Students work in groups of THREE or FOUR to solve the situations below:

Situation1:

Just before Doug went home from his job as a cook on Friday night, the restaurant manager
informed him that she would be taking the next two weeks off and that she was appointing
Doug to take her place starting Monday. Although Doug has more seniority than the other
employees and is an excellent cook, he doesn’t feel confident in being able to handle a
manager’s job. Doug doesn’t feel comfortable dealing with the customers, using the cash
register, or handling conflicts that may arise between employees. He feels that he will fail at
being able to fill her shoes. What should Doug do? Why?

Situation 2:

Tom is responsible for giving a bonus to factory workers that have perfect attendance during
the month. One worker missed one day due to a death in the family. The worker starts crying in
Tom’s office and tells Tom that she needs the bonus desperately since she is behind on her rent.
The rules are clear and the bonus is for perfect attendance period no if, buts, or maybes.
However, Tom does have the authority to make exceptions to the rule. What should Tom do?
Should the exceptions be made sometimes?

Situation 3:

You are in a PBL project in school with two other girls. They are in the same class and friends
for a long time. You know them casually but you aren’t in the same class and you’re not good
friends. You have an assignment to do in your group. You have been asking the other girls since
the teacher assigned it when they want to meet and they keep telling you “soon” or “let’s figure
it out later” but it never happens.
Now the project is due tomorrow. They’re not answering you. What do you do?
Discuss how to have an efficient group work.

Situation 4:
You are a first-year student college. Three weeks into the semester yoru family informs you that
they have decided to take a trip to Europe and would like you to attend. They said that you can
ask your friends about the lesson and self-study at home. Unfrotunately, you do not have the
time off from school, and by missing a whole week of classes, your grades will be at risk. What
should you do? Should students’attendance in class be graded?

Situation 5:

Nick’s parents open up a bank account for him before he went off to college. They agreed to
place increment of X amount of dollars each month into the account for Nick to purchase food,
clothes and school supplies. However, Nick seems to pester his parents earlier and earlier in the
month for more money. What should Nick’s parents do?

Situation 6:

Before starting a short essay, each student is asked to create a username and password on their
laptops on the first day of English class. Anna sets up her information correctly and starts her
essay. She logs out at the end of the class period. The next day, when she logs on she sees a
document in her file that doesn’t belong to her. It is an unkind essay written about her English
teacher. The teacher is walking around checking the essays. What should Anna do?
