Task 5
1. How do you define “intension” and “extension” and give an example of each?
2. What are the philosophical theories of meaning?
3. What are the alternative theories of meaning?

Answer

1. Intension and Extension, in logic, correlative words that indicate the reference of
a term or concept:
• The meaning of a term is reffered to as its intension. For example, there are
two intensions of the concept chair-an object upon which we sit. And a person
who heads a meeting or organization.
• Extension indicates its range of applicability by naming the particular objects that it
denotes. An example of an extension is adding a second story to a single story house.
An example of an extension is line two on a business line.

2. The philosophical theories of meaning is that the meaning of a term is the object to
which that term refers in the real world. Any philosophical theory of meaning must
ultimetaly account for how word meanings are interconnected within a larger a
semantic and linguistic theory.

3. The alternative theories of meaning is that both reference and idetional theories of
meaning have been criticized for treating all meaningfuls terms and expressions as
names. What of other words besides those that refer to properties or nouns, such as
words that have meaning because of their role or function within language. Perhaps,
the meaning of names and properties derives from their participation in language.
