Agnes Arellano
is a Philippine sculptor known for her
surrealistic sculptural groupings.
A family tragedy that occurred in 1981
determined the course of her career and
the major themes in her art. Her
parents, her sister Citas and a
housemaid were killed in a fire that
razed the Arellanos’ ancestral home in
San Juan, Metro Manila. Arellano
received news of the fire while she was
on holiday in Spain. In memory of her
late parents and sister, she decided to
set up the nonprofit Pinaglabanan
Galleries on the site of the ancestral
home.
Many unusual Philippine and foreign
artworks were to be exhibited
there, and talented artists were
also given subsidies.
Arellano commemorated the tragic
death of her parents and sister 7
years later with a multimedia event
called Fire and Death—A Labyrinth
of Ritual Art. She created a unique
installation consisting of a labyrinth
of thematic shrines in the Arellano
garden, combining sculptures,
poetry, photographs, sound
sculptures, plants, and family
memorabilia. This demonstrated the
deep sense of the precarious
balance between death and life that
she had become conscious of after
the tragedy. This theme would find
its way into many of her other works
as well.

julie lluch
Julie Lluch is one of the foremost
exponents of terracotta in the Philippines
today. Her highly personal art finds
perfect expression in Philippine indigenous
clay to which she refers as a most
“sensuous and pleasurable” feminine
medium. Her ideologically informed works
of sculptured women performing various
domestic chores, mostly auto-biographical
in origin, are sharp feminist commentary on
the circumstances of women’s lives. Her
later works deal with spiritual themes,
particularly the Christian paradox of death
and rebirth, faith and vulnerability as
depicted in her praying women series.
At the forefront of the
national women’s movement in
the area of culture and the
arts, Julie helped form the
feminist group Katipunan ng
Kababaihan para sa Kalayaan
(KALAYAAN) together with
women writers, activists and
intellectuals in 1983. In 1990,
she co-founded KASIBULAN
with four other woman
artists, an organization
originally for visual artists
and which today claims largest
membership of Filipino women
artists including writers,
theater workers and
filmmakers.

National Artists
of the
Philippines
 The Order of National Artists has been
established by virtue of the Presidential Proclamation No. 1001’s
1972 and aims to give
appropriate recognition and prestige to Filipinos who have
distinguished themselves and
made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and letters. It
is the highest award
conferred by the President of the Philippines to the nation’s
artists. The categories for
the Order of National Artists are music, dance, theatre, visual
arts, literature, film and
broadcast arts and architecture or allied arts.
 The awarding of the Order is administered by the Order of the National Artists
Secretariat – NCCA and CCP—and is conferred by the President of the Philippines every
three years. Cultural organizations, educational institutions and private foundations
and councils may submit nominations for the Order once the Secretariat announces the
opening for nominations. The Secretariat then screens and deliberates these
nominations before submitting a list of recommended nominees to the President. After
this, the President will decide the final list of awardees and will then issue
proclamation,
conferring the rank and title on the awardees.

The Philippines also honors artist who are engaged in
folk or traditional arts and who have reached a high
level of technical skill and artistic excellence. The
award is called the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan
(GAMABA) Or National Living Treasures Award.

The categories for GAMABA are folk architecture,

maritime transport, weaving, carving, performing arts,
literature, graphic and plastic arts ornament, textile or
fiber art, pottery, and other artistic expressions of
traditional culture.

This award was institutionalized by 1992

Republic Act No. 7355, with the NCCA
in charge of its implementation. The process of
awarding a Manlilikha ng Bayan is like
that of the Order of the National Artists.
However, only NCCA’s ad hoc panel of experts
and reviewers will screen and review the
nominations. They will then, submit the list to
the President of the Philippines for
proclamation.

works of superior and distinctive quality over a significant
period.
