CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION

Mental health awareness among students is an increasingly important issue as students face high
levels of stress, academic pressure, and social expectations. Mental health issues as anxiety,
depression, and stress can have a negative impact on students’ academic performance, personal
relationships and overall well-being. It is an essential to promote mental health awareness among
students to help them understand and manage their mental health, seek help when needed, and
support their peers who may be struggling.

Mental health awareness campaigns and programs can help students develop a better
understanding of mental health issues, identify warning signs, and learn how to seek help. These
programs can also help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, which often prevents
students from seeking help or sharing their struggles with others. By promoting mental health
awareness, students can create a more supportive and compassionate school environment that
prioritizes mental health and well-being.

However, promoting mental health awareness is not enough if there are no resources and
services available to support students with mental health issues. Schools must also provide
mental health services and resources to ensure that students receive the help they need. With the
rising need for mental health support among students, it is crucial for schools to prioritize mental
health awareness and invest in mental health resources and services to ensure that students can
thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose is to determine the significance of mental health awareness among selected
students. Specifically, the researchers aimed to find the answer to the following question:
1. What is the significance of mental health awareness among students?
2. What is the impact of mental health awareness campaigns on students’ knowledge, attitudes,
and behaviors towards mental health?
3. What solutions or interventions can we use to improve mental health awareness among
students?

HYPOTHESIS/ ASSUMPTION

decrease in mental health stigma, an increase in help-seeking behaviors, and improved academic
outcomes.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN LITERATURE
Livingston et al., (2013) evaluated the effectiveness of the In One Voice campaign for
raising mental health awareness and improving attitudes of youth and young adults towards
mental health issues and found that those who were exposed to the campaign were significantly
more likely to talk about and seek information relating to mental health.

With all of the work done to assess the effectiveness of mental health awareness
campaigns, the most widely used intervention types tested as promising practices were education
or information, and variants of social contact between people with and without mental illness
(Corrigan et al., 2012)

LOCAL LITERATURE
Through the Philippines has consistently ranked in the Top 5 of a global optimism index,
the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) has revealed a significant increase in monthly
hotline calls regarding depression, with numbers rising from 80 calls pre-lockdown to nearly
400.

In a survey of 359 Filipino college students in the Philippines, only 22% in their
lifetime sought professional help for an academic or non-academic issue, and

there was a significantly higher preference to seek help from friends and family members than
from professional councelors and psychotherapist (Bello, Pinson, & Tuliao, 2013; Bunagan,
Tuliao, & Velasquez, 2011).

RELATED STUDIES

FOREIGN STUDIES
According to the World Health Organization, in low and middle income countries, 75%-
85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment. There is also a growing concern that
treatment provided of a poor quality. As such, SAGE are proud to provide cutting edge research
including recently published articles, special issues, videos and much more, to drive, educate and
support Mental Health Awareness to help improve the quality of care provided.

LOCAL STUDIES
Most of what we know about Filipino mental health help-seeking behavior is still
limited, and mostly extrapolations from the literature on Filipino Americans (e.g., AbeKim,
Gong, & Takeuchi, 2004; Gong, Gage, & Tacata, 2003), or Filipino Americans studied alongside
other Asian Americans (e.g., Li & Browne, 2000; Sorkin, Nguyen, & Ngo-Metzger, 2011).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter primarily deals with the discussion on data gathering procedure with the
population, summary of distribution and description of respondents involved in the research
locale, sources of data and interpretations of data gathered.

RESEARCH DESIGN
This Descriptive and Quantitative Research used a survey questionnaire to gather
information. The questions will be presented in the English language and were distributed to the
respondents. The researcher also used likert scale to present the data.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researcher used survey questionnaire to gather information of data. This will be
distributed to 30 selected students of Quezon-Roxas High School of Marinduque Foundation
Incorporated.

DISTRIBUTION AND DESCRIPTIONS OF RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the study are the selected students of Quezon-Roxas High School of
Marinduque Foundation Incorporated. The survey questionnaires will be distributed to 30
selected students.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT
The data that gathered were classified and tabulated in frequency distribution and ranks
accordingly. For reliable interpretation, data were classified and tabulated, the researcher utilized
the following statistical treatment;
Percentage
In getting percentage, the total frequency was divided by the number of respondents, then
it is multiplied by 100 to convert into percent.
FORMULA: P=f/n x 100
Where: p= percentage
f= frequency
n= number of respondents

Weighted Arithmetic Mean

To find the weighted arithmetic mean, the sum of all the product of frequency (f) and the
weighted b (x) of each option was divided by the (f) sum of all the respondents.
FORMULA: x= fx/n

RECOMMENDATIONS
These recommendations could be made to promote mental health awareness:
1. Increase Education: Education about mental health should be part of the school curriculum
and workplaces, and accessible to everyone. This will help to reduce the stigma around mental
health and encourage people to seek help when needed..
2. Encourage Conversation: Conversations around mental health should be encouraged in
families, workplaces, and communities. Encouraging people to talk about their experiences can
help reduce the stigma and make it easier for people to seek help.
3. Promote Access to Resources: Promoting access to mental health resources, such as
counseling services and support groups, is essential. Providing information about resources and
services can help people find the help they need when they need it.
4. Encourage Self-Care: Encouraging self-care is important for mental health awareness. This
can include things like getting enough sleep, exercise, and eating well. Encouraging self-care can
help people to manage their mental health and prevent mental health problems from developing.
5. Advocate for Policy Change: Advocating for policy change at the local and national level can
help to promote mental health awareness. This can include things like increasing funding for
mental health services and programs, and improving access to mental health care for underserved
populations.
