6 V and
544.3 V respectively which are 94.7% and 31.5% of tolerable touch and step
voltages respectively. Hence, initial design is safe.
The computed ground grid resistance of 0.434 Ω is lower than what is being
specified in the relevant standards.
5.2 MV Power Station
Based on the results as shown in Annex A-2, the required size for grounding
grid conductors for MVPS shall be 70 mm2 . However, considering safety
margin, the grounding conductor shall be 95 mm2 commercial hard drawn
copper wire. The depth of the horizontal grounding grid is 0.6 m and the
grounding rod shall be 19 mm diameter, 3 m long, copper-clad steel rod of 20%
conductivity. There are 30 grounding rods located throughout of the grounding
layout.
For a person with a body weight of 50 kg, when the maximum fault duration is
1 sec, the tolerable touch and step voltages are 519.2 V and 1728.7 V
respectively, while the calculated touch and step voltages are 502.1 V and
603.2 V respectively which are 96.7% and 34.9% of tolerable touch and step
voltages respectively. Hence, initial design is safe.
The computed ground grid resistance of 0.447 Ω is lower than what is being
specified in the relevant standards.
5.3 PV Area
Based on the results as shown in Annex A-3, the required size for grounding
grid conductors for substation shall be 95 mm2 copper-clad steel wire. The
depth of the horizontal grounding grid is 0.6 m and the grounding rod shall be
19 mm diameter, 3 m long, copper-clad steel rod of 20% conductivity. There
are 32 grounding rods located throughout of the grounding layout.
For a person with a body weight of 50 kg, when the maximum fault duration is
0.5 sec, the tolerable touch and step voltages are 734.2 V and 2444.8 V
respectively, while the calculated touch and step voltages are 59.2 V and 12.7
V respectively which are 8.1% and 0.5% of tolerable touch and step voltages
respectively. Hence, initial design is safe.
The computed ground grid resistance of 0.024 Ω is lower than what is being
specified in the relevant standards.

6.0 REMEDIAL MEASURES

Page | 7
GROUNDING SYSTEM CALCULATION
75 MWac PINUGAY SOLAR POWER PLANT PROJECT

Although the computed ground grid resistances are lower than what are being
specified in the relevant standards, to further reduce the grounding resistance,
it is recommended that gravel surface of at least 0.15 cm with a
resistivity of 3,000 Ω-m shall be added to the substation and other areas where
personnel are expected to work.
Further, if in case the actual grounding values on the actual installation will not
meet the the required value, additional grounding conductors and rods shall be
installed.
