Our DC Super Senior Says:

This course educates us on the role of microorganisms in the ecosystem and the
applications of microbiology to natural and engineered systems. It also imparts general
ideas of how these tiny organisms help treat wastewater and solid waste generated
from human activities.
There were many real-world engineering problems that we had to solve in this course
and this has further honed my analytical thinking skills. I have also gained a lot of

the environment, as well as the evaluation of air quality and air pollutants’ emission using
engineering approaches. I have learnt to apply the appropriate engineering methods to tackle
air pollution and evaluate the performance of air pollution control equipment.
One of the highlights of this course was to work in groups to design a project which mimics
air pollution in real-world situations and to provide relevant solutions. This group project has
enabled me to develop problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills.
Hew Gong Qi In summary, this course unequivocally prepares and equips students with knowledge and

activities of the maritime framework and the quality concepts, and the environmental issues
industry and the difficulties working environments practical applications in that the shipping industry is
of having to operate in the in the shipping industry shipping industry faced with, and the measures

tackle the issues

What skills will I develop? Expertise Gained

• Ship Management
• Environmental/Quality Auditing
• Environmental Regulatory
Framework for Shipping
COMMUNICATION PROBLEM-SOLVING TRANSDISCIPLINARY THINKING

This course introduces the legal requirements involved Our DC Super Senior Says:
in operating a shipping company. It focuses mainly on
environmental protection regulations that ships must comply with to operate internationally.
We also learnt about the legal mechanisms in place, such as the concept of international
conventions. The contents of this course are very real, current and applicable to industry
practices, making it an interesting course to explore.

Fazwin Bin Amir In my honest opinion, this course sets a core foundation for how the international seaborne
Class of trade actually works. Being a tanker operator myself, I cannot stress how relevant the concepts
2020 explored in this course have been influential to the decisions I make at work.

CORE PORT ECONOMICS

What will I learn?
Examine and understand the economic Appreciate the concepts and industry Gain insights into how the port industry
aspects of the port industry practice in port economics functions

What skills will I develop? Expertise Gained

• Port-related concepts/theories in
the context of International Trade
and Economic Development
• Port Management (pricing,
COMMUNICATION DECISION MAKING PROBLEM-SOLVING productivity, operations, etc.)

‘Port Economics’ opened my eyes to what goes on

Our DC Super Senior Says:
behind the scenes of an international port. I have learnt
how the activities in a port are organised, such as the operation of cranes and trucks that
work around the clock to keep the cargoes moving. I also learnt about how port authorities
and operators make decisions to remain competitive to attract port users. Most importantly,
a port is not simply a place where ships are loaded and unloaded with cargoes. It is crucial for
generating revenue for a country and providing jobs for its people.
This course has helped to hone my analytical skills as I have learnt how to deconstruct decisions
of a port operator into bite sizes to make conclusions. I believe that this course is useful for
Leong maritime professionals because the port industry intertwines with the other sectors of the
Shao Jun maritime industry. Understanding the operations, management and economics decisions in the
Year 4 port industry will allow us to excel in our careers as maritime professionals.
