Assignment I

Unit 1
1. The assembly shown in Figure 1 consists of the straight rod ABC which passes
through and is welded to the rectangular plate DEFH. The assembly rotates about the
axis AC with a constant angular velocity of 9 rad/s. Knowing that the motion when
viewed from C is anti-clockwise, determine the velocity and acceleration of the corner
F.

2. In Figure 2, a disc of 180-mm radius rotates at the constant rate ω2 = 12 rad/s with
respect to arm CD, which itself rotates at the constant rate ω1=6 rad/s about the Y axis.
At the instant shown, determine
(a) the angular velocity of the 180-mm disc
(b) the angular acceleration of the 180-mm disc
(c) the linear velocity of point A on the rim of the disc
(d) the linear acceleration of point A on the rim of the disc

3. In Figure 3, the ladder of the fire truck, rotates around the z axis with angular velocity
ω1 = 0.15 rad/s, which is increasing at rate α = 0.2 rad/s2.At the same instant it is
rotating upwards at the constant rate ω2= 1.2 rad/s. Point A is at the top of the ladder
of length L= 12 m. At the instant angle θ = 30o, determine
(a) the linear velocity of point A.
(b) the magnitude of the linear velocity of point A.
(c) the linear acceleration of point A.
(d) the magnitude of the linear acceleration of point A.

4. In Figure 4, gear A is fixed while gear B is free to rotate on the shaft S. If the shaft is
turning about the z axis with angular velocity ωz = 5 rad/s while increasing at rate αz =
2 rad/s2, determine the (a) angular velocity, (b) angular acceleration, (c) linear
velocity, and (d) linear acceleration of point C at the instant shown. The face of gear B
lies in the vertical plane. Take rA = 160 mm, rB = 80 mm, h=80 mm.

5. Rod AB in Figure 4 is connected by ball-and-socket joints to collar A and to disc BC
of radius of 0.16 m. Knowing that disc rotates anti-clockwise at the constant rate ω =7
rad/s in the zx plane (i.e. about the vertical axis), determine (a) angular velocity of AB
and linear velocity of collar A, and (b) angular acceleration of AB and linear
acceleration of collar A for the position shown.

7. Figure 4 shows a wheel of a tricycle, which consists of a thin ring of tyre and rim of
combined mass m1 =8 kg and six (6) spokes made from slender rods, each having a
mass m2 =.1.2 kg. Know that mean radius r = 0.4 m, determine the mass moment of
inertia of the wheel about an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through (a)
Centre of gravity G, and (b) Point A

8. The variable-resistance motor is often used for appliances, pumps, and blowers. By
applying a current through the stator S, an electromagnetic field is created that “pulls
in” the nearest rotor poles, as shown in Figure 8. The result of this is to create a torque
M about the bearing at A. Knowing that the rotor is a cylindrical iron core of mass
m1=3 kg, diameter d = 50 mm and eight extended slender rods, each having a mass
m2= 1 kg and length l = 100 mm, determine its mass moment of inertia about the axis
of rotation.

9. Each slender rod in Figure 9 has a mass density ϒ = 4.5 kg/m. Knowing that a = 0.60
m , b =0.30 m and c =0.45 m, determine the mass moment of the part about an axis
perpendicular to the page and pass through point A.

10. Shown in Figure 10 is the cross section of a moulded flat-belt pulley. It made from
polycarbonate inner brass bushing. If densities of the polycarbonate and brass are
1250 kg/m3 and 8650 kg/m3, respectively, determine mass moment of inertia and
radius of gyration of the pulley with respect to the axis AA'.
