IV. LESSON PROPER

A. PRESENTATION/INTRODUCTION
- VIDEO ANALYSIS

Students will watch a short video about “Attacks on health care in the context of Covid 19: Health
care workers are at risk”. The following questions will be asked:
1. How do you find the video? Is it interesting?
2. From the video presented, what do you think is the social issue all about?
3. Is this happening only in our country or also in other parts of the world?
4. In connection to the video presented, have you encountered someone who had been infected
and discriminated against due to Covid-19?
5. If you are in their shoes, how would you treat someone from quarantine facility?
6. How are you going to react and deal with the issue?

B. ABSTRACTION

Social injustice is a critical issue every country is facing, and it is prevalent nowadays. It occurs in a
situation where some individuals are treated unequally, and others are treated equally.

Value judgment is the judgment of the rightness or wrongness of something, or some based on a
comparison or other relatively or of the usefulness of something or someone. It does not simply
describe the world; they prescribe certain attitudes or behaviors toward the world.
Since it refers to judgment and comparison, there comes discrimination in that certain situation.
Here are the examples:

DISCRIMINATION VALUE JUDGMENT

1. Most of the institution nationwide, do not 1. We consider unvaccinated to attend, but
allow students who are not vaccinated to they shall ask the permission on the
attend the limited face-to-face classes. authority to defend the refuse to get
vaccinated.
2. The employer strictly imposes that only 2. The company must offer a fair promotion
younger employees can be promoted. to all employees regardless of age. It
should not be the basis for promotion.

EXAMPLE ISSUE:

Discrimination Description: The picture shows

gender discrimination at work. Companies hire men
than women in some establishments.

Correct Value Judgment: The company must offer a

fair application to all applicants regardless of gender. It
should not be the basis for job description.

There are two terms on how to convert judgment into a valuable judgment, and these are the
Descriptive and Normative Statements.

Descriptive and Normative Statements

Descriptive Statement is just what you think it is. It describes a situation, or it simply tells us what
the case is. On the other hand, Normative Statement is a claim about something that should be.

Examples of Descriptive Statements:

a. The mug of coffee in front of me is now at room temperature.
b. Kevin is under six feet tall.
Examples of Normative Statements:
a. If you wanted to pass the test, you should have studied harder.
b. President Duterte did his best to defend the country from terrorism, so I think he deserves
more respect.

Things to consider before making a value judgment:

1. Think and analyze the situation before giving your perceptual understanding.
2. Give your value judgment without bias.
3. Before giving statements, always put yourself in the situation they are in and speak your
side as if like you are one of the persons involved in the issue.
C.APPLICATION

The class will be divided into four (4) groups. Each group will be given a different
scenario/situation that describes discrimination. Each scenario will be presented or performed in front
of the class and assign member/s to explain its discrimination description and the correct value
judgment.
