What is the Parable of
Talents?

REED 2
Mathew 25:14-30
Jesus tells the story of a rich man who has three slaves. He gives each slave an
amount of money, referred to as talents and possibly talents of gold, based
upon that man's ability to steward and care for the money. The first steward is
given 5 talents, the second is given two talents and the third is given one. The
master told them to care for his money and the first two servants used the
talents to trade and gain profit. They returned to their master with double the
talents! The third servant was fearful and hid the one talent he was trusted
with, returning just one talent to his master. The master scolded him saying
that he should have invested the money and received interest.

REED 2
Why is it important?

REED 2
Then you ought to have invested my money
with the bankers, and at my coming I
should have received what was my own
with interest.
Mathew 25:27

REED 2
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and
faithful servant. You have been faithful over
a little; I will set you over much. Enter into
the joy of your master.’
Mathew 25:23

REED 2
Relevance
In Mathew 25:14-30, Jesus uses the Parable of the Talents to help us
understand our calling as Christians and our responsibility to use what God
The Parable of Talents
has given us to bring Him glory and honor
The servant who received one talent was not condemned for failing to reach Mathew 25:14-30
the five-talent goal; he was condemned because he did nothing with what he
was given. The gifts we receive from God include skills, abilities, family
connections, social positions, education, experiences, and more. The point of
the parable is that we are to use whatever we have been given for God’s
purposes. The severe consequences to the unproductive servant, far beyond
anything triggered by mere business mediocrity, tell us that we are to invest
our lives, not waste them.
