LEARNING PACKET 3:
FORCE AND MOTION

INTRODUCTION

Hello, children! How are you? I hope you are doing great and safe with your love ones!

In this learning packet, you will learn more about how does the force of magnets work
and observe some objects we have at home are attracted to magnets. Learning about
these will help you understand how many things work, and know the magical behind of it.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s discover it together!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this learning packet, you will be able to:

1. explain the effects of force when applied to an object;
2. characterize magnetic force; and
3.practice safety measures in physical activities and proper handling of
materials.

This learning packet answers three questions such as: What are the effects of force
on objects? What is magnetic force? What safety measures can be practiced in doing
physical activities and handling of materials? The collection of completed activities in
this lesson will be submitted at the end of the allotted period.

Look at the men in the picture above. One man is pushing the box while the other
is exerting force to stop it. What do you think will happen to the box? Will the box move?
Or will the box stay?

LESSON 12 Force Exerted by Magnets

Magnets play a significant role in our daily lives, did you know? Yes, you read
that correctly: magnets have been showing their usefulness by making challenging
tasks easier every day. Magnets are also useful in a variety of equipment you use at
home, particularly when studying. Are you interested in learning more about magnets?
This learning packet will teach you about magnets.

Please be ready for more exciting adventure. Happy learning children!

LET’S DISCOVER!
Can you figure out why these materials are attracted to a magnet? What exactly are
they made of? Why do other materials resist being attracted to a magnet?

The objects above are attracted to a magnet, because they are made up of
metals. They are also called magnetic objects. But do you have any idea about magnet?
Yes, you’re right! Magnet is an object that attracts certain metals, mainly iron and it
have invisible magnetic field and it will not attract all kinds of metals. There are also
objects that are not attracted to a magnet. Why you do think so? Correct, because they
are not made up of metal.
The following pictures below are example of non-metal objects.
Now let’s explore more and go back in the history of how magnets discovered during
ancient time. Did you know that the first magnets were observed as natural ores called
lodestones in Magnesia, an ancient city in Turkey? Yes, it was discovered that the iron ores
attract pieces of iron, nickel and other metals.

https://science4fun.info/iron/ https://en.numista.com https://www.carexcanada.ca/profile/cobalt/

Iron Nickel Cobalt

The magnetic force exerted by a magnet on a certain material can be either push
or pull. Its force is imperceptible. Magnets come in a variety of sizes and forms, but their
properties are the same. Take a look at the image below.

http://www.clipartbest.com

As can be seen, the majority of the iron content adheres to the magnet. The
strongest magnetic force of a magnet can be found at its ends. The poles are the ends of
the poles. N stands for north pole and S stands for south pole in all magnets.
There are several types of magnets those are ring magnet, bar magnet, horseshoe
magnet and rectangular magnet.

Bar Magnet Rectangular Magnet

Ring Magnet
5 Horseshoe Magnet
The force produced through space by magnets is called magnetism. The strength of
magnetism is measured through the magnetic lines of force exerted by the magnet starting
from the poles to the space around it. And the space where the magnetic lines of force
can be felt is called magnetic field. The magnetic field exist only if the magnet is present
within the space.
The following illustrations below shows the north and south poles of magnets field.

Magnetic Field
Magnetic field around a
between unlike poles
bar magnet

Magnetic Field
between like poles
https://www.kindpng.com/imgv/TRohoxR_magnetic-field-of-north-and-south-pole-png/

The magnetic lines from the poles of the magnets may be seen in the figure.
Magnetic lines from the north pole attract magnetic lines from the south pole, whereas
magnetic lines from both north poles repel one another. In a nutshell, the law of magnetism
states that dissimilar poles attract one another and like poles repel one another.

LET’S CHECK YOUR PROGRESS!

Good job Kids! I hope you got all the concepts we tackle together about how the
force of magnet works. Now, I want you to answer the following questions and write your
answer in the blanks.
1. How was the force of magnet used in the ancient times?

LESSON 13 Safety Measures in Physical Activities

Did you know that every time you move objects or do physical activities you exert
force? Yes, you are right, because when the amount of force that you exert depends on
the activity that you do or the weight of the object that you want to move. Some objects
you move has much weight that need more force in order to move it. And also, there
some physical activities that require more force to be done quickly. In this lesson, you will
learn the important safety measures that you need to be observed to protect yourself
from injuries when doing physical activities.

LET’S DISCOVER!
You have learned that when something is pushed or pulled, it moves. Now let us try
to discover more about how you exert force in doing your physical activities and what
appropriate wear attire and gear you should wear in doing physical activities as well as
when handling materials and especially in playing sport and outdoor games with your
playmates.

But before that I want you to examine the following pictures below. And I want you
to describe what each child is doing in the picture.

https://www.istockphoto.com https://www.shutterstock.com

Most kids like your age love spending time outside with their peers. Bike rides,
basketball games, and jogging are some of your favorite pastimes. You also assist with
domestic tasks such as cleaning, watering plants, and car washing. You can feel forces at
work while participating in these physical exercises.

You always move things around by pushing or pulling them in every physical action
you conduct, such as cleaning different parts of the house. Lifting big objects, such as the
box carrying the boy in the image above, requires greater force to counteract the force of
gravity operating on it. Because there is friction between the floor and the heavy object,
you will require a lot of force to move it.

When you're playing outside, you can always fall to the ground or hit a part of your
body against a hard or rough surface, resulting in bruises or scrapes. You risk more serious
injuries if you do not follow some safety precautions.

https://www.istockphoto.com

Here are some safety measures that you should observe when doing physical
activities as well as when handling materials.

1. Wear attire and gear that are appropriate for the sport or outdoor game that you are
playing. The attire and gear should also fit your body.

https://www.vecteezy.com/vector-art https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.pinterest. https://www.vector4free.com

2. Wear a properly fitting bike helmet when you go biking to protect your head from
injuries.

https://www.vecteezy.com/vector-art

3. Observe the weight, size, and shape of the object carefully before pushing, pulling,
or lifting.
Study the appropriate body posture when lifting objects.

https://www.freepik.com/premium-vector

4. Store combustible materials separately from the flammable chemicals.

9
https://safetystoragesystems.co.uk/product/flammable-cabinet/
LET’S CHECK YOUR PROGRESS!
Try to check your understanding by coloring the red if the situation shows
practicing safety measures. If not color the blue.

1. Always wear a helmet and safety gears when driving a motorcycle.

2. Playing volleyball without wearing proper attire.
3. Always use a dry potholder when handling hot pots.
4. Carefully pick up the larger pieces of broken glass that you can see.
5. Store the food with chemicals in one cabinet or storage area.
6. Turn off the gas stove after cooking.
7. Not wearing a face mask when going outside.
8. Crossing the pedestrian line while the traffic lights are color red.
9. Unplug the iron after using it.
10. Carefully cut the vegetables using a knife.

LET’S WRAP UP!

Try to assess yourself to know if you have learned something about the lesson on how
does the force of magnets work? All you need to do is to guess the object to supply the
missing word in the given sentence. You can choose the object from the box.
“Guess the Object”
