STORAGE STABILITY
Hordaphos® 145 must be stored in tightly closed original containers away from direct
sunlight.
Maximum storage time is 1 year.
Recommended storage temperature: 5 - 40 °C
At temperatures below 20 °C the product becomes turbid and tends to form
sedimentations after prolonged storage. In case of the product becoming opaque,
thickening or being frozen due to the effects of cold, it has to be slowly warmed up to
approx. 40 °C and homogenized. After a short stirring time the product is once again
ready for use.
APPLICATION
Hordaphos® 145 can be used as an EP*-/anti wear additive in both mineral oil and
water miscible cutting fluids. It can be applied for forming processes as well as for chip
®
removal operations. In mineral oil Hordaphos 145 increases lubricating and EP
properties. Hordaphos 145 is only slightly corrosive to iron and non-ferrous metals.
®

Hordaphos® 145 dissolves in naphthenic and paraffinic mineral oils to give a clear
solution. In spite of its good compatibility, the solubility with the particular mineral oil
and the additives used should be tested.
Hordaphos® 145 is not used as the free acid, but mainly as a salt. The lubricity of the
neutralised product depends to a certain extent on the amine used for this purpose.

The solubility of the salts depends on the amines used for neutralisation.

Page 1 of 7 HORDAPHOS® 145® 18.10.2013

Amines with a high polarity, e.g. triethanolamine, form salts which are not completely
soluble. Favourable are (alkyl subsituted) alkanolamines or fatty amine derivatives,
like mono ethanolamine (MEA), diethylethanolamine (DEEA), Genamin® O 020,
Genamin® 3920, Genamin® CH 020 and Hostarex® A 324.

In the graph results of Reichert tests for Hordaphos® 145 and selected amine salts are
given in comparison to a "middle chain chlorinated paraffin" (MCCP, C14-17,
Cl-content approx. 50 %). The results clearly indicate that Hordaphos® 145 is a
suitable replacement for MCCPs.

Tests on the four-ball-tester (DIN 51360) of 10 % Hordaphos® 145 solutions in Shell

Gravex 915 (naphthenic mineral oil) showed following results:

Welding load (1,420 U/min)

Hordaphos® 145, non neutralised 3,800 / 4,000 N
Hordaphos® 145, neutralised with
2,400 / 2,600 N
diethylaminoethanol (60 %/40 %)

Further results of lubrication tests are given in appendix 1.

After neutralisation Hordaphos® 145 can also be used in formulations for aqueous
cutting fluids. The fatty alcohol polyglycol ether groups together with the anionic head
group show excellent emulsifying capacity. By using a suitable amine, the corrosion
protection properties can be increased.

Using alkali – in particular KOH – for neutralisation increases the emulsifying

capacity but has adverse effects on corrosion protection, which is lowered. As shown
for mineral oil also in water the lubrication depends on the amine used for salt
formation:

For use in both neat oils and water miscible formulations combinations with esters,
e.g. TMP oleate are recommended. By this means lubrication properties and the
dispersity of the emulsion can be optimized with replacement of 10 to 20 % of the
mineral oil by TMP trioleate. Dependency of EP/AW-properties of the Hordaphos®
145/MEA salt on the mineral oil/ester-ratio is shown in appendix 2 for 3 and 5 %
emulsions.
In addition to the numerous lab tests, the properties of Hordaphos® 145 were also
checked under more practical machining tests. Also under these conditions
Hordaphos® 145 has proved to be an excellent EP/AW component.

SURFACE TENSION OF HORDAPHOS® / MEA-SALT

approx. 42-43 mN/m (1 g/l, 25 °C)

HYDROLYTIC STABILITY
Hordaphos® 145 has an excellent stability to hydrolysis: MEA, TEA and potassium
salts were stored for 54 weeks as 50 % solution in water at 40 °C. Hydrolysis was
monitored by determination of the acid number and conductivity.

Degree of hydrolysis after 4 weeks: 3- 7 % depending on salt

Degree of hydroylsis after 54 weeks. 7-13 % depending on salt

CORROSION PROTECTION
Results of chip filter tests for various Hordaphos® 145 salts are shown in the table
below.

SKIN AND EYE IRRITATION OF HORDAPHOS 145 SALTS

Hordaphos® 145 in various salt forms has been tested under GLP conditions at a 10 %
concentration level (pH: 8.1-9.1) according to OECD guide line 404 and OECD
guideline 405.
The result of the tests clearly indicate that these salts are not irritating to eye and
skin.
