Experiment No: 04

Name of the experiment: Voltage Regulator, Adjustable Output, Positive

Theory-

LM 317 is a 3–terminal positive voltage regulator. This IC includes a series pass transistor that
can handle up to 1.5A load current. An opamp with thermal shut down and current limiting are
also included. Its output automatically turns off, if its body temperature exceeds 175C. This is
called thermal shutdown. This provides protection against excessive power dissipation, which
depends on surrounding temperature and the amount of heat sinking.
The output voltage of this IC is adjustable from 1.25V to 37Vmax. Its output voltage can
be adjusted between this range by selecting proper values of R1 and R2 as follows –

Equipments:

IC LM 317, Center tapped transformer (12-0-12), Diodes (1N4001), Capacitor (10 µF), Resistor
(1 KΩ), Oscilloscope, DC Power Supply, AC Signal generator, Digital Multimeter, Trainer
Board

Procedure –
1. Connected power supply to breadboard.
2. Inserted voltage regulator.
3. Connected input and ground pins.
4. Connected output pin to positive rail.
5. Chose resistor value for desired output voltage.
6. Connected resistor between output and adjustment pins.
7. Powered on the supply.
8. Adjusted output voltage and measured.
9. Analyzed results.
