RUGBY HIGH SCHOOL - MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

We can use a formula triangle to help us with calculations involving speed, distance and time.

S T
Example 1

A car travels at an average speed of 50 km/h.

(i) How long will it take to travel 120 km?
Give your answer in (a) hours (b) minutes (c) hours and minutes.
(ii) What is the cars speed in m/s?

120
(i) = 2.4 (a) 2.4 hours (b) 2.4 x 60 = 144 minutes
50
(c) 0.4 x 60 = 24, so 2.4 hours = 2 hours 24 minutes

(ii) 50 km/h = 50,000 m/h

2500
= 50,000 ÷ 60 = m/min

The exchange rate is £1 = $1.34
(a) Work out how many dollars ($) Jim gets. 350 x 1.34 = 469

In the USA Rosie sees some jeans costing $67

In London the same make of jeans costs £47.50
The exchange rate is still £1 = $1.34
(b) Work out the difference between the cost of the jeans in the USA and in London.
Give your answer in pounds (£).
67 ÷ 1.34 = 50
50 − 47.5 = £2.50

Which is heavier: a kilogram of cotton wool or a kilogram of
rocks?

RUGBY HIGH SCHOOL - MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

Of course, a kilogram of rocks weighs the same as a kilogram of cotton wool –
they both weigh one kilogram!
If you thought that the rocks were heavier, you were probably thinking of their
density rather than their weight.
Density is a measure of the mass of an object per unit volume.

Density is usually measured in g/cm3 or kg/m3. It can also be measured in kg/l.

A density of 1.2 g/cm3 means that every 1 cm3 of the material has a mass of 1.2
grams.

Which is heavier: 1 cm3 of cotton wool or 1 cm3 of rock?

This is a more sensible question. Rock is denser than cotton wool and so 1 cm3 of
rock is heavier than 1 cm3 of cotton wool.

The population of Telford and Wrekin is around 166 000
What is the population density of Telford and Wrekin in m2 per person?

290500000 ÷ 16600 = 1750

Note: You can find population density in people per km2.
