Winston Churchill Prime minister, historian, war correspondent 1874-

1965

Britain could not have beaten Adolf Hitler without Winston Churchill in Number 10 Downing
Street, and yet he could not have been prime minister without Hitler. Only in the midst of the
worst national crisis since 1066 did his peers overcome their distrust of the man. His command
of the English language (he wrote his own history of the English-speaking peoples as well as his
own speeches) intimidated many

Known and adored throughout the civilized world as a great communicator perhaps no man's
rhetoric style and written word has been studied, with the intention of being emulated, more then
Winston Churchill. He is a statesman in the highest degree and is respected worldwide for his
ability to capture the hearts and minds of not only his audience but those who would read his
speeches later.

He is famous for his public aura and dominates the definition of what it means to be
remembered. With a cigar never to far away from his mouth, an easy smile, and the quick
showing of his two fingers to make a "V" for victory, Churchill was a man's man.

Many may not know that Churchill spoke with a lisp and many argue that at one time in his life
he stuttered. This later belief is denied by the Churchill Centre.

Perhaps his shortest speech was given in which he got up to the stand said... "Never, never, never
give up!" and sat back down in his seat.

Speaking Tips

o Sometimes it is best to get straight to the point. No need to butter anyone or

anything up. People have come to hear you speak and they want to know what
you ahem to say. Do not waste their time. You will lose their captivation.
o Don't use flowery words when they are not needed
o Don't start out your speech by thanking your host, you lose your audience when
you start like this. Do it at some point in the middle of the speaking engagement.
