Relief Valve - Test and Adjust

SMCS - 5453-036

Always replace the floorplate when performing tests.

Perform tests with oil temperature below 66 deg c (150 deg f) to prevent
serious burns.

Do not hold pressure gauges in your hand or lap when checking

pressure readings.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will

reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components.

To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always

plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover
any disassembled components and clean them properly before
assembly.

Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component

exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any
contamination.

There are two relief valves in the hydraulic system.

Both relief valves are part of the blade control valve.

One of the relief valves is the blade tilt relief valve (tilt section).

The main relief valve is for the bulldozer and ripper lift functions. This relief valve also controls
the pressure for the ripper tip function (lift section).

Testing the Relief Valve for the Blade Tilt and for the Blade
Pitch
1. Remove the floorplate from the machine.

Illustration 2 g01131588

2. Attach tooling (A) to pressure tap (1) .

3. Disconnect the rod end hydraulic lines from each tilt cylinder.

4. Install a blocking plate assembly in each of the hydraulic lines for the tilt cylinders.

5. Reconnect the rod end hydraulic lines to each tilt cylinder.

6. Start the engine.

7. Run the engine at high idle (2000 rpm).

8. Move the blade control lever to the left.

9. The high reading on the gauge is the pressure setting of the tilt relief valve.

NOTICE

Do not hold the control lever in either the TILT LEFT or the TILT
RIGHT position at relief valve pressure for more than three seconds.

10. The pressure setting of the tilt relief valve is 20340 ± 690 kPa (2950 ± 100 psi).

Adjusting the Relief Valve for the Blade Tilt and for the
Blade Pitch
1. Setting the relief valve

Note: Use the adjustment screw to adjust the pressure setting on the tilt relief valve.

a. Stop the engine.

b. Turn the key to ON position.

c. Slowly move the bulldozer control lever toward the FLOAT position in order to allow
the bulldozer to slowly lower to the ground.

d. Move the control lever for the bulldozer to each operating position several times in
order to remove the pressure from the hydraulic lines.

e. Turn the key to OFF position.

control valve.

3. Remove the test equipment from pressure tap (1) .

4. Install the floorplate.

Testing the Relief Valve for the Blade Lift and for the Ripper
The relief valve for the blade tilt and the blade pitch is intentionally set at 1550 kPa (225 psi)
above the main relief valve in order to avoid the interaction of the two relief valves.

Note: The relief valve should be set for the blade tilt and the blade pitch correctly before the main
relief valve is set.

Testing Procedure

1. If the machine is equipped with a ripper, proceed to Step 5.

2. Disconnect the rod end hydraulic lines from each lift cylinder.

3. Install a blocking plate assembly in each of the hydraulic lines for the lift cylinders.

4. Reconnect the rod end hydraulic lines to each lift cylinder.

5. Remove the floorplate from the machine.

6. Attach tooling (A) to pressure tap (2) .

7. Install the floorplate.

8. Start the engine and run the engine in the HIGH IDLE (2000 rpm).

9. Observe the test gauge and slowly move the control lever to the RAISE position. Use either
the control lever for the blade or the control lever for the ripper if the machine has a ripper.

10. The high reading on the gauge is the pressure setting of the main relief valve.

NOTICE

Do not hold the dozer control lever in the RAISE position at relief
valve pressure for more than five seconds.
