Machine Preparation
1. Position the machine on level ground and stop the engine.

2. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"System Pressure Release".

3. Attach both 41,368 kPa (6,000 psi) pressure sensors to pressure tap (1) and pressure tap (2).

Test Procedure
Note: Machines that are equipped with heavy lift have a high-pressure setting and a low pressure
setting for the main relief valve.

1. Start the engine.

2. Place the hydraulic activation lever to the UNLOCK position.

3. Place the machine controls at the following settings: engine speed dial "7" and AEC switch
OFF. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Performance - Test (Engine Speed)" for engine
rpm settings.

4. Increase the hydraulic oil temperature to 55° ± 5°C (131° ± 9°F).

5. Set the heavy lift to the OFF position.

6. Move the joystick for the bucket until the bucket is at the full BUCKET CLOSE position (full
extension of bucket cylinder).

7. Check the pressure reading for the main relief valve pressure setting. Refer to Table 1.

8. Return the joystick for the bucket to the NEUTRAL position.

9. Set heavy lift to the ON position.

10. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

11. Check the pressure reading for the setting for heavy lift of the main relief valve. Refer to Table
1.

12. Return the joystick for the boom to the NEUTRAL position.

13. If the pressure reading for the main relief valve pressure setting does not meet specifications
listed within the Table 1 use the following adjustment procedure.

Temporary Main Relief Setting

Note: A temporary setting of the main relief valve is required before any line relief valves can be
adjusted. Refer to Table 3 for temporary main relief setting for the function being tested.

Main Control Valve with VA Boom

1. Mark the original position of the line relief valve for the stick cylinder rod end (5).

2. Loosen the locknut for line relief valve (5). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise by one quarter
turn. Tighten the locknut.

3. Start the engine.

4. Place the hydraulic activation control lever in the UNLOCKED position.

5. Place the machine controls at the following settings: engine speed dial "7" and AEC switch
OFF. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Performance - Test (Engine Speed)" for engine
rpm settings.

6. Increase the hydraulic oil temperature to 55° ± 5°C (131° ± 9°F).

7. Move the joystick for the stick until the stick is at the full STICK OUT position (full retraction
of stick cylinder).

8. Check the main relief valve pressure setting at pressure tap (1) or pressure tap (2). The main
relief pressure setting should be 35000 + 500 - 1000 kPa (5076 + 73 - 145 psi).

9. Loosen the locknut. Set the main relief pressure to 41000 ± 500 kPa (5947 ± 73 psi). Turn the
adjustment screw clockwise to increase the pressure. Turn the adjustment screw
counterclockwise to decrease the pressure. Tighten the locknut.

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on pressure rise.

1. To adjust relief valve (7), and (8) on the boom lowering control valves, the line relief valve (4)
on the main control valve must be temporarily adjusted.

a. Mark the original position of the line relief valve for the boom cylinder head end (4).

b. Loosen the locknut for line relief valve (4). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise by one
quarter turn. Tighten the locknut.

Note: To adjust relief valve (7) on the right boom lowering control valve, relief valve (8) on the
left boom lowering control valve must be temporarily adjusted.

2. Mark the location of the adjustment screw on relief valve (8).

3. Loosen the locknut on relief valve (8) on the left boom lowering control valve. Turn the
adjustment screw clockwise by one quarter turn. Tighten the locknut .

4. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

5. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the right boom lowering control valve (7).

6. Loosen the locknut of the line relief valve (7). Turn adjustment screw of the line relief valve
until the pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

7. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

8. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the right boom lowering control valve (7).

9. Turn the adjustment screw of the right boom lowering control valve (7) until the pressure
reading at pressure tap (1) is 40000 ± 500 kPa (5802 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: To prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the
pressure becomes within specification.

10. Tighten locknut on relief valve (7).

11. Loosen the locknut on relief valve (8) on the left boom lowering control valve. Turn the
adjustment screw counterclockwise by one half turn past the marked position. Tighten the
locknut.

Note: To adjust relief valve (8) on the left boom lowering control valve, relief valve (7) on the
right boom lowering control valve must be temporarily adjusted.

12. Mark the location of the adjustment screw on relief valve (7).

13. Turn the adjustment screw on relief valve (7) clockwise by one quarter turn. Tighten the
locknut.

14. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

15. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the left boom lowering control valve (8).

16. Loosen the locknut of the line relief valve (8). Turn adjustment screw of the line relief valve
until the pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

17. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

18. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the left boom lowering control valve (8).

19. Turn the adjustment screw of the left boom lowering control valve (8) until the pressure reading
at pressure tap (1) is 40000 ± 500 kPa (5802 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: To prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the
pressure becomes within specification.

20. Tighten the locknut on relief valve (8).

21. Loosen the locknut on relief valve (7) on the right boom lowering control valve. Turn the
adjustment screw counterclockwise by one quarter turn to the marked position. Tighten the
locknut.

22. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

23. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the boom cylinder head end (4).

24. Loosen the locknut of the boom line relief valve. Turn adjustment screw of the boom line relief
valve (4) until the pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

25. Move the joystick for the boom until the boom is at the full BOOM RAISE position (full
extension of boom cylinders).

26. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the boom cylinder head end (4).

27. Turn the adjustment screw of the boom line relief valve (4) until the pressure reading at
pressure tap (1) is 41000 ± 500 kPa (5947 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: To prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the
pressure becomes within specification.

28. Reset main relief valve pressure setting to the normal operating condition after the completion
of the line relief test and adjust. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Main) - Test
and Adjust".

Adjustment (Stick Lowering Control Valve)

(9) Relief valve (stick cylinder lowering valve)

1. To adjust relief valve (9) on the stick lowering control valves, the line relief valve (5) on the
main control valve must be temporarily adjusted.

Note: A temporary adjustment of line relief valve for the stick cylinder rod end (5) may have
been completed within the procedure to set the temporary main relief setting, "Temporary Main
Relief Setting". If the adjustment has already been made to the line relief (5), proceed to Step 2.

a. Mark the original position of the line relief valve for the stick cylinder rod end (5).

b. Loosen the locknut for line relief valve (5). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise by one
quarter turn. Tighten the locknut.

2. Mark the location of the adjustment screw on relief valve (9).

3. To adjust the relief valve pressure setting of the stick cylinder lowering valve (9), move the
joystick for the stick until the stick is at the full STICK OUT position (full retraction of stick
cylinder).

4. Check the pressure in the stick cylinder rod end at pressure tap (1).

5. Loosen the locknut of the relief valve (9). Turn adjustment screw of the relief valve until the
pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

6. Move the joystick for the stick until the stick is at the full Stick OUT position (full retraction of
stick cylinder).

7. Check the pressure in the stick cylinder rod end at pressure tap (1).

8. Turn the adjustment screw of the relief valve (9) until the pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is
40000 ± 500 kPa (5802 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: To prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the
pressure becomes within specification.

9. Tighten the locknut on the stick lowering control valve (9).

10. Move the joystick for the stick until the stick is at the full STICK OUT position (full retraction
of stick cylinder).

11. Check the pressure setting of the line relief for the stick cylinder rod end (5).

12. Loosen the locknut for the stick line relief valve (5). Turn adjustment screw of the stick line
relief valve counterclockwise until the pressure reading at pressure tap (1) is 37000 kPa
(5366 psi).

13. Move the joystick for the stick until the stick is at the full STICK OUT position (full retraction
of stick cylinder).

14. Check the pressure setting of the line relief for the stick cylinder rod end (5).

15. Turn the adjustment screw of the stick line relief valve until the pressure reading at pressure tap
(1) is 41000 ± 500 kPa (5947 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: To prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately after the
pressure becomes within specification.

16. Reset main relief valve pressure setting to the normal operating condition after the completion
of the line relief test and adjust. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Main) - Test
and Adjust".

Adjustment (VA Boom Lowering Control Valve) (If Equipped)

Note: A continuous relief of the valve for more than 10 seconds is not allowed.

VA Boom Lowering Control Valve
(10) VA Boom Lowering Control Valve

1. To adjust relief valve (10) on the VA boom lowering control valves, the line relief valve (6) on
the main control valve must be temporarily adjusted.

a. Mark the original position of the line relief valve for the VA boom cylinder rod end line
relief (6).

b. Loosen the locknut for line relief valve (6). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise by one
quarter turn. Tighten the locknut.

2. Start the engine.

3. To adjust the relief valve pressure setting of the VA boom cylinder lowering valve (10), move
the joystick for the VA Boom until the VA boom is at the full VA BOOM UP position (full
retraction of VA boom cylinder).

4. Check the pressure in the VA boom cylinder rod end at pressure tap (2).

5. Loosen the locknut of the relief valve (10). Turn the adjustment screw of the relief valve until
the pressure reading at pressure tap (2) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

6. Move the joystick for the VA boom until the VA boom is at the full VA BOOM UP position
(full retraction of VA boom cylinder).

7. Check the pressure in the VA boom cylinder rod end at pressure tap (2).

8. Turn the adjustment screw of the relief valve (10) until the pressure reading at pressure tap (2)
is 40000 ± 500 kPa (5802 ± 73 psi).

9. Tighten the locknut on the VA boom lowering control relief valve (10).

10. Move the foot pedal for the VA boom until the VA boom is at the full VA BOOM up position
(full retraction of the VA boom cylinder).

11. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the VA boom cylinder rod end (6).

12. Loosen the locknut of the VA boom line relief valve (6). Turn the adjustment screw of the
boom line relief valve until the pressure reading at pressure tap (2) is 37000 kPa (5366 psi).

13. Move the foot pedal for the VA boom until the VA boom is at the full VA BOOM UP position
(full retraction of VA boom cylinder).

14. Check the pressure setting of the line relief valve for the VA boom cylinder rod end line relief
(6).

15. Turn the adjustment screw of the boom line relief valve (6) until the pressure reading at
pressure tap (2) is 41000 ± 500 kPa (5947 ± 73 psi).

Note: Always make final pressure adjustments on the pressure rise.

Note: In order to prevent over setting, the adjustment should be stopped immediately
after the pressure becomes within specification.

16. Reset main relief valve pressure setting to the normal operating condition after the completion
of the line relief test and adjust. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Main) - Test
and Adjust".
