BIOGRAPHY
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was
born in Boston, the son of two actors who
died before his third birthday. He was
raised in the United States and England by
John Allan, with whom he had a troubled
relationship. Poe’s adult life was difficult,
too. He earned only a meager living from
his writings. Still, during his short life he
wrote poems and stories that have made
him one of the best-known American
“This is the picture of Edgar Allan Poe” authors. A critic has called his verse “easy
but unforgettable”

(The teacher will show them the picture of

the author)

Annabel Lee
By: Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea.
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;--
5
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

She was a child and I was a child

In this kingdom by the sea.
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
10
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,
15
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
20
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me;--
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
25
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
30
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

4) Discussion
“This poem is an example of what kind of
“It is an example of a narrative poetry”
poetry?

“Correct. It is a narrative poetry, a poetry that

tells a story. Narrative poems have a special
appeal. They present dramatic events vividly,
using some of the elements as short stories such as
plot, characters and even dialogue.
a) Recalling
“Where do the events in this poem take place?”
“At what stage of life was the narrator when he
“In a kingdom by the sea”
fell in love?”
“At a young age or when they were kids”
“What cause Annabel Lee’s death?”

“She was chilled to death. The jealousy of

the angels was the reason why a wind
came down from a cloud and killed her”

“Why can neither the angels nor the demons

separate the narrator’s soul from that of Annabel
Lee?”
“Because they love each other so much that
“What does the narrator do all the night tide?” even death could not separate them”

b) Interpreting “The narrator lies down beside the coffin of

“How can a love be more than love?” Annabel Lee by the side of the sea”

“When you love with a love that was more

than love. Even death couldn’t be a
“How would you describe the love between the hindrance and that’s what they call eternal
narrator and Annabel Lee?” love”
“What can you say about the narrator’s mood?” “Their love was special and intense, even
though they were so young”
c) Applying “The narrator feels nostalgic. There is
“The poet Countee Cullen once wrote, “Never longing and sadness in his voice”
love with all your heart. It only ends in aching.”
What does he mean by this?”
“It means, you don’t have to love too
selflessly. You still have to preserve some
for your own self in order not to suffer
“Do you think the narrator would agree? Why or unbearable pain in the end”
why not?”
“No, he won’t. Because for him love is
d) Literature Analysis never selfish”
“What have you noticed in the poem?”

“Not including the title, how many times does the “Some of the lines are repeated several
name Annabel Lee appear in the poem?” times”
“What line in the first stanza is repeated almost “It appeared 7 times”
exactly in the next three stanzas?”
“The line in the kingdom by the sea”
“Which adjective describing Annabel Lee is
repeated 3 times in the poem?”

“Why do you think the writer repeats the name

“beautiful”
“Annabel Lee” so many times?”

“Because she’s the title character, and she’s

the reason the poem exists.”
IV. Generalization
“Based on the poem presented, define repetition”

“What are its purposes?” “Repetition is the use of a word or group of

words more than once.

“It creates a variety of effects such as

excitement, peacefulness and even
e) Infusion of Values suspense. It is used for emphasis.
There are many ways to show how you love
someone. There are those who gave their life as
proof of their undeniable love like famous heroes
who fought for our freedom. If you are Dr. Jose
Rizal, will you give your life also for our country’s (Student’s answers may vary)
welfare? As a student, how will you be able to
show your love to your fellowmen, to the country
as a whole and to your family?

V. Evaluation
“As an evaluation, I would like you to have a
5-minute dramatization of the poem. Count off
from 1 to 5 and form your group. I will give you
ten minutes to prepare. Use some parts of the
poem for the script. Use repetition. I will grade
each group using the following criteria.
