Introduction:
Energy is used every day. All activity humans do require energy in some form. Households are filled
with appliances that use electrical energy to make living more convenient. Televisions, rice cookers,
microwave oven, computers, and light bulbs are some examples of the appliances that use different amounts of
electrical power, which is measured in watts. The rate of electricity use is reflected in an electric bill, which is
paid in terms kilowatt-hour.
Electricity in the Philippines is mostly generated from the burning of fossil fuels in coal, and in diesel-
fired power plants. So, every time electricity is used, carbon and other greenhouse gases are released in the
atmosphere. The first step to help reduce the harmful effects of energy use is identifying and understanding
how much energy is used every day.
One simple way to determine expended electricity is to identify the appliance that use electricity in
households and then calculate the amount of electricity each individual use. Then, add up this electricity to
figure out the total electric energy consumed. A comparison of the electricity used by different appliances may
also be done to decide which appliances are efficient.

Procedure:
1. Make an inventory of appliances and electrical items your entire family uses at home. For each
appliance/item, look for the label that indicates the number of watts it uses.
2. Fill in how many hours per day this appliance is used in a typical weekday and a Sunday. Be as
accurate as possible.
3. For each appliance, convert the data into the number of kilowatt-hours of energy that it uses. This
can be done using the formula:
(𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑡 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔)(𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠)
𝑘𝑊𝐻 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑎𝑦 = 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠
1000
4. For your electricity bill, find out the cost of electricity per kWh for your area. Compute for the cost
using it over the given time. Write all your data in the table. (First table is an example for you)
Cost of Use
Electric Appliance Watt Rating Time Used kWh Used (per
(PhP/day) at PhP
or Device (W) (Min/day) day)
7.50/kWh
Microwave 1450 20 .48 3.63

Desk lamp 10 180 .03 0.23
Total 1.05 79

Computer Desktop 550 300 2.75 33.00

Oven Toaster 700 30 0.035 0.42
Total 15.735 188.82
5. Using the total kWh used per day, determine the amount of 𝐶𝑂2 your entire family releases into the
atmosphere per day from your electricity used. Generally, the amount of carbon dioxide (𝐶𝑂2)
emitted per kWh is 1.5lb (1.5lb 𝐶𝑂2 / kWh). Assuming that all our electricity comes from a coal-
fired power plant. Write your computations on the space provided below:

15.735 kWh * 1.5 lb CO2 = 23.6025 lb CO2

kWh

Guide Questions;
1. What appliances and electrical items does your family use on a weekday?
Computer Desktop
Electric Fan (7)
Water Dispenser
Rice Cooker
LED TV
Stereo Speaker
Light Bulb (12)
Refrigerator

2. What appliances and electrical items your family use on a Sunday?

Computer Desktop
Electric Fan (7)
Water Dispenser
Rice Cooker
LED TV
Stereo Speaker
Light Bulb (12)
Refrigerator
Oven Toaster

3. How much energy do you consume on a typical weekday and Sunday in kWh and in pesos? How about
in one whole month?
Typical weekday: 94.41 kWh or 1,132.92 PHP
Sunday: 16.835 kWh or 202.02 PHP
One month: 444.98 or 5,339.76 PHP

4. How much carbon dioxide your family emit in a day? In a month?

In a day: 141.615 lb CO2
In a week: 25.2525 lb CO2
In a month: 667.47 lb CO2

Conclusion:
The monthly energy consumption of 444.98 kWh suggests a significant amount of electricity
usage. This could be indicative of inefficient energy practices or the use of energy-intensive appliances
and systems within the household. While the emission of 667.47 lbs of CO2 per month is relatively high
and contributes to the household's carbon footprint. High carbon emissions are a concern due to their
impact on climate change and the environment. This data shows that our household should adjust for more
efficient use of our appliances to reduce our carbon dioxide emission pointing to our environmental
responsibility.

How do you feel about the result of this activity?

That we are taking our privilege for granted by not being efficient and observant to our energy
consumption. This should be address properly by taking the initiative to lessen the use of different
appliance unless it was really needed.

What can you do in order to lessen the amount of carbon dioxide your family contributes to the
atmosphere?
Educate them about the amount of monthly wattage and monthly carbon dioxide that our
household produce and have them realize that in our small effort, we may be able to help our planet.
