Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 2:
Finding the Nth Term of a
Sequence and Differentiating
Expression from Equation
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in
each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher's assistance for better
understanding the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the
post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in
answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.
Thank you.

i
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master formulating the rule in finding the nth term using different
strategies and differentiating expression from equation. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Formulating the Rule in Finding the Nth Term Using
Different Strategies
• Lesson 2 – Differentiating Expression from Equation

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. formulate the rule in finding the nth term using different strategies
(M6AL-IIId-7)
2. differentiate expression from equation
(M6AL-IIId-15)

Lesson Formulating the Rule in

1 Finding the Nth Term Using

Different Strategies

Numbers are not only used for counting or measuring. They are also
used to identify order and sequences. One good example is the use of numbers
for identifying location and one’s address. Most addresses follow a certain
process or sequence. There is a good reason why most streets are named as
1st street, 2nd street, 3rd street, and so on.

What’s New

The four basic operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and

Division) are commonly used in a sequence of numbers. In the Fibonacci
numbers (a set of numbers that starts with one or a zero, followed by one),
you start with the first two numbers. The succeeding numbers are the sum of
the previous two. Therefore, following the pattern, the next three terms in the
sequence are 13,21, and 34. Try to find the next three terms.

3
What is It

Numbers, figures, objects, or symbols arranged in a definite order or sequence

is often encountered in Mathematics. For instance,

(a) 2, 4, 6, … (b) (c) A, D, G, J, …

Numbers in (a), figures in (b), and letters in (c) are arranged in a definite order.
Using the given sequences:

1. What is the next number in (a)?

2. What is the next figure in (b)?
3. What is the next letter in (c)?

The Nth Term of a Sequence

A sequence is a set of numbers written in a special order by the

application of a definite rule. Each number in the sequence is called a term.
Patterns and rules will help us to continue a given sequence of numbers,
figures, or to fill in the missing numbers or symbols.

What’s New

Expression is a Mathematical phrase that uses variables, numerals, and

operation symbols.

Expression: the sum of a number and ten divided by two.

c+10
c - as a number (c + 10) ÷ 2 or
2

Equation is a Mathematical sentence with an equal sign (=) which shows that
two expressions on either side are equal.

Equation: the sum of a number and ten divided by two equals seven.

c - as a number
c+10 4+10
c=4 (c + 10) ÷ 2 =7
2 2
(4 + 10) ÷ 2 = 7

What is It

An expression has no equal sign, there is no definite answer and

cannot end up displaying the value of the variables involved.
Here are examples of expressions.
Word Phrases Symbols

• three times ten divided by five (3 x 10) ÷ 5

• seven added to the product of (4 x 6) + 7
four and six.
• the sum of nine and twenty-one (9 + 21) – 14
diminished by fourteen.
• five times seventeen less twenty. (5 x 17) – 20
• ninety-three decreased by forty- 93 – 42
two

11
Direction: Answer the following questions on a sheet of paper.
1. What are the Mathematical terms used in the phrases?
2. What terms denote addition? subtraction? multiplication? division?

An equation contains equal sign. It shows answer or ends up

representing the value of the variable.

The following are examples of equations.

8 + 7 = 15 or the sum of a number and seven is fifteen

(9 x 2) – 10 = 8 or twice a number decreased by ten is equal to

eight

(b-16) +12 = 55 or twelve is added to the difference of a number

and sixteen the sum is fifty-five

2 (c+2) = 18 or twice the sum of a number and two is eighteen

What’s More

Direction: The following are examples of expressions and equations. Place

them under proper column inside the box below. Do this on a sheet of paper.

29 - 12 =17 (3 x 13) - 21

5(a + 9) 36 - (6 x 4)

3(c + 5) = 27 c - 15 = 44
