Measurements and Gauge:

For gauge, make a swatch using the shoulder strap pattern of 6 rows with suggested hook for your size.
The 6-row sample should measure:
Size S/M: with 4.5mm hook, strap should be 3 ¾” (10 cm) long
Size L: with 5mm hook, strap should be 4 ¼ ” (11 cm) long
Size XL: with 6mm hook, strap should be 4 ¾” (12 cm) long
Size XXL: with 7mm hook strap should be 5” (13.5 cm) long
If necessary, adjust hook size to achieve correct strap length.

Designer Notes:
❏ The order of crocheting will start with the left front strap, then the right front strap is worked and the
front neckline is crocheted and joined. Next the front panel is completed.
❏ Then work the right back strap onto the strap of the front panel; next add the left back strap and
continue working the neckline and back panel. This is all in one piece. The front and back are now in one
piece, joined at the shoulders.
❏ When inished to desired length, The side seams are sewn and if desired, an edging is worked on the
hem and neck edge.
❏ The different sizes are achieved by using different sizes of hooks. But you may want to increase the
straps to 4-5 rows depending on how low you want the tank to be in the front.
❏ Ch3 is considered irst dc and is referred to as the “turning chain”. Last st of every row will be placed in
the top loop of the ch3 (turning chain) from previous row.
❏ For the step-by-step pictures in this pattern I used a size 5.00mm (size L) hook, and I crochet very
loosely.

Gauge:

Hook sizes - 4.5mm (G/6) , 5mm (H/8), 6mm (J/10), 7mm (K/10 ½ )

Check the length of the strap based on the size you are making.
The strap pattern should have a length of
3 ¾ (4 ¼, 4 ¾, 5) inches; 10 (11, 12, 13.5) cm.

Instructions
Tank Top Front:

Foundation Row: Ch 8.

Row 1: Into 6th ch from the hook work (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc), sk 1 ch, dc into last ch.

Row 2: Ch 3 (turning chain, counts as dc), (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into ch1 sp of prev row, dc into top of turning chain.

Row 3 &4: Repeat Row 2.

Put strap aside, do not cut yarn.
For L & XL you may want to increase the straps to 5 or 6 rows. Use the Gauge above to measure your ideal length
of strap (using a favourite tank top) and adjust pattern.

Second Strap:
With a new ball of yarn make another strap as irst strap, but work one additional row. After Row 4 is
completed, continue with the joining as follows:
Joining straps: Ch 12, place marker on 12th st, ch 11, join with sl st to the top of the turning chain of irst strap,
cut yarn and fasten off.

(Row 3 illustration)

Front Bodice pattern:

Row 5 : With attached yarn, work as Row 2 over irst strap, over the long chain work *(ch1, sk1 ch, dc in next
ch)* 5 times, ch1, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in marked ch, rep from * to * 5 times, ch1, work over the second strap: dc,
(2dc, ch1, 2dc) into ch1 sp, dc into top of dc.
Note: the (2 dc, ch3, 2 dc) will now be referred to as the center shell.

(Row 5 illustration)

Continue as follows:

Note: the strap pattern shell continues down both sides of the garment panel. The irst strap worked is the
Beginning Strap, the other strap will be the Ending Strap. They are worked as follows:
Beginning Strap (worked at beg of row): Ch3, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in ch1 sp of previous row, dc in next dc.
Ending Strap (worked at end of row): Dc in 1st dc of strap, (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc) in ch 1 sp of previous row, dc in
top of turning chain.

(Row 6 illustration)

Row 6: Work beginning strap, *(ch 1, dc in ch1 sp)* 6 times , ch1*, work center shell in ch3 sp of previous
center shell, repeat from * to * then work end strap.
(ch 1 spaces = 6; dc =5) not including the sts in the straps or center shell.

Row 7: Work beginning strap, then *(ch 1, dc in ch1 sp) 7 times , ch1*, work center shell in ch3 sp of center
shell, repeat from * to *, work end strap.
(ch1 spaces =7; dc = 6) does not include shell st or straps.

Row 8 : Work beginning strap, then *(ch 1, dc in ch1 sp) 8 times , ch1*, work center shell in ch3 sp of center
shell, repeat from * to *, then work end strap.

Repeat this pattern

Continue in same manner, working *repeat* in each row one more time, until you reach 24rows from the
neckline chain, or until your desired length.
Hold up and measure to ensure it is long enough for your liking. If too short add more rows by continuing as
above.

(Row 4 illustration)
Row 4: With attached yarn on left corner of left strap, work as Row 2 over strap, *(ch1, sk1, dc in next ch)* 5
times, ch1, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in marked ch, rep from * to * 5 times, ch1, work the remainder of second strap, dc,
(2dc, ch1, 2dc) into ch1 sp, dc into top of dc.

Row 5 - 26: Work same as above for front.

To Finish
There are two options for seaming: one with a blunt needle, the next (my favorite) by crocheting
the pieces together.
Fold garment at shoulder line and seam sides with a blunt needle from the bottom up, matching row for row,
leaving approx. 13” below the top of the strap for armholes. This is a wide enough arm hole for a t-shirt
underneath.
CROCHET LACY TANK TOP 8

My favourite way to seam a garment is to sc on both sides at the bottom st, ch 2, sk 1 and sc in right side, ch2,
sk1, sc on the left side, continue in a zigzag pattern alternating sides until you are 13 inches from the top. Sew in
ends.

Finish neckline with a picot edging OR single crochet, and optional sc edging around arm holes and bottom
edge.

Picot Edging - Sc in the irst stitch, Ch 3, and sl st into irst ch (picot made!). Work 2sc, then make another picot.
Continue working ending with a picot over the second to last sc.
