CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM/ STUDY

The increased visibility of same-sex couples in high schools brings potential

Benefits is important to acknowledge the problem same-sex relationships have

facing widespread societal disapproval, discrimination, and legal restrictions.

SOGIE’s, according to Office of Children and Family Services (2016), SOGIE

An acronym for sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Everyone

has a sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. LGBTQ An acronym

for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and/or questioning.

The mistreatment that students facing schools was exacerbated by

discriminatory policies and practices that excluded them from fully participating in

the school environment. Schools impose hard gender norms on students in a variety

of ways for example, through gendered uniform or dress codes, restrictions on hair

length or style, gendered restrooms, classes and activities that differ for boys and girls,

and close inspection of same sex friendship and relationship ( Thorson,2017).

There's a law called the SOGIE Equality Bill that would protect LGBTQ+ people

from this discrimination. However, passing this law has been difficult because of false

information being spread about it. Basically, LGBTQ+ people in the Philippines

deserve to be treated fairly, and the SOGIE Equality Bill would help make that

happen. Also for young people figuring out who they are can be confusing, especially
when it comes to gender identity. Unlike clothes that come in just sizes, gender isn't

always "boy" or "girl." In places where there are no laws to protect people who feel

different, it can be even harder for young people to express themselves. This can

make them feel scared or worried they won't be accepted for who they are.

This new cross-cultural study of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals around the world,

Same Sex, Different Cultures provides a unique perspective on maturing and living

within societies, both historical and contemporary, that not only acknowledge but also

incorporate same-gender desires and relations (Herdt, 2019). This research have a

similarities to the topic that focus on Understanding in deeper meaning of SOGIES

concept in Same-Sex couples. In a study focused in primarily

investigating heterosexual sex, overlooking important contextual factors specific to

same sex experience have a same focuses in our research. Acknowledgment of

homosexuality still appears to be non-existent in many nations, as opposed to Western

countries where homosexuality and gay marriage are accepted and supported.

Undoubtedly, ethnic, religious, legal and cultural values result in an insurmountable

conflict towards same-sex orientation, encouraging individuals to ‘rectify’

homosexuality by entering into an unwanted heterosexual marriage. (Meyer, I. H.

(2020, September).
This research have a deeper understanding same sex couple’s in SOGIE’S

concept and encouraging individuals to ‘ rectify’ homosexuality by entering into

marriage and regarding about same sex couple’s perception and social dynamics.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study will focus the perceptions and experiences of same-sex couples in high

school, focusing on how their relationships impact social dynamics and self-

awareness. The main subject of this study will consist of the Junior and Senior High

School Enrolled in Academic Year 2023-2024. The respondents will be limited to

fifteen (5)couples students, who are in any section or strand of Putlod San Jose

National High School. Also, The student participants will be specifically chosen

based on their experiences and perceptions. On the other hand, This study will also

investigate the social dynamics that exist in the high school environment in order to

identify elements that lead to societal acceptability as well as possible barriers for

same-sex couples.

Significance of the Study

Studying how high school perceives same-sex couples can be significant for

understanding the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth. It can reveal the challenges they

face while highlighting their strengths and the importance of support systems. This

research can also inform schools on how to create a more inclusive environment for

all students. Furthermore, the visibility of same-sex couples in high school can

challenge traditional norms and promote understanding of diverse relationships.

Positive perceptions could also lead to greater self-acceptance and reduced isolation

among LGBTQ+ students. However, it's crucial to conduct such research with

sensitivity and ethics, prioritizing the well-being and privacy of participants.

Recognizing the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community and ensuring their

representation are also essential for gaining a comprehensive understanding.

CHAPTER 1

DEFINITON OF TERMS

SOGIE An acronym for sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Everyone has a sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

LGBTQ An acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and/or

questioning. It denotes a community or coalition of people with diverse gender

identities and sexual orientations not limited to those specified in the acronym itself.

Gender identify - a person's internal sense of being male, female, some combination

of male and female, or neither male nor female

Gender preference - The term gender preference is confusing because it has a

number of at best tangentially related meanings. For example, the term gender

preference or sexual preference is used to describe the desire of biological parents for

either a male or female child and—in the extreme—use a range of odious methods

(e.g., infanticide and sex-selective abortions) to achieve that result.

Gender expression - Gender expression is how a person publicly expresses or

presents their gender. This can include behaviour and outward appearance such as

dress, hair, make-up, body language and voice.

List of Reviewed Related Literature

This study aimed to inspect the protections offered by the Gender Equality Act

(2015) against discrimination. While the Act provides some protection, discrimination

against non-LGBT individuals remains general, particularly in formal factors and

families (Ojanen & Sittichai, 2023). The research focused on understanding the

experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals regarding discrimination based on their Sexual

Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) by reviewing relevant articles.

This study was to examine the relationship among internal factors (mental health

concerns) that affect relationship satisfaction and contextual factors (social support)

that affect relationship satisfaction in same-sex

couples. (Terrel and Dugger, 2018). The researcher more focused in the SOGIE

concept in same sex couple’s and they read the article that discussed about contextual

factors that affect relationship.

This study focus on these students’ reports of their teachers’ positivity

regarding diverse gender expression, as a critical element of school gender

climate.(Jacqueline Ullman, 2019). This research focus on gender expression that

related in their research topic.

This study revealed that males and females differ in self-and other

compassion. Other compassion was positively related to closeness, trust, and social

support. However, self compassion was not related to any interpersonal construct.

(Salazar,2015). The research study regarding male and female compassion, The

researcher read this article that relevance in their study.

This study explores conceptualizations of same‐ versus different‐sex infidelity in

the context of a heterosexual marriage using story completion. (Clarke, Braun and

Wooles 2015). This research focus concerning conceptualization of same-sex and

heterosexual marriage,The researcher read the article that give some information

regarding same sex couples.

This paper examines the importance of the occupational sorting of individuals in

same-sex couples in explaining the economic position of lesbian women and gay men

beyond controlling for occupation in the estimation of their respective wage gaps, as

usually done in the literature. ( Del rio and AlonsoVillar, 2017). This

Social dynamics.
The researchers formally instituted racial and sexual discrimination that

dominated during the apartheid period were eradicated, and equality of all citizens,

irrespective of their race and sexual orientations was assured as one of the key

achievements of a democratic South Africa.(Adeagbo, 2015).The researcher read this

article as it talks about how, in South Africa, they got rid of unfair treatment based on

race and sexuality, which was a big problem during apartheid that give an idea that is

possible involve a LGBTQ.

This research examines how opponents of same-sex marriage have used rights

discourse to construct an identity of themselves as victims, and construct gays and

lesbians as deviant “others.” ( Mello, 2015). The researcher studied how arguments

for traditional marriage portrayed supporters as discriminated against while presenting

same-sex couples as outsiders.

This study focuses in Seniors are often isolated from the larger LGBT community.

Brotman, Ryan, and Cormier (2015) noted that many LGBT groups in Canada are

youth focused, making inter generational connections difficult as youth have negative

attitude towards their older peers, and seniors have difficulty relating to younger

persons who have had very different experiences with, and attitudes around, identity

and disclosure. (Fenge, 2017). This study focus in Canada youth will our research is

focuses in Filipino people.. explored why older LGBTQ+ people might feel alone,

finding that LGBTQ+ groups often focus on younger people and that different

generations have had such different experiences that it can be hard to connect.
This article seeks firstly to consider the justifications for the legal recognition of

same-sex relationships by the state. (Bilchitz, 2016). The researcher starts this article

by looking at the reasons why governments should legally recognize same-sex

relationships.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship among

internal factors (mental health concerns) that affect relationship satisfaction and

contextual factors (social support) that affect relationship satisfaction in female same-

sex couples. (Terrel and Dugger, 2018). The researcher chose read the research

because it looks at how mental health and social support can affect how happy women

in same-sex relationships feel about their relationships. They're using numbers and

data to understand this better.

The result of this study revealed that males and females differ in self-and other

compassion. Other compassion was positively related to closeness, trust, and social

support. However, self compassion was not related to any interpersonal construct.

(Salazar,2015)

This study explores conceptualizations of same‐ versus different‐sex infidelity in

the context of a heterosexual marriage using story completion. (Clarke,Braun and

Wooles 2015). The resaerchers focusing to read that article that they study about

shows boys and girls care differently about themselves and others. When girls care

about others, they feel closer to people, trust them more, and get more support. But

how much boys care about themselves doesn't affect how they get along with others
This paper examines the importance of the occupational sorting of individuals in

same-sex couples in explaining the economic position of lesbian women and gay men

beyond controlling for occupation in the estimation of their respective wage gaps, as

usually done in the literature. ( Del rio and Alonso-Villar, 2017). we chose this study

because it looks at how people think about cheating in marriages when it involves the

same gender or different gender.

We picked this

research because it talks about how South

Africa got rid of unfair treatment based on race and who people love. They made sure

that everyone, no matter their race or sexual orientation, is supposed to be treated

equally, which is a big deal.

The formally instituted racial and sexual discrimination that dominated during the

apartheid period were eradicated, and equality of all citizens, irrespective of their

race and sexual orientations was assured as one of the key achievements of a

democratic South Africa.(Adeagbo, 2015). The reseacher focusing to

discusses how people who are against same-sex marriage use the idea of rights to

make themselves seem like victims. They also paint gays and lesbians as different or

strange.
This chapter examines how opponents of same-sex marriage have used rights

discourse to construct an identity of themselves as victims, and construct gays and

lesbians as deviant “others.” ( Mello, 2015). An study focusing why lesbian women

and gay men might earn different amounts of money even if they have the same jobs.

They're investigating if the types of jobs they choose to do affect how much they earn,

which goes beyond just looking at the kind of job they have. (del rio and alonzo villar,

2017)

This study focuses in Seniors are often isolated from the larger LGBT community.

Brotman, Ryan, and Cormier (2003) noted that many LGBT groups in Canada are

youth focused, making inter generational connections difficult as youth have negative

attitude towards their older peers, and seniors have difficulty relating to younger

persons who have had very different experiences with, and attitudes around, identity

and disclosure. (Fenge, 2017). This research focusing to discuss about how

older LGBTQ+ people often feel left out from the larger LGBTQ+ community. Many

LGBTQ+ groups in Canada are more focused on young people, which makes it hard

for seniors to connect. Young people sometimes have negative feelings toward older

LGBTQ+ folks, and seniors find it tough to relate to younger people who have

different experiences and attitudes about identity and coming out.

There is also a lack of adequate data on the prevalence of SOGIE -based hate

crimes in general. Using the qualitative methodology of semi-structured interviews,

research was conducted with five participants from diverse backgrounds to gauge the

extent to which hate crimes were prevalent and what perceptions they held on police

responses to SOGIE -based hate crimes (Lifuka, 2019)This research give an idea in

researcher about same sex couple’s. This study focusingmabout how there isn't

enough information about how often hate crimes happen based on sexual orientation,

gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). The researchers interviewed five different

people from different backgrounds to understand how common these crimes are and

what they think about how the police respond to them.

CHAPTER 2
RESEARCH DESIGN

Research Design

In the study, The researcher used a case study Phenomenological, which is defined as

a research method that describes the characteristics of the population that is studied.

The data was collected from the respondents at one point in time. This study uses a

qualitative methodology with the goal of collecting and analyzing non-numerical data

to comprehend people's attitudes, beliefs, and motivations in order to better grasp

their social reality. In this study, different schools' students perceptions and

preferences regarding the concept of SOGIE’s in same-sex couple's will be

investigated by the researchers using interviews. Phenomenological research is the

type of research mainly focused on the experience that people go through with regard

to some phenomenon, as well as detailing on how one can interpret such experience.

It is a study whose main objective is in attempting to understand and interpret people's

perspectives, perceptions and understandings of a specific situation, which in this case

is the situation of same sex couple's perception and it's social dynamic and the effects

such an experience may have on the individual. When conducting a qualitative

research such as on the topic of the experience of sane sex couple's perception, one of

the best ways to go may be in conducting interviews, as far as the study is concerned.

When interviewing people who have gone through a similar situation such as the one

in subject, they can be said to have conducted a phenomenological research.

CHAPTER 2

SAMPLING METHOD

The researchers choose a sample of five (5) same-sex couple's participate in the study.

The sample of this study was selected through non-probability/non-random sampling

wherein the samples are selected on the basis of purposive sampling. According to

Etikan and others (2016), purposive sampling know as (judgmental, selective, or

subjective sampling) is a type of non-probability/non-random where members of the

target population that meet certain practical criteria, in which researchers rely on their

own judgment when choosing members of the population to participate in their

surveys are included for the purpose of the study. The researchers used the Purposive

sampling to gather respondents and conduct a interview.

CHAPTER 2

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

Interviews are considered the best instrument for qualitative research on the

perception of same-sex couples and its social dynamics among junior and senior high

school students in PUtlod San Jose National High School. Interviews provide

researchers with an opportunity to directly engage with participants and gain in-depth

insights into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through In interviews,

researchers can ask open-ended questions that allow participants to freely express

their opinions and perspectives on the topic. This enables the collection of rich and

detailed data, providing a deeper understanding of the students' perceptions and the

social dynamics surrounding same-sex couples in the school environment. Moreover,

interviews allow researchers to establish rapport and build trust with the participants,

creating a comfortable environment. Where students feel more inclined to share their

true thoughts and experiences. The interactive nature of interviews also allows for

follow-up questions, allowing researchers to probe further and gain a clearer

understanding of the nuances and complexities of the topic. In addition, The

researchers will be adding a documentary while having an interview in the

respondents, because it is used to collect data in the form of document photos and

videos of the activities, interview transcripts, and certificates of training activities as

attached in the attachment. Also having a documentation makes you able to returned

at the data that you collected in the interview, if you missed some information.
CHAPTER 2

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

The research study involved conducting interviews with students from Putlod San

Jose National High School, to explore their perceptions and preferences regarding

SOGIE in same-sex couples. Through qualitative interviews like open-ended

questions, and accurate data management, researchers aimed to gain a comprehensive

understanding of this important social issue within the LGBTQ community. The

careful approach must be followed, and data collecting must start as soon as we have

decided which design will serve as the basis for our investigation. The researcher also

need to decide how we will collect data, more obviously, after deciding what to gather.

It is also important to remember that the effectiveness and relevancy of the

information will determine how the data is collected. Throughout the entire data

collection process, The researchers need to be aware of any potential obstacles. Thus,

in order for us to their need to make sure that our selection criteria are well stated in

advance in order to collect relevant data. For this reason, when conducting research, .

Open observations, for example, can be used to collect data for qualitative studies.

Next, regardless of the approach taken, they need to make sure that the information

their collect is trustworthy, dependable, accurate, and student. Additionally, the data

collection instruments must be suitable for the study's objectives on.

CHAPTER 2

PLAN FOR ANALYSIS

This study used a Thematical analysis for the plan for analysis. Thematic analysis is a

method of analyzing qualitative data. It is usually applied to a set of texts, such as an

interview or transcripts. The researcher closely examines the data to identify common

themes—topics, ideas, and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly (Scribbr,

20219). You need to familiarize the data that you got in the interview, you need to

analyze and read or listen to the data that you got in the interview over and over again

and generate data, generating data initial codes or codes they will see in the

participants' response, ideas that come to mind while they read the data coding is a

part of analyzing where we organize our ideas into meaningful group they used

semantic they will look for major ideas that putting together to contract one theme and

when they are able to review the themes they thought of other ideas may be

overlooked, name and define them and analyze the theme you will see their

relationship with each other the last they need to interpretation of their data.
