Macro-nutrients
These are needed in large amount; some of the primary nutrients that are needed by plants are
nitrogen (N) phosphorous (P) and potassium (K). Secondary nutrients are calcium (Ca),
magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S).
Micro-nutrients
These are needed in small quantities, those elements that are needed by plants in small
amount such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), boron (B) and chlorine
(Cl)
Each of these elements has a role to play; they are needed in different amounts for vegetative
growth, root growth, flowering, fruit formation and seed or grain formation.
Hunger signs in crops
When plants do not get enough nutrients, they will show sign of hunger or deficiency. Check
the lower leaves of the plants, for instance; corn plants to see whether they show any of the
sign of deficiency.
N deficiency; yellowish pale green colour of lower leaves. The yellow colour begins
at the leaf tip and runs along the midrib. Giving an upside down v-shaped
underdeveloped plant and low yield. Leaves turn brown and die.
P deficiency; underdeveloped growth with purplish colour of leaves poor root growth,
poor flowering and poor seed formation.
K deficiency; yellow to brown colour of lower leaves, especially on the outer leaves.
