1. The following data pertain to the two-row velocity compounded impulse turbine.
Steam nozzle velocity 650 m/s
Mean blade speed 125 m/s
Nozzle angle 16o
Steam flow rate 2.5 kg/s
Outlet blade angle of moving blades -first row 18o
Outlet guide angle – fixed row 22o
Outlet blade angle of moving blades -second row 36o
“K” value for relative velocity in both rows 0.84
Calculate:
a) The axial thrust on the blades,
b) The power developed, and
c) The blade efficiency
[142.5 N; 391.4 kW; 74.14%]

2. The first stage of an impulse turbine is compounded for velocity and has two rings of moving
blades and one ring of fixed blades. The nozzle angle is 20°, and the leaving angles of the blades
are respectively as follows: First moving 20°, fixed 25° and second moving 30°. The steam leaving
the nozzles is 600 m/s, and the steam velocity relative to the blade and at the ring exit is reduced
by 10% during the passage through each ring. Blade speed may be 125 m/s, and. Find:
a) The diagram efficiency, and
b) The power developed for a steam flow of 4 kg per second.
c) The tangential thrust.
d) The axial thrust
[78.4 %; 564.44 kW; 4.52 kN; 382.64 N]

3. The following particulars refer to a two-row velocity-compounded impulse wheel:

Steam velocity at nozzle exit = 600 m/s
Nozzle angle = 16°
Mean blade velocity = 120 m/s
Exit angles: first row moving blades = 18°, fixed guide blades = 22°, second row
moving blades = 36°
Steam flow = 5 kg/s
Blade friction coefficient for all blades = 0.85
Determine:
a) The tangential thrust,
b) The axial thrust,
c) The power developed, and
d) The diagram efficiency.

4. The following particulars apply to a two-row velocity compounded impulse stage of a turbine:
nozzle angle 17°, mean blade speed 125 m/s; exit angles of the first row moving blades, the fixed
blades, and the second row moving blades 22°, 26° and 30°, respectively; blade friction factor for
each row 0.9. Assume that the absolute velocity of steam leaving the stage is in the axial
direction. Draw the velocity diagrams for the stage and find:
a) The absolute velocity of steam leaving the stage,
a) The diagram work per kg of steam, and
b) The diagram efficiency.
[72.17 m/s; 128.63 kJ/kg; 79.9%]

5. The first stage of an impulse turbine is compounded for velocity and has two rows of moving
blades and one ring of fixed blades. The nozzle angle is 15°, and the leaving angles of the blades
are, respectively, first-moving 30°, fixed 20°, and second-moving 30°. The velocity of steam
leaving the nozzle is 540 m/s. The friction loss in each blade row is 10%. Steam leaves the second
row of moving blades axially.
