CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Grozev VH. & Easterbrook MJ. (2022) the experience of students who

work while they study at university, with a focus on any practical and/or identity

incompatibilities that the students reported between the domains of work and study, and

work and social life, and any strategies they used to reduce or resolve these

incompatibilities. Students experienced competing demands of combining work and

study – such as reduction of cognitive capacities and lack of time – which caused them

to experience the domains of work and study as practically incompatible. The

experience of practical incompatibility adversely affected their ability to submit written

work on time, was stressful, and, in extreme cases, caused them to drop out of

university. Similarly, the negative outcomes of combining work and social life – such as

tiredness and having no time to see friends - caused employed students to experience

the domains of work and social life as practically incompatible.

Based on the study of Abenoja, Accion, Aguilar, et al., (2019) that being a

working student is truly hard and it comes with great responsibility. This gives them a

sense of being responsible for their actions and choices. Students also get a lot of

experiences and ideas while working which can help them improve their personal life

and enrich their problem-solving skills. Working alongside studying also helps the

students to know the positive and negative impact of working while studying, how to

surpass the problems they encounter and realize how hard it is to gain money.

Commitment, discipline, and time management are essential when working while
studying. On the other hand according to Dimitri Anthony Rockman (2021), The

investigation found that the most important skill to possess when simultaneously

working and studying is effective time management, while motivation plays an equally

crucial role by fueling students’ commitment and desire to achieve academic and

professional success. Overall, the results or outcome of the study suggest that

motivation and time management might be positively related or correlated among

working students. The proposed coping mechanism model, which combines effective

time management with strong motivation and goal setting, can be used to guide and

assist working students as they navigate the demands of joint working and studying.

Based on the study of Pedroso, et al., (2022). Additionally, based on the study of

Reuinto & Muico (2022) The analyzed data revealed that working students experience

various benefits from their affiliation to a job while studying despite the pandemic. It

includes the self-development and financial opportunities that drive their motivation.

First, they obtain opportunities for development where they enhance their time

management, confidence, decision-making, multitasking, and communication skills.

Study shows that working students gain better skills such as time management and

confidence in their work and university.

This means that working

student's academic
performance is moderately
affected in terms of school
activities,
exams, and research. To cope
with this problem the
following
recommendations were
suggested. First, working
students should
practice time management to
meet the demands of work and
school.
Second, a program should be
instituted to address this issue
on
academic performance of
working students. The program
can focus on
improving the indicators that
got the lowest descriptive level.
