to your research.

Student / Participant to Complete

Name: Andrew Kim

Regional Symposium: Virtual

Preventing Waterborne Infection and Pulmonary Disease in War-Torn Regions Using
Moonflower Extract
Title of Paper:

1. Please explain your role in the development of the project idea.

I first took the initiative of setting the topic and main goal of the project: to find a local
treatment and therefore prevent possible arising diseases from war in Ukraine. From there
I mapped out a possible way to analyze specific plants or organisms and their properties. I
got assistance from my mentor in terms of the logistics and feasibility of certain parts of my
plan, and revised it into a solid map of the study.

2. What steps led you to formulate your research question?

– or – What steps led you to develop the design for your project?
Combined with my prior interest for infectious diseases and the recent COVID-19
pandemic, I felt that it was important, especially, for countries in less stable conditions to be
well prepared for certain spread of diseases. One such region was Ukraine due to its
current war, and it was most important to find a local treatment to the rising pulmonary
diseases in those conditions. Specifically, the Evening primrose plant was of interest as it
was a local plant in Ukraine known for certain physiological properties beforehand.
Therefore, the research question was created: how can Evening primrose be used as a
local treatment for pulmonary diseases in war-torn areas?

3. Where did you conduct the major part of your work?

(e.g., home, school, or other institutional setting – university lab, medical center, etc.)
A lab within an institution named Genuine Research.

4. Describe the assistance that you received throughout the project.
First, I was provided with assistance in terms of safety protocols when using the
instruments in the lab. Also, though many of the equipment and materials for the project
were already in the lab, my mentor provided me with the acquiring of certain bacteria
and cell cultures available in my region. Finally, my mentor also aided me with wording
certain phrases when writing my research paper in order to prevent confusion and make
sure that the paper is of high quality.

5. If you worked in an institutional setting, describe your role on the team.

6. What role did each person play in the research investigation?

N/A

7. Describe what parts of the research you did on your own and what parts where you received
help. (e.g., literature search, hypothesis, experimental design, use of special equipment, gathering data,
evaluation of data, statistical analysis, conclusions, and preparation of written report (abstract and/or paper))
Parts that were done individually included literature search, hypothesis, gathering data,
evaluation of data, conclusions, and most of the written paper. I did receive help on some
more search of literature and previous studies, as well as the experimental design and use
of special equipment. I also received some help in the preparation of the written report, but
mostly in wording and conveying information rather than my mentor directly writing the
paper with me.
