DESIGN BASIS STATEMENT (Inc. sources of info/data, assumptions made, standards, etc.)
Methodology
This report outlines the loading and design parameters adopted for the structural design of cable posts at
North Portal of SWBMS. The scope of the work includes the analysis and design of Structural steel posts and
framing that are required to carry cable ladders. There are also couple of isolated foundation that supports
cable posts and the design of these are also discussed here. However, generally, these posts are supported
over the walkway/tunnel foundation.
The design has been undertaken in accordance to Eurocodes and their relevant National Annexes.

Cable posts at North Portal - Introduction
The objective of cable posts at North Portal are to carry cable ladders from tunnel to cable
troughs on west side and to the communication cabinet on east side of walkway.
Cable Posts: Four analysis models were prepared to include all the design cases of cable
posts;
Summary of cable posts: The base of cable posts is considered to be fixed at all locations and
they are designed for the weight of cables and tray, wind, and aerodynamic pressures. The
design situations considered for cable posts are Ultimate Limit State, Fatigue Limit State and
Accidental situation of fire exposure.
The analysis and design of cable posts is carried out in Autodesk Robot for all the limit states
except fatigue limit state. The design forces of fatigue limit state are determined from robot
model nevertheless the verification of fatigue strength of member is carried out manually. In
fire exposure situation, the design strength of material is reduced in accordance with BS EN
1933-1-2.
The output from Robot models is presented in Appendix A.
Baseplate: The design of baseplate and welded connection between cable post and
baseplate are carried out in Idea Statica for all the limit states except fatigue limit state. Same
as cable post, the verification of fatigue strength of baseplate is carried out manually.
The output of Ideastatica is presented in Appendix B.
Holding Down Bolts: The design of holding down bolts is carrie dout by Hilti Profis.
The out presented in Appendix C.
Isolated foundations: The analysis is carried out by Robot and design is carried out by
spreadsheets of The Concrete Centre, UK.
Coordination with other disciplines: The coordination with other disciplines is included in
the Appendix D

Note: To verify the susceptibility of the post to resonance, a conservative approach assumes
the stiffness of the cable post to be half of its actual value. Consequently, the fundamental
frequency derived from the analysis is also halved, and the force frequencies are then
compared to this reduced fundamental frequency.

Case 1:
Time required for the train to pass the cable post = 2s
Number of forces cycles during the train passge = 2
Note: The force considered on the post as a result of train movement is taken only when the
train approaches the post and while the train exits the post. It can be seen from the above
figure that the cycles between entry and exit is only 10% of the peak load, hence, the cycles
of impact between the entry and the exit is assumed not to have an effect on the post.
The frequency of force is very low and far from fundamental frequency of cable post,
hence, there is no possibility of resonance.
Case 2:
Time required for the train to pass the cable post = 4s
Ref. Number of forces cycles during the train passge = 3
Note: As described above, the cable post experiences maximum magnitude of force during
train approaches and exits, at coupling of locomotives. Hence, to determine the force
frequency these three cycles were considered.
As above, the frequency of force is very low and far from fundamental frequency of
cable post, hence, there is no possibility of resonance.

Footing 1
Bearing pressure check
Arrangement of footing 2
Bearing pressure = 124.5 kN/m2
(conservatively considered ULS combinations)
Foundation rests on mass concrete beneath footing. Hence, the pressure at the base of mass
concrete should include the weight of it.
The depth of mass concrete = 1.34 m
3
Density of concrete = 24 kN/m
2
The base pressure at base of mass concrete = 156.66 kN/m Safe
2
Allowable bearing pressure = 500 kN/m
