Air pollution is a release into the atmosphere of any substances, for
example chemicals or airborne particles, which are harmful both to the
human and animal health as well as the health of the wider environment.
Atmospheric pollution occurs because the release of air pollutants takes
place at a rate much faster than they can be accommodated by the
environment and removed from the atmosphere without causing serious
harm.
Pollution had been known to exist for centuries, but it became an issue of
serious concern only in the last 200 years or so, mostly due to the industrial
revolution.
Atmospheric pollution originates from all the parts of the world and travels
around knowing no borders.

Air pollution' is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter,
or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other
living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment or built
environment, into the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is
essential to support life on planet Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletion due
to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human health as
well as to the Earth's ecosystems.
ndoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of the world worst
pollution problems in the 2008 Blacksmith nstitute World's Worst Polluted
Places report.

The air pollution happens because of humans' bad habits such as;

Releasing sulphur dioxide into the
air.
Using substances that are not free
of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC).

Releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO
2
).

We make choices every day that can help reduce air pollution. Below are a
few ideas that we can take to help clean our air.
At Home
O Conserve energy - turn off appliances and lights when you leave the
room.
O Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans.
(This conserves energy and reduces production emissions.)
O Keep woodstoves and fireplaces well maintained. You should also
consider replacing old wood stoves with EPA-certified models.
O Plant deciduous trees in locations around your home to provide shade
in the summer, but to allow light in the winter.
O Buy green electricity-produced by low-or even zero-pollution facilities.
O Connect your outdoor lights to a timer or use solar lighting.
O Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot.
O Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120F.
O Use low-VOC or water-based paints, stains, finishes, and paint
strippers.
O Test your home for radon-a dangerous, radioactive gas that is
odorless and tasteless. f the test shows elevated levels of radon, the
problem can be fixed cost effectively.
O Choose not to smoke in your home, especially if you have children. f
you or your visitors must smoke, then smoke outside.
: Smart
O Buy ENERGY STAR products, including energy efficient lighting and
appliances. They are environmentally friendly products.
O Choose efficient, low-polluting models of vehicles.
O Choose products that have less packaging and are reusable.
