EXPECTATIONS
In this lesson, you will be able to say that listening is the ability
to understand the message that is sent. Listening is as important as
reading, writing, and speaking. Thus, different strategies will help
you enhance your skill as an effective listener.
- Develop listening strategies depending on purpose;
- Appreciate the importance of listening attentively;
- Take note of important details; and
- Retell and summarize what is listened to.

Now, what is listening?

Listening is one of the four


communication skills which is
fundamental in learning any
language. It is the ability to
interpret the message that is sent
verbally through conversations,
narrative stories, songs, or radio
programs.

communicate, to distinguish sounds, and enjoy.

Identify the main idea and
the topic.
“Bats, in fact, perform a number of valuable
functions. Their greatest economic value is in
eliminating insects pests. Insect-eating bats can
catch six-hundred mosquitoes in an hour and eat
half their body weight in insects every night. In
many tropical rain forests, fruit-eating bats are
the main means of spreading the seeds of tropical
fruits. Nectar-feeding bats pollinate a number of
tropical plants. If it were not for bats, we might
not have peaches, bananas, mangoes, guavas,
figs, or dates.
