Apolinario Mabini is one of our national heroes. He was born on July 23, 1864, in
Tanuan, Batangas. He came from a family of eight boys. His nickname was Pule. As a
child he was often sickly. Apolinario’s family was very poor. His father was a farmer who
grew rice, sugar cane, and vegetables in their small farm. Pule worked on the farm until
he was ten years old. His job was to take the carabaos to pasture. His mother Dionisia
taught him to read and write. Pule was the brightest of the Mabini children, and that is
why his mother wanted him to be a priest. He always loved to read books. He got
excellent marks in almost all school subjects.
