DATALINK CHECKLIST

ATLANTIC and NAT SOP CPDLC/ADS-C

1. Flight Plan Codes

a. Flight plan codes: SGHIJPRWXYZ/SD. Block 10A – J, Block 10B – D, Block 18
– DAT/SV.

2. NOTAMs
a. Check FIR NOTAMS for planned CPDLC and ADS outages.

3. MEL
a. Ensure there are no MEL items that effect FANS operations.
 FMS (LNAV, VNAV, and ATC)
 Autopilot (AP) or Flight Director (FD)
 Primary Flight Display (PFD)
 Map Display
 Communications Management Function (CMF)
 SATCOM with Safety Services Certification (e.g. Honeywell MCS-7000). VHF
Datalink Radio in Data mode may be used in regions of VHF coverage.

4. Preflight
a. AUTO POS reports should be set to: 15 Min VHF and 15 Min SAT.
b. Insure the correct Flight ID is entered into the TCAS details page.
c. Do not load any non-navigation waypoints.

5. Inflight Operation
a. Obtain oceanic clearance via ORCA when entering via Gander, Shanwick, or Santa
Maria. New York will send Route Clearance Uplink after Logon. If flight path is
close enough to Greenland for VHF data reception, consideration should be given to
changing VHF 3 to voice from data to preclude the possibility of a data comm
lockup.

6. ATC Comm Logon

a. Select ATC from the NAV INDEX, this will display the ATC LOGON/STATUS
page 1/2.
b. Verify FLT ID, TAIL NO, ADS ARMED, ADS EMERGENCY OFF, and
DATALINK READY.
c. Line select the appropriate address to 1L under LOGON TO (ATSU addresses are
listed below).
d. AFN Logon Addresses and NAT Data link Services

e. From 45 to 15 min (25 preferably) from the Oceanic boundary, line select SEND at
6R. SEND should change to SENDING, SENT, then READY. Once the
connection is established, the area near 1R will display ACCEPTED and then be
replaced with the OCA address below ATC CTR at 2R and an ATC COMM
ESTABLISHED scratch pad message will appear. Once the ADS contract is
established, the ADS ESTABLISHED scratch pad message will appear, ADS
ARMED will change to ACTIVE, and the ADS REVIEW will display on ATC
INDEX. Select ADS REVIEW to observe the current ADS contracts.

7. Transfer from Voice Comm to CPDLC

a. The phraseology for the first contact with the Oceanic Control Area is, “Gander
Radio, N550SF, CPDLC, Shanwick next (next FIR or OCA exit point), selcal
PRBC (if first call on HF).” In the NAT OCA, you do not have to request the next
HF/VHF Frequency. The OCA will advise “N550SF Roger CPDLC, voice
reports not required in the Gander OCA at 30W Contact Shanwick primary
#####, and secondary#####, SELCAL coming up”, then acknowledge the
SELCAL check.
b. If the initial call is on VHF, once the radio operator provides the HF frequencies,
obtain SELCAL check on the primary HF frequency.
c. When flying eastbound entering Gander OCA, sometimes Gander is slow in
establishing ATC COMM, so on first call to Gander Radio, say “logging on to
CPDLC” and this will eliminate any confusion about having to provide voice
reports. If ATC COMM is not established soon after, revert to voice reports
including the OCA entry position report.
d. Flight crews are required to submit position reports via voice unless otherwise
advised by the radio operator. To reduce frequency congestion, when instructed
“Voice reports not required in the (assigned OCA/FIR)”, crews should not give
voice position reports.
e. Flight crews should not ask radio operators whether an ADS WPR or a CPDLC
WPR has been received. If ATC fails to receive an expected ADS or CPDLC
WPR, they will request a voice report. If this occurs, flight crews should submit a
FANS problem report.

f. Oceanic Clearances via Uplink

g. If the ATSU delivers the Oceanic clearance via a Route Clearance Uplink,
Review, Accept (Wilco), Print, but do not Activate. Most likely, the lat long
positions will be shown in full format which will not convert back to the normal
flight plan format of Arinc 424 such as 50N70. Make any waypoint changes
manually in the Active flight plan.

h. Transfer to Next Data Authority

i. Transfer of CPDLC Comm services and ADS surveillance services are normally
accomplished automatically by the ATSU and the avionics.
j. Monitor the ATC LOGON/STATUS page 1/2 near 3R under NEXT CTR within 15
– 5 minutes of approaching the next OCA boundary. If a new CPDLC connection
has not been established within 5 minutes of entry, from ATC LOGON/STATUS
page 2, select ATC COMM OFF, return to page 1, then line select the next address
at L1 for LOGON TO, and SEND the request for logon. There is no need to change
the ADS contract.
k. Contact the next Oceanic Control Area, “Shanwick, N550SF, CPDLC (ADS if
only ADS service is available), Malot next (next FIR or OCA exit point), selcal
PRBC.”
l. A SELCAL check is required on assigned HF frequencies at each FIR boundary.

m. CPDLC Waypoint Reports

n. Currently, Gander ATSU is not accepting CPDLC position reports. If you attempt
to send a CPDLC position report while logged on to CZQX, you will receive the
message: “MESSAGE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS FACILITY.” Gander
receives positions via ADS only.
o. In Shanwick Airspace, 5 character formatted (e.g.5115N) waypoints are accepted
for CPDLC position reports.
p. Verify random route lat/long waypoints are displayed in a 7 character format (e.g.
N52W075) prior to sending the CPDLC position report. This should be done
automatically which can be seen when verifying the downlink.

q. CPDLC Downlink Messages

r. If the ground system receives a downlink message that is not supported by the
implemented message set, then the free text uplink message “MESSAGE NOT
SUPPORTED BY THIS FACILITY” will be sent rather than terminating the
connection.

s. ATC Comm Message Handling

t. Whenever practical, all CPDLC messages received shall be read and reviewed by
all crewmembers using the following procedures: Upon receipt of an ATC data link
message, each crewmember should read the message silently. The PM then should
read the message aloud while the other crewmember(s) follows along. The crew
should agree on the meaning/intent of the ATC message. A proper response shall
be agreed upon prior to a response being sent to ATC.

u. Route clearance amendments by Air Traffic Service Units

v. If you receive an uplink to amend your route clearance, select REVIEW at 2R from
the ATC UPLINK message.
w. From the ATC FPL REVIEW page, select ATC CLEARANCE at 1R.
x. Review the ATC clearance on the ATC CLEARANCE page(s). Once reviewed.
Select FPL REVIEW at 6R from the last ATC CLEARANCE page. On the ATC
FPL REVIEW pages, review the uplinked loadable flight plan and compare to the
ATC clearance.
y. If you agree with the clearance, select ATC UPLINK at 6L, and select ACCEPT at
3R on the ATC UPLINK page. If you disagree with the route clearance, select
REJECT at 3L, select a reason on the VERIFY RESPONSE page, and select SEND
6R.
z. After accepting, from the VERIFY RESPONSE page, verify the WILCO response
and select SEND at 6R.
aa. After review and acceptance of the ATC route clearance, the flight plan must be
activated. From the “ACCEPTED” ATC UPLINK page, select REVIEW at 2R.
On the ATC FPL REVIEW page, select ACTIVATE at 6R. Confirm replacing the
active flight plan by selecting YES at 6R to load the uplinked flight plan.
bb. Verify that the uplinked flight plan has loaded correctly and that the proper
FROM/TO waypoints are correct.

cc. CPDLC use for Weather Deviation

dd. Priority is given to aircraft appending" DUE TO WEATHER "to requests.
ee. Priority is also given to messages using "REQUEST WEATHER DEVIATION".

ff. Data link Failure Procedures - CPDLC connection failure

gg. Establish communications on the backup voice frequency.
hh. Continue via voice until CPDLC service is re-established by the appropriate ATSU.
ii. In the event of an ADS only system failure, resume waypoint position reporting via
the POS REPORT page until ADS services are re-established.

jj. Displacement from Track

kk. If deviating in HDG mode off of the FMS active flight plan, ensure sequencing of
the active waypoint so the ADS position reports show the correct A/C track.

ll. Confirmation of Emergency ADS activation

mm. When the ADS-C emergency mode is activated without a CPDLC emergency
message or voice confirmation, and the demand contract report appears to indicate
that the aircraft is maintaining normal operations (e.g. the aircraft is not in descent
or involved in abrupt maneuvers), the aircraft may be subject to unlawful
interference.
nn. To check for covert or inadvertent activation of the ADS-C emergency mode the
free text uplink “Confirm ADS” shall be appended to a “Confirm Speed” data or
voice request:
oo. Controller: CONFIRM SPEED CONFIRM ADS
pp. The crew shall then check the status of the aircraft’s ADS Emergency Mode and if
the emergency mode has been activated inadvertently, the pilot shall select ADS
Emergency Mode to “OFF” and advise ATC by voice or the following CPDLC free
text downlink.
qq. Pilot: ADS RESET
rr. If the aircraft continues with the ADS emergency mode activated ATC shall assume
the aircraft is in emergency conditions and follow normal alerting procedures.

ss. ATC Comm and ADS Termination

tt. Data Link services should be terminated as the aircraft exits the last supporting
ATSU. You may receive the uplink message, “CONTACT [ICAO Facility name]
on [Frequency].” Most ATSUs will automatically terminate the CPDLC and ADS
connections as you exit their FIR for domestic ATC services. If the connections
are not automatically terminated, then select ATC COMM OFF and ADS OFF.

8. DIALING SATCOM SHORT-CODES:

Currently SATCOM may be used in any emergency or non-routine situation. An
unforeseen inability to communicate via HF constitutes a non-routine situation.
