1 Read the text. What are the animals in the pictures? What is special about the places they live?
The ‘greenest’ places in the world
Some countries in the world have got some very unusual animals and plants. For these ‘green’
countries, protecting nature and animals is an important part of the culture.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a country in Central America, and
nature is the most important part of its culture.
Here are some facts:
• Costa Rica has got 5% of the world’s animals and
plants.
• It is the ‘greenest’ country in the world. It has
got 1,000 types of butterfly, 9,000 types of plant,
34,000 types of insect and 130 types of fish.
• 25% of Costa Rica is a national park. It has got
121 volcanoes, and seven of them are active.
• The highest mountain is Chirripo Mountain, which
is 3,800 metres high!
• The oldest animal in Costa Rica is the sloth. Sloths
live for about 30 years.

The Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, and
they are part of Ecuador in South America. They are
some of the most important islands in the world for
wild animals. Here are some facts:
• 97% of the Galapagos Islands is national park. The
nature here is protected.
• There are 400 types of fish. A lot of animals, like the
iguana lizards, don’t live anywhere else in the world.
They only live in the Galapagos Islands!
• There are 13 volcanoes in the Galapagos Islands, and
most of them are active.
• Wolf Volcano is the highest mountain. It’s 1,700
metres high.
• The Galapagos tortoise lives for about 100 years,
and it is one of the oldest animals on the planet.

Facts about wild cats

1 Read the text about tigers and complete the fact file.

Tigers
Tigers live in Asia in countries like India and Indonesia. There
are only about 3,890 tigers left in the wild. The main reason
tigers are disappearing is because of hunting and loss of
habitat. Tigers live for about 16 years. They eat only meat –
deer, pigs and sometimes even crocodiles! Tigers weigh about
300 kg and grow to about three metres in length.
They are fast runners, but not as fast as cheetahs. Their top
speed is 65 kilometres an hour. They are also good at swimming
and can swim about 7 kilometres.
