What’s New

Read and understand well!

Embodying Solidarity

Solidarity is a bond that unites us with other people, with the country,
with the world, and with nature. Being in harmony with all of them makes
life meaningful and blissful. In the face of struggles and conflicts, people
reach out to their fellows in search of resolution. In the process, we learn to
value friendship near and far; we learn to appreciate what nature offers; and
we learn to preserve the treasures of the world.

1. With the given paragraph, how is the term “Solidarity” defined and
developed? Explain briefly.

Mother Nature (sometimes known as Mother Earth or the Earth-

Mother) is a common personification of nature that focuses on the life-giving
and nurturing aspects of nature by embodying it in the form of the mother.
Images of women representing Mother Earth and Mother Nature are
timeless. In prehistoric times, goddesses were worshipped for their
association with fertility, fecundity, and agricultural bounty. Priestesses
held dominion over aspects of Incan. Algonquian, Assyrian, Babylonian,
Slavonic, Germanic, Roman, Greek, Indian, and Iroquoian religions in the
millennia prior to the inception of patriarchal religions.

2. Technically, what type of definition is used in paragraph 2? How did

you know? Explain shortly.

3. How about the following poem? How did the author convey the
message? What is his way of developing his poem?

What Is It
What is it that you know about operational and technical definitions?

To begin with, the operational definition is different from the

dictionary definition, must be valid, which implies that it should measure
what it is supposed to measure. Hypothesis: Informed speculation, which is
set up to be tested. What is the difference between conceptual and
operational definitions? A conceptual definition tells you what the concept
means, while an operational definition is a description of something in terms
of the operations (procedures, actions, or processes) by which it could be
observed and measured. For example, the operational definition of anxiety
could be in terms of a test score, withdrawal from a situation, or activation
of the sympathetic nervous system.

Operationalize means to put into operation or use. Operational

definitions are also used to define system states in terms of a specific,
publicly accessible process.

Q: How to write operational definition of terms?

Operational definition of terms refers to a detailed explanation of the

technical terms and measurements used during data collection. This is done
to standardize the data. Whenever data is being collected, it is necessary to
clearly define how to collect the data. Data that is not defined runs the risk of
being inconsistent and might not give the same results when the study is
replicated. Often we assume that those collecting the data understand what to
do and how to complete the task. However, people may have differing views
and interpretations of the same thing, and this will affect the data collection.
The only way to ensure that the data is consistent is by means of a detailed
operational definition of terms.

The operational definition looks like this: "weight refers to the

numbers that appear when an object is placed on a weighing scale."
The definition of term is included in the Methods section. For example, an
example of operational definition of the term "weight" of an object would be
something like this: "weight refers to the numbers that appear when an
object is placed on a weighing scale.

6
Including definitions in technical writing helps improve
comprehension of the document.( Refer to the video which explains the three main types
of definitions in technical documents and provides examples of how to write the
definitions.)

Definitions in Technical Writing

My first science class in college was a blur. As soon as the professor
began speaking, words flew out of his mouth that I had never heard before.
To understand what he was saying, I would have had to look up every other
word in the dictionary. I knew I couldn't keep up, so I dropped the class and
majored in English.
If the students can't comprehend the information being disseminated,
can learning really take place? This is a question we must ask ourselves
about our writing. If what we write contains words the readers can't
understand, can the reader really comprehend the information in the
document? The answer is no, so it's our job as writers to make sure that we
provide definitions for words that can potentially be difficult for our
audience to understand.
There are three types of definitions commonly used in technical writing:

 Parenthetical definitions
 Sentence definitions
 Extended definitions

The type of definition you choose for your document will depend on the word
being defined and the overall purpose of the document.

*Parenthetical Definitions

A parenthetical statement is one that explains or qualifies something.

You can call such a statement a parenthetical, (especially when it's in
parentheses). Just like words in parentheses (like these words) add clarity to
a sentence, parenthetical words in speech help make something clearer or give
extra information.

Examples:
1. Aniline, a benzene ring with an amine group, is a versatile chemical
used in many organic syntheses.
2. The genus Helogale (dwarf mongooses) contains two species. Note: It
is parenthetical because the author uses parenthesis inclosing
words: dwarf mongooses.

7
Another example:

1. The government has passed Republic Act 9710 (Magna Carta for
Women) to affirm the role of women in nation building and to ensure the
substantive equality of women and men. Republic Act 9710(Magna
Carta for Women) is an example of parenthetical definition.

What is defined in this sentence? How is it defined?

2. “Discrimination Against Women” refers to any gender-based distinction,

exclusion or restriction which has the effect of purpose of impairing or
nullifying the recognition of enjoyment or exercise by women,
irrespective of their marital status, on the basis of equality of men and
women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political,
economic, social, cultural, civil, or any other field.
http://www.chanrobles.com/republicacts/republicno9710.php
“Discrimination Against Women” is technically defined using the website
as source. http://www.chanrobles.com/republicacts/republicno9710.php

3. As defined in Republic Act 7610, Child Abuse refers to the maltreatment, whether
habitual or not, of the child.
http://www.lawphil.net/statutes/repacts/ra_7610_1992.html

As defined in Republic 7610, child abuse refers to the maltreatment, whether

habitual or not, of the child is defined technically.

*Sentence Definitions

Sentence Definition is a set of words that is complete in itself, typically

containing subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question,
exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause and sometimes
one or more subordinate clauses
There are times when a few words are not enough to explain a
technical term. In this case, the definition provided needs to be more
extensive. Sentence definitions can provide the additional information needed
to help increase comprehension.

8
Sentence definitions are an explanation of a word using one sentence.
These are more formal explanations than parenthetical definitions. Sentence
definitions follow a similar form, which includes:

 The word being defined

 The class to which the word belongs
 The feature that distinguish the term from other words

For example, 'The heart is an organ that pumps blood through the
body.' Notice that the word being defined is provided first (heart), then the
word is put into a class or category (organ), and finally, distinguishing
features are explained (pumps blood).
Here are some other examples of sentence definitions:

 A pig is an animal that rolls in the mud.

 Scissors are an instrument that is used to cut items, such as paper.
 A hoyden is a girl who is boisterous and bold.
 A kickshaw is food served as an appetizer and is usually a delicacy.

Keeping the word-class-distinguishing feature format allows the

readers to compare the word to terms they may already know, while also
understanding how it differs from those words, which improves
comprehension.
These definitions generally appear in three different places: within the
text, in margin notes, or in a glossary. Regardless of position in the
document, most sentence definitions follow the basic form of term, category,
and distinguishing features.

Examples:

A major scale is a diatonic scale which has the semitone interval pattern
2-2-1-2-2-2-1.
 term: major scale
 category: diatonic scales
 distinguishing features: semitone interval pattern 2-2-1-2-2- 2-1
In mathematics, an abelian group is a group which is commutative.
 term: abelian group
 category: mathematical group
 distinguishing features: commutative

9
Extended Definitions
Although sentence definitions provide more specific details to define a
word, there are times in technical writing when the term is so important to
the document or so complex in its meaning that an entire paragraph or
more is needed to help explain the term. This is when an extended definition
is necessary.
Extended definitions are the use of a paragraph or more to expand on
a word that may be difficult to comprehend. An extended definition almost
always starts with a sentence definition, but then expands on the word by
providing additional sentences about one or more of the following:

 The function of the term

 The location of the term
 The physical traits of the term
 The causes and effects of the term

An extended definition is a one or more paragraphs that attempt to

explain a complex term. "An extended definition may explain the word's
etymology or historical roots, describe sensory characteristics of something
(how it looks, feels, sounds, tastes, smells), identify its parts, indicate how
something is used, explain what it is not, provide an example of it, and/or
note similarities or differences between.

When a term needs to be explained in great detail and precision, an

extended definition is used. They can range in size from a few sentences to
many pages. Shorter ones are usually found in the text, and lengthy
definitions are placed in a glossary. Relatively complex concepts in
mathematics require extended definitions in which mathematical objects are
declared (e.g., let x be a real number...) and then restricted by conditions
(often signaled by the phrase such that).

Let's look at this example of definition: How is this defined?

For example:
Aggressive driving is a phenomenon, which has only recently got the
public worried. The National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSC)
defines aggressive driving as the “operation of a motor vehicle in a manner
that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property. ”Actions such as
running red lights, improper passing, overtaking on the left, improper lane
change, failing to yield improper turns, running stop signs, tailgating,
careless driving, and speeding are examples of aggressive driving. Such
actions are dangerous to other road users. Aggressive driving should be
avoided because of crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

1
A technical definition is a definition in technical communication
describing or explaining technical terminology. Technical definitions are
used to introduce the vocabulary which makes communication in a
particular field succinct and unambiguous. For example, the iliac crest
from medical terminology is the top ridge of the hip bone (see ilium).

What is the difference between technical an operational definition?

Technical vs. Operational Definition

Technical definition mostly refers to the aspect of explaining or

describing any technical terms or terminology. Technical definitions could
be used in expanding the vocabulary since most of these terms are
explained in the exact manner. Examples include the terms and definitions
of the words found in dictionary.

Operational definition, on the other hand, is more on the

application of the word. For example, these may include the various attempts
to define or explain a certain process and its properties including but not
limited to the characteristics of the event itself.

For example, the technical definition of a computer is a device or machine

used in performing, assessing, evaluation and following commands set by the users. The
operational definition of a computer is something used in doing homeworks or
browsing the internet.

Task 4: FROM COVER TO COVER

How would you embody harmony in times of struggles and

conflicts?

The friendship featured in the “The Three Musketeers” among four

young gentlemen devoted to the king. Their friendship allows them to
combine forces and defeat evil powers that might otherwise prevail.
Friendship is thus portrayed in an immensely light in the story they are
always there and share and support each other.

THE THREE MUSKETTERS

Summary
D’Artagnan Seeks His Fortune

In April 1625, a young man from Gascony, fiery-tempered and

intelligent, arrives in Meung – a small French town. The young
man, d’Artagnan, has left home to seek his fortune in Paris, carrying a letter
of introduction to the famed leader of the king’s Musketeers and King Louis
XIII’s right-hand man, M. de Treville – a fellow Gascon. At a tavern,
d’Artagnan overhears a gentleman mocking the traveler’s steed. The proud
young man immediately picks a fight and ends up soundly beaten by the
man’s accomplices. Later, d’Artagnan spies the stranger outside the window,
speaking with a beautiful blonde woman in a carriage, a woman whom he
calls Milady. The next morning, he realizes his letter to M. de Treville is
missing. The host confesses that the stranger stole the letter. Undaunted,
d’Artagnan continues on to Paris.

The king’s Musketeers are a rowdy lot, who love nothing more than
annoying their counterparts: the cardinal’s Guards. D’Artagnan watches two
Musketeers – a tall, loud, flamboyantly-dressed fellow named Porthos and a
stout, delicately featured man, Aramis, who aspires to a position in the
Church – bickering, before d’Artagnan was taken to meet M. de Treville. M.
de Treville calls out for three of his Musketeers. Two of the trio, Aramis and
Porthos appear. M. de Treville scolds the men for losing a recent fight with
the cardinal’s Guards. As the pair protest, Athos – a noble-looking, slightly
older man – appears, pale from a wound he received in the fight. Suddenly,
he collapses.

1
Three Duels

Once a doctor is called for Athos, d’Artagnan is at last able to tell M.

de Treville about himself. Though M. de Treville is sympathetic to
d’Artagnan, he worries that d’Artagnan might be working for the cardinal, a
high ecclesiastical official of the Roman Catholic Church who ranks next
below the pope and is appointed by him to assist him as a member of the
college of cardinals. He tests him by praising the cardinal, betting that an
enemy would mock the so-called Red Duke. To M. de Treville’s surprise,
d’Artagnan states that his father taught him that the cardinal was worthy of
his respect. Pleased, but still cautious, M. de Treville offers to help
d’Artagnan obtain a place at the Royal Academy. Before M. de Treville can
compose the letter, however, d’Artagnan spies the thief from Meung outside
and runs out the door to catch him.

In his flight, d’Artagnan inadvertently crashes into Athos, freshly

released from the doctor’s care. When Athos takes him to task, d’Artagnan’s
pride rears its head, and he sets a duel at noon to settle the matter.
D’Artagnan next knocks into Porthos, who calls him “blind,” and d’Artagnan
retorts by mocking Porthos’s new sword belt. The two set a duel for one
o’clock. Once on the street, d’Artagnan spots Aramis chatting with two other
Musketeers. Seeing a handkerchief on the ground near Aramis’s foot,
d’Artagnan picks it up and tries to return it. The other Musketeers tease
Aramis about the handkerchief’s owner. Afterward, Aramis upbraids
d’Artagnan for his lack of gallantry, and the pair make an appointment to
duel that day two o’clock

All for one, and one for all.

Task 5: Relative Pronoun

From the selection, “The Three Musketeers” analyze how relative

pronouns are used. A relative pronoun is a pronoun that heads an
adjective clause. The relative pronouns are "that," "which," "who," "whom,"
and "whose." Here are some simple examples: That. The dog that stole the
pie is back. A relative pronoun is a word that introduces a dependent
(or relative) clause and connects it to an independent clause. Like
adjectives, these clauses in some way describe that subject. Relative
pronouns, like conjunctions, are words that join clauses—in this case,
a relative clause to its main clause.

More Example: D’Artagnan glances out the window and, by accident, sees a
person who robbed him.

1
I. Directions: Complete the definition of the given terms using the
relative pronouns like who, which, where.
Example: Comets are space objects which orbit the sun.

1) Streptomycin is an antibiotic

.
2) A pharmacist is a person

3) The brain is the part of the vertebrate

.
4) An omen is an event or phenomenon

.
5) A library is a place

6) In the selection, “The Three Musketeers” complete the following:

The host confesses that .

What I Have Learned

Directions: Fill in the correct words or ideas and concepts you’ve learned
from the discussion in (What Is It part) by completing each blank provided
below.

1. I have learned that operational definition is more on the

4. Sentence definitions can provide the additional information needed

to help .

5. Extended or expanded definitions are the use of a paragraph or

more to that may be difficult to .

1
What I Can Do
Task 6: Developing a paragraph by definition. You can choose either
operational or technical definition.

We all know that we have different types of paragraph development.

Some are: developing a paragraph by giving details, developing a paragraph
by comparison and contrast, giving examples and others, however when
meaning is given importance, a writer usually defines the term, so a
paragraph can be developed by definition.

Examples:
# 1.
YOUTH is the period between childhood and matURITy the time of
life when one is yoUNg, and the early period of existence, growth or
development.

Note: (Number 1 is defined technically for the 3erm and definitions are found
or taken from the dictionary which describe or explain technical terminology.)

#2.
YoUTh then is a boy or a girl laUGhing and crying on the face of the earth.
It’s bicycle and bUS rides and hitchhiking and reckless, aimless wandering.
It’s a robUSt boy drinking the sweet water of this earth, HUGging the
sweetness of life, lamenting nothing becaUSe life for yoUth is more laUGhter,
while heartaches and real sorrows and responsibilities belong to another
age, another time, another season.

Note: (Number 2 is defined operationally for the term is applied or used to

explain a certain process and its properties including but not limited to the
characteristics of the event itself.)

How do you think is the following paragraph developed?

Hobbies are a popular form of relaxation and a source of pleasure.

Almost everyone has some kind of hobby. A hobbyist may collect stamps,
coins, shells, dolls, autograph, butterflies, tapes or other thing he or she
enjoys collecting. Or a hobbyist might take pleasure in making model
