LESSON
EXTENDED DEFINITION
1

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. define an extended definition;
2. identify the techniques of extended definition; and
4
3. create a graphic organizer on techniques of extended definition.
General Directions: Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper in all the
activities/tasks of this module.

What’s New

Directions: Read the sentences below and answer the questions that follow.
Note: Term defined (in bold) Class to which the term belongs (in italic)
An algorithm is a finite description of a finite number of steps required to accomplish
some well-defined tasks.
Carbohydrates are a food group including sugars, starches, and cellulose.
Computer Memory is one of the three basic components of a computer which stores
information for future use-both the data that will be operated on as well as the programs that
direct the operations to be performed.
Reservoir rock is the type of rock that has sufficient porosity and permeability to allow
gas and oil to accumulate and be produced in commercial quantities.
Influenza is an acute highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract, which occurs
sporadically or in epidemic and that lasts up to a month.

Answer the following questions briefly:

1. Based on the first sentence, what is the definition of algorithm?
2. What class does carbohydrate belong?
3. What is the composition of a reservoir rock?

What It Is

What is an extended definition?

An extended definition consists of one or more paragraphs that attempt to

explain a complex term. Some terms may be so important in your report, there may be so
much confusion about them, or they may be so difficult to understand that an extended
discussion is vital for the success of your report.

Techniques of Extended Definition

Definition can begin with a synonym, a brief phrase, or a formal sentence that
explains the term/field in its most basic form. The techniques you use will depend on
what is appropriate for audience and subject matter. These techniques are listed below:

1. Etymology – explaining origin of the word itself

5
2. History – if relevant, discussing the history of the term/its use/controversies
associated with it
3. Cause and Effect – discussing how the situation came about and what effects it may
have
4. Description – listing and defining the component parts
5. Principles of Operation – discussing how the topic in question functions, including
any special materials or conditions required
6. Classification - showing how the topic fits into a larger category
7. Contrast/Negation – showing how the topic differs from others in the same class
8. Comparison – showing how the topic is like others in the class
9. Analogy – explaining by comparing two dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar
to the audience

Writing Formal Sentence Definitions

One of the first things to do when you write an extended definition is to

compose the formal sentence definition of the term you are writing about. It
establishes the focus for the rest of the discussion. It is "formal" because it uses a
certain form. Here are several examples:

Formal sentence definitions: their components are the term being defined, the class it belongs
to, and its distinguishing characteristics.

Note: Term defined (in bold) Class to which the term belongs (in italic)
An algorithm is a finite description of a finite number of steps required to
accomplish some well-defined tasks.
Carbohydrates are a food group including sugars, starches, and cellulose.
Computer Memory is one of the three basic components of a computer which stores
information for future use-both the data that will be operated on as well as the programs
that direct the operations to be performed.
Reservoir rock is the type of rock that has sufficient porosity and permeability to
allow gas and oil to accumulate and be produced in commercial quantities.
Influenza is an acute highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract, which
occurs sporadically or in epidemic and that lasts up to a month.

Take particular care when you write the reference to the class to which the term
belongs; it sets up a larger frame of reference or context. It gives readers something
familiar to associate the term with.

Similarly, provide plenty of specific details in the characteristic’s component

of the formal sentence definition. Readers need these details to begin forming their
own understanding of the term you are defining.

Be aware, however, that your formal sentence definition will likely contain
additional potentially unfamiliar terms. Somewhere in your extended definition,
you will need to explain them as well, possibly by using short definitions (explained
later in this section).

DAY 3

LESSON CHOOSING THE SOURCES OF

2 EXTENDED DEFINITIONS

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

1. identify the sources of extended definitions;
2. analyze the outline of a report that uses extended definitions; and
3. compose an extended definition of words.

What’s In

Directions: Fill out the blanks with the correct answer.

An ________________ consists of one or more paragraphs that attempt to explain a
complex term. Some terms may be so important in your ____________, there may be so
much confusion about them, or they may be so difficult to understand that an extended
discussion is vital for the _______________ of your report.

What It Is

Choosing the Sources of Definition

When you write an extended definition, you literally grab at any of the
writing resources or tools that will help you explain the term to your readers. This
means considering all the various sources of information that can help define the
term adequately (for example, description, process narration, causal discussion,
and classification). The key to writing a good extended definition is to choose the
sources of definition to help readers understand the term being defined.

Sources of Extended Definition

Description Does anything related to the term being defined

need to be described?

8
Process Narration Is there some process (natural/social) associated
with the term that should be discussed?

Additional Definitions Do unfamiliar terms occurring in the definition

also need definition?

Historical Background Is there some history, some key individuals

related to term being defined? Would that
discussion contribute to the definition of the
term?

Cause(s) Does the reader need to know about causes

related to the term being defined?

Effects/Results/Consequences Does the reader need to know about effects

related to the term being defined?

Problems/Solutions Does the term being defined represent a problem

or a solution?

Statistics Should you discuss numerical data related to the

term defined percentages, amounts and the like?

Uses/Applications Would it help to discuss uses or applications

related the term?

Classes/Types/Categories Are there categories that the term can be divided

into? Does it belong to a certain category?

Examples Would examples contribute to the definition of the

term?

Future Implications Would an understanding of the roots, the

etymology, of the word help define it?

Word Origins Should future developments related to the term

be discussed? Does it have implications-good, bad
or both?

Negatives Would explaining what the term is not, what it

does not refer to help?

Advantages/Disadvantages Are there advantages and disadvantages related

to the term that can be discussed?

of definition can be used to write an extended definition.

Another extended definition. This uses additional definitions, description (demographics),

process.
10
Adding Short Definitions

As mentioned earlier, you will find that in writing an extended definition, you must
define other terms as well. Typically, short definitions—a sentence, clause, or
phrase in length—will suffice.

Extended definitions often need additional definitions. These can be short, phrase-
length definitions.

Format for Extended Definition

11
What I can do

Directions: With the underlined words below, provide an extended definition to clearly
understand the thought of the paragraph. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper. For every extended definition, you will be given 2 points.

Measles is an acute, highly infectious disease, with cough, fever, and

corpuscular rash. It has worldwide endemic. The infective particle is an RNA Virus
about 100-150 nanometer in diameter, measured by ultra-filtration, but the active
core is only about 65 nm as measured by inactivation after electron irradiation.
Negative staining in the electron microscope shows the virus to have the helical
structure of a cytomegalovirus with the helix being 18 nm in diameter.

Measles virus will infect monkeys easily and chick embryos with difficulty. In
tissue cultures, the virus may produce giant multi mutated cells and nuclear
hydrophilic inclusion bodies. The virus has not been shown to have the receptor—
destroying enzyme associated with another cytomegalovirus. Measles, canine
distemper, and bovine rinderpest viruses are onto genetically related.

What I Have Learned

Directions: Answer the questions briefly.

1. What are the sources of extended definitions?

2. What is the format for an extended definition? How is it written?

3.What is the significance of learning extended definitions, especially in academic writing?

DAY 4

What’s More: Performance Task

Directions: Given the article below, compose an extended definition with the words
being highlighted. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. (10
points each).

Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered

corona virus.

Most people who are infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate
respiratory illnesses and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those
with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the
COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from
infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your
face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the
nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it is important that you also practice
respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
