Target

Putting on makeup has already been a part of our everyday routine. We put
on makeup to look more presentable and beautiful. Makeup application boost
confidence and help you to be more sociable.

From the previous lesson, you were able to learn and perform various methods
of hairstyling, like non-thermal styling, thermal styling, casual hairstyle, formal
hairstyle and creative hairstyle.

In this module, you are going to learn the fundamentals of facial makeup
application and what type of makeup should be applied to any occasion or event.

After going through this learning material, you are expected to:
LO 1. Prepare clients (TLE_HEHD9-12MU-IVa-j-1);
LO 2. Apply Make-up (TLE_HEHD9-12MU-IVa-j-2); and
LO 3. Perform post-service activities (TLE_HEHD9-12MU-IVa-j-3).

L.O. 1: PREPARE CLIENTS

Make-up is used to enhance and accentuate the facial features to make a


person more attractive, which in turn makes her feel more confident. Make-up is
used to create balance in the face by skillful application of different cosmetic
products to reduce or to emphasize facial features.

Prepare Client
1. Advise client to remove all personal accessories.
2. Consult client on specific make-up requirements.
3. Analyze shapes of face and skin type / tones of client according to make-up
requirements.
4. Seat client in a comfortable position during the entire process.
5. Provide client with protective clothing following salon procedures.

Factors in Choosing Facial Makeup


1. Shape of the Face
Oval Shape • Equal distance from the hairline to eyebrows;
from eyebrows to tip of nose and from nose to
chin; wider forehead than jaw line.

Round Shape • Width about same as length; short forehead;


wide cheeks; round chin.

Diamond • Narrow forehead; narrow chin and wider


Shape cheekbone.

Square /Rectangular Shape • Width of the cheeks and forehead are similar;
width of jawline and forehead are similar;
high cheekbones; angular overall appearance.

Heart Shape • Wide at the forehead, but then curves down
to a point at the chin

2. Type of color of the skin


• Identify the skin’s basic composition: oil, dry or
combination.
• Determine the amount of coverage needed
based on the condition of the skin.
• Find and test the perfect foundation color; it
should blend with the client’s skin tone.

3. The outfit and the occasion


Matching the makeup with the outfit is one of the most important things to
consider in making a client to look great. In choosing the clothing, make sure that it
is important in choosing the right color of makeup; it must be selected carefully so
it complements your outfit.

Facial Makeup Requirements


There are different requirements in facial makeup depending
on the occasion and time of the day. Below are some of them:

1. Ordinary of Day Makeup


• A type of make-up that is simple, light, and looks natural. The
shade should match the color of the dress. It is appropriate
for ordinary occasions, or when going to church, school or
work.

2. Evening Makeup or Heavy Makeup


• Evening or heavy make-up uses darker shades and gives glamorous effect.

3. Stage Theatrical Makeup or Creative Makeup


• This type of make-up creates a believable appearance of the characters that
actors portray during stage/ theater production.

4. Wedding Makeup
• This type of make-up is similar to photographic make-up. The face of the bride
should be glowing but looks natural in the picture.

Planning and Preparing for Makeup Application


1. Do a consultation with the client.
A. Maintain client privacy at all times.
B. Record personal details on the client record card.
C. Look for contraindications; do not provide treatment if contraindications are
present, to prevent client from harm.
D. Ask the following questions in order to determine the treatment plan:
• Does the client wear makeup normally?
• What is the occasion?
• What are the color preferences of the client?
• What is the effect that she wants to achieve using makeup?
• Does the client have known allergies to cosmetics?
E. Establish the client’s skin type in order to select appropriate skin care /
cosmetic preparation.
F. Encourage the client to ask questions.
2. Plan the makeup application.
A. Advise client on makeup treatment requirements following the consultation
and skin analysis.
B. Explain how the makeup treatment will be carried out, including:
• how long it takes; and

• what is involved in makeup application to treat the skin condition and
achieve the makeup effect.
C. Welcome any questions to ensure client understanding.
D. Select suitable skin-care and make-up products to achieve the agreed makeup
treatment plan.

Steps in Facial Makeup Application


1. Sanitize hand before actual application of make-up.
2. Select and prepare make-up products and accessories, tools, supplies and
materials according to client make – up requirement.
3. Perform make-up application in accordance with established or acceptable
procedures.
4. Check make-up result before application of finishing touches.
5. Ensure client’s comfort and safety during the entire process.

Hygiene Precautions
The main sources of infection during a makeup treatment could be:
• Infected skin;
• Dirty tools and equipment; and
• Contaminated makeup products.
A high standard of personal and treatment hygiene protects the client
against the risk of infection and builds client confidence.

Personal Hygiene
The following personal hygiene reminders that are important to protect both
the makeup artist and the client:
• Wash your hands immediately before the treatment and regularly
throughout.
• Cover any broken skin on your own hands with clean plaster.
• Wear a clean overall and protective apron.
• Make sure your hair is clean and styled so that it will not fall over your
client’s face during the makeup procedure.
• Long nails are not suitable when applying makeup.
